Search and Destroy: Kill Rock Stars

So, which bands have stood the test of time, and which have rightly been swept aside? Are the Bangs the future, or already just a glimpse of the glories of the past? Were Heavens To Betsy really all that? Godheadsilo? Bratmobile? Mary Lou Lord? You tell me.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 20 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

godzuki are allegedly going to release something on kill rock stars before i die so i may in fact buy a kill rock stars record. oh wait i have that lung leg record, so i should shut up.

keith, Friday, 20 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

search -- bikini kill-pussywhipped and heavens to betsy-calculated: primitive and passionate enough to support an arguement that punk rock may have survived at least until the early nineties. the kleenex/liliput comp: a solid reminder of how punk pock should have been. sleater-kinney-dig me out: evidence that although punk might be dead maybe rock isn't. elliott smith-either/or: i don't know how to explain this one. deep down i know it's crap, but somehow it still gets to me every time. i'm an incurable indie dork.

destroy -- pretty much everything else, especially all of the "wordcore" torture and second rate riot grrl. comet gain will be preserved, but only with the hope that krs will see it fit to release casino classics is the u.s. there are a few other things i might possibly spare given my mood and the time of day including: bratmobile, the julie ruin record, mocket, two or three godheadsilo songs and maybe even the peechees. and i guess we can keep unwound around too, although someone even more indie than me will have to defend them.

so i guess i've managed to preserve almost the entire catalog although that's certainly not what i set out to do. really, there's very little that is vital on krs, but there are quite a few things that aren't horrible.

ryan schofield, Friday, 20 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

KRS has aged as well as Riot Grrl, which is to say, not very well -- as a 'movement' at least.

Search: All the bigtime Riot Grrl stuff: Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, et al. Plus the K.H. cover of I Wish I was Him, everything touched by Corin Tucker.

Destroy: Yow... what was the band with 7 guitars and two drummers and no bass?

JM, Saturday, 21 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

search - unwound...the new new sonic youth

Geoff, Saturday, 21 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

search: bikini kill 'pussy whipped' and 'new radio' and 'carnival,' bratmobile 'pottymouth' and 'girl germs,' pretty much all of 'stars kill rock' (especially 'only straight girls wear dresses,' holy CRAP that song was a revelation to me -- picture a repressed 17 year old in her room, a room that is open to her parents' supervision because of a temporary house layout, and listening to that song and diving under the covers), huggy bear 'herjazz,' courtney love's cover of 'don't mix the colors' from the first kill rock stars comp mary lou lord 'some jingle jangle morning' (the 7" version) and 'helsinki,' the cupid car club ep, heavens to betsy 'stay away.'

destroy: most of the wordcore stuff, that HORRIBLE AWFUL ICK second huggy bear full-length, free kitten, star pimp 'seraphim 280z.' also i just think sleater-kinney are not really all that, but they probably aren't worthy of, you know, DESTRUCTION.

ps: that band you are referring to, jimmy the mod, is kreviss.

I'm afraid that, once again, I don't understand the question.

the pinefox, Saturday, 21 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seconding Geoff -- Unwound, folks. It's a grand thing. As is Long Hind Legs, the semi-side project. But Unwound in particular are just freakin' monsters, and *so* much of what else is on the K/KRS roster seems pretty bland in comparison.

krs puts out some amazing bands and those a bit lacking.....but as a whole the record lable is still strong and producing great artists and cds.

seach: bikini kill, heavens to betsy, team dresch *though they are tech on candyass/chainsaw, krs released some of their early stuff*, excuse 17, and sleater-kinney

destroy: star-presta, the gossip, and most wordcore

azalea, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and as for 'only straight girls wear dresses' by cwa on stars kill rock, go them! the shock value of that song alone is worth getting the cd for. for those who dont know what im talking about......its about two girls dyking it out in a bathroom....very graphic.

JM - that band with 7 guitars was KREVISS! I used to know them personally - when I worked in a music shop, one of the guitarists came in and asked me for "Teach Yourself Guitar" book as they had a gig THAT NIGHT. And that was the "musical one" of the group!

tarden, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Radical! There should always be a place for stuff like that. Which is pretty much how I feel about KRS: I'm glad they exist, even if I don't have the patience for most of it. I'm thrilled about that Liliput reissue, though.

I remember Kreviss, and I thought that the idea was inspiring, at least.

One of the Kreviss chicks is now in a sweet twee pop group called Vancouver Nights. I have the CD and it's surprisingly good. Not on KRS, tho.

"Call the Doctor" - sleater-kinney is fuckin great.

di, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also lurve heavens to betsy and bratmobile

di, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: as mentioned countless times above, Bikini Kill pussywhipped. possibly the greatest album of all time. reject all american = greatest driving album of all time. unwound also very good although i am not an expert. is the new album good? sleater kinney = great, (a bit patchy as of late), but carrie > mick jagger. opening chords to start together @ rock for choice in vancouver several years ago = very happy momment.

destroy: i saw the need a couple years ago and while they get my respect and all that the singer's freaky eye rolling sums up how i felt about them (based on the show).

Paul Barclay, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you take that back, ned!

I STAND BY MY BELIEF. But note I didn't say *everything* else on those labels. ;-)

Bratmobile "Girls Get Busy" is a bit dull and Unwound "Leaves Turn Inside You" is dishwater apart from the opening stereopantastic twang - one of the best sounds ever on CD.

Did anyone else hear this posthumous EP from Explode into Colors out of Portland, OR? Pretty great, groovy dub-punk stuff.

Marnie Stern is phenom upon initial listening but the fret-tapping schtick gets old extremely, surprisngly fast. I'm less impressed by her "solos" and more wish she would employ it with a more pop mindset. Mostly it's just taking the "noise" subgenre a little too literally

kelpolaris, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

Saw her live the other month tho, great show & she's cute as all hell. okbyenow

kelpolaris, Wednesday, 27 April 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

Also, she's funny.

for whatever reason, I turned on notifications from KRS on youtube, and was notified of this new video and single from Shaylee called "Audrey" and it was so good I listened to it 50 times in about 3 days, and today I've been going down a Shaylee rabbit hole and I haven't been so impressed with somebody's knack for indie pop since discovering Amy Linton or Rose Melberg or Calvin Johnson or Sam Cooked (yes Shaylee is from Oly WA)

What's next KRS??

cerebral halsey (rip van wanko), Sunday, 6 December 2020 17:13 (four years ago)

*Coomes damn phone. Although Sam Cooked is making me laugh
