"We all know the real reason rock critics wet their pants over Living Colour, so I won't dwell on the issue, except to say that if I was in Mordred or Riot (or, uh, Rush), who do more or less the same pompous sound bite-sludge schtick and suck almost as bad at it, I'd be strongly considering blackface" - Chuck Eddy, SPIN (1991)

"TV on the Radio have to be the most hookless, sexless, grooveless, tuneless, singerless, songless piece of shit emperor's new clothes to hit new york since i got this job." - Chuck Eddy, ILX (2004)

love rears its ugly head was pretty good. early tvtor was good too. theyve just become a bit too worthy (and more dull-rocking) ever since.

cutty, Sunday, 14 December 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

Black people remind him of Filipinos, Sami, Roma gypsies and Asleep At The Wheel

TVOTR are okay, but I voted for Geddy in blackface.

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Friday, 19 December 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

Not Living Color, mind, who were atrocious, but actual Geddy in blackface.

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Friday, 19 December 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

xp

And Love. (And probably others I'm not thinking of right now.)

Also think I slightly underrated both bands in the quotes above. Living Colour = more distinctive sound than I give them credit for (good slumming jazz guitarist, shitty singer, etc.); TV on the Radio definitely not the worst over-hyped New York band of the last decade (the Walkmen come to mind, for one.) Still have no use for them, though.

xhuxk, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

I voted TVOTR because of Living Color's clothes.

on the corey glove?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

My mom somehow convinced me of two false things about Living Colour when I was a kid:

1) That they were British (probably thought so because of the spelling)
2) That Corey Glover was the son of actor Danny Glover (don't know where she got this)

ichard Thompson (Hurting 2), Friday, 19 December 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)

I saw Living Colour open for the Who in '89. AWFUL.

I drank at a bar in Williamsburg with the singer of TVOTR. WHATEVER.

I can't even vote on this shit but if Geddy in black face was a real option, I would take it.

Nate Carson, Friday, 19 December 2008 04:35 (seventeen years ago)

I saw Living Colour in '91. AWESOME.

kind of agree with chuck about the walkmen though :/

I had no clue xhuxk hated Rush.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 20 December 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

I do agree: kinda overrated, but "hookless, sexless, grooveless, tuneless, singerless, songless" is wrong. I actually think the singer (the main guy, not the fro guy) has a really great voice, and that new album is groovy. And they've made a couple songs about sex, though I guess they're not too sexy. Well, I guess you can keep the other three adjectives if you want.

skygreenleopard, Saturday, 20 December 2008 08:16 (seventeen years ago)

xp Didn't hate Rush; just wasn't fond of their early '90s music. (Didn't hate Riot, Mordred or Living Colour, either; just thought they were all comparably...mediocre. Though in a passingly interesting way sometimes.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 20 December 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

(Actually, I mean early '90s Riot there, too, when they used samples and turntables to keep up with the times. Their early stuff was great.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 20 December 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

my cousin was in mordred

ice cr?m, Saturday, 20 December 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

If Geddy Lee in blackface at a bar in Williamsburg was an option. WHATEVER.

"I Like My Hogen-Mogen" (nickalicious), Saturday, 20 December 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

If Living Colour's best album (STAIN) in blackface was an option, I'd still have voted for Fishbone.

"I Like My Hogen-Mogen" (nickalicious), Saturday, 20 December 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

Fishbone's worst album (Familyhood Nextperience or whatever, the one with all the celeb cameos) is better than any album either of these bands ever made.

"I Like My Hogen-Mogen" (nickalicious), Saturday, 20 December 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

what the hell does Fishbone have to do with either of these bands

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Saturday, 20 December 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

Duh Dan they are black.

"I Like My Hogen-Mogen" (nickalicious), Saturday, 20 December 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

Alfred up there said he voted for them.

"I Like My Hogen-Mogen" (nickalicious), Saturday, 20 December 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

I hope Geddy Lee is lurking and makes a terribly ill-advised career move.
