I'm sure this is an obvious statement, but Born Slippy would be a very boring first place, so just please keep this in mind.

billstevejim, Monday, 15 December 2008 07:58 (sixteen years ago)

'jumbo'

doesn't seem to be going much of anywhere at first but it keeps building in a very subtle manner and is strangely sort of moving.

soup kitchen electro (omar little), Monday, 15 December 2008 08:02 (sixteen years ago)

I'm gonna have to go for "Dirty" because of that weird, melancholy horn-like sound that keeps going on, plus the Akira sample in the end of the song. That was the first Underworld song I heard, and nothing they've done afterwards has really topped it for me, it's just so evocative. "Dirty" also get bonus points for having no vocals, which tend to be the weakest part of their tunes.

Tuomas, Monday, 15 December 2008 08:06 (sixteen years ago)

voted jumbo also

No arguments from me -- Born Slippy is maybe, MAYBE the 10th or 11th best song on here.

"Dark And Long"

Geir Hongro, Monday, 15 December 2008 10:08 (sixteen years ago)

oh, "Jumbo" is the one I always turn up to maximum.

I reckons it sounds like Wire.

Mark G, Monday, 15 December 2008 10:19 (sixteen years ago)

Pearls Girl

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2008 11:17 (sixteen years ago)

MOANER

Matt P, Monday, 15 December 2008 11:20 (sixteen years ago)

Could vote happily for anything between (and including) Skyscraper and King of Snake. Probably going Pearls Girl or Jumbo though.

I'd been not buying this as I have most (all?) of the tracks already, but I'm quite tempted now I've thought about the tracklisting. (Or just make my own, but hey.)

Really stupid thing I did: sold Everything Everything because I thought I was, like, OVER Underworld. Nope.

lambada calculus (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 15 December 2008 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

Pearls Girl here. Sizzling from start to finish.

rentboy, Monday, 15 December 2008 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

Brothers a little sale on uhhh on on vests, at uhhh WalMart. Nine doller. (Oh yeah?) Eight seventy, yeah. Nice little vests, light

Matt P, Monday, 15 December 2008 11:33 (sixteen years ago)

I love "cups"

Matt P, Monday, 15 December 2008 11:33 (sixteen years ago)

Obvious choice but Cowgirl is the perfect combination of cryptic lyrics and acid house euphoria. Love every track on here except Moaner - a great band. 8 Ball's underrated.

Dorianlynskey, Monday, 15 December 2008 11:40 (sixteen years ago)

why you do not love MOANER ?

Matt P, Monday, 15 December 2008 11:42 (sixteen years ago)

tbh if i could have picked it, the last 2/3s of "cups" would have taken my vote. i don't think i've ever heard a synth "riff" that epic. i pretty much love all of 'beaucoup fish.' then i listened to dubnobasswithmyheadman, then other stuff, so what do i know

Matt P, Monday, 15 December 2008 11:47 (sixteen years ago)

someone should vote for 'push upstairs'. surprised cups isnt on this comp, seems odd

ohhhh we pop champagne (deej), Monday, 15 December 2008 11:49 (sixteen years ago)

god damn i was pretty disconnected / unaware of a lot of the rave-ier end of dance when it was actually happening here but nothing makes me want to do strange drugs and get fucked up in a warehouse with flashing lights and lots of other fucked up ppl like underworld.

ohhhh we pop champagne (deej), Monday, 15 December 2008 11:52 (sixteen years ago)

^^^^ yes

Matt P, Monday, 15 December 2008 11:59 (sixteen years ago)

Moaner's just the least interesting track here - relentless boshing techno. Not that there's anything wrong with relentless boshing techno per se, but next to Cowgirl or Jumbo or Dirty Epic it's a bit monochrome.

Dorianlynskey, Monday, 15 December 2008 12:06 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but those lyrics !

i want everything that sounds like this track ever made, plz send me relentless boshing techno.

Matt P, Monday, 15 December 2008 12:35 (sixteen years ago)

going with JUMBO also. CLICK.

it's a Trick Roll.

voted Dirty Epic.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 15 December 2008 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, well if you're gonig to play that game, Underworld's remix of Sven Vath's 'Harlequin - The Beauty And The Beast' is right up there with anything on this comp.

Background Zombie (CharlieNo4), Monday, 15 December 2008 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

yes, but which mix? there are 2. we could do an Underworld remixes poll too because their mixes of Black Sky are also fantastic.

Disagreeing with Tuomas so hard here

CITY LOVES A BOYFRIEND

there are so many fucking great tracks here (Tuomas completely RONG about what makes Underworld great btw)

Ca-hoot na na na oh oh (HI DERE), Monday, 15 December 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

I would have voted "Born Slippy (original)" in a heartbeat, tho

Ca-hoot na na na oh oh (HI DERE), Monday, 15 December 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

I'll concede that I might not find them as big a deal if he wasn't singing fucked up and surreal lyrics but there are a ton of lovely vocal parts in Underworld's repertoire. I really don't know what to vote for here, started w/ Dark & Long and went right round to Moaner... Dirty Epic challenging too etc etc

i'm stabbin' my way to the top (DJ Mencap), Monday, 15 December 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

There was a little drawing of a heart next to that,
followed by an exclaimation mark.
The back of his was covered in stuff... stuff like:
Brandon is not a very nice guy, but Alex is sooo nice.
And that had the exclaimation thing too.
It was just silly crap that hit the spot. And he let himself be drawn in.

First album is pretty untouchable, and there are great moments on the next 2 as well.

Surprised at only one mention of Mmm Skyscraper, so I'm going to vote that.

Neil S, Monday, 15 December 2008 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

please to be making underworld remixes thread

Home made ectoplasm (I am using your worlds), Monday, 15 December 2008 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

The thing about the vocals is that, well, for instance ... I would possibly agree that "Moaner" was just relentless boshing techno if the vocals weren't doing just as much rhythmic and dynamic work as a less-relentless instrumental track would; there is nothing necessarily better or smarter or less crude about coding that work into the synths instead of doing it through a vocal performance.

(I also love the rigorously simple structure of that song, btw, which spends exactly half the time doing an uphill boshing-techno climb, then starts over and repeats the exact same thing only New and Improved Now with Added Vocals!)

Two Months Off

bidfurd, Monday, 15 December 2008 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

I went with MMm Skyscraper I love you - cause I think they were cribbing for Born Slippy with that one and the former is still more fun to listen to today for me.

BlackIronPrison, Monday, 15 December 2008 21:21 (sixteen years ago)

yes...yes...yes...no...

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2008 21:59 (sixteen years ago)

best remix OF Underworld imo: Jedis Sugar Hit mix of Jumbo (soft spot for ChickenLips mix of Dinosaur Adventure 3D also)
best remix BY Underworld imo: the beatless mix of Depeche Mode's 'Barrel Of A Gun' just for the pads

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

best remix of Underworld is clearly the Salt City Orchestra remix of Cups. they started their most recent webcast with the Soft mix of Barrel of a Gun last week. the entire show was filled with lush ambient pieces by Underworld including one fantastic collaboration with Brian Eno. listen again link works on UWLive website.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:33 (sixteen years ago)

One of these six, I think:

Dark & Long (Dark Train)
Pearls Girl
Jumbo
Moaner
King Of Snake
Two Months Off

Eric H., Monday, 15 December 2008 22:36 (sixteen years ago)

Given they peaked 10 years or so ago Underworld should be sounding pretty dated right about now. But they still sound fucking great! (and yeah, the vocals are a big reason why)

bidfurd, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:37 (sixteen years ago)

their newest song, Strumpet, is fantastic. check out the version from Oct. 31st / Brixton.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

I might vote for "Push Upstairs" just to give it some love, it is such a massively underrated amazing amazing tune.

Runners up would be "Jumbo" and "Moaner". Beacoup Fish is my favourite of theirs by some margin. It's the raviest. Deej OTM above about Underworld being the best ambassadors in the world for dancing in warehouses with flashing lights.

Tim F, Monday, 15 December 2008 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno about warehouses but arenas certainly :]

Moaner and Push Upstairs are still my least favourites on this tho, and i never got why they bothered putting both versions of Dirty on this but not the original Dark & Long

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2008 23:09 (sixteen years ago)

fuckers are refusing to do an indoors anywhere with flashing lights show, only playing outdoors on the beach with Eric Prydz :( :(

nine years since they've been here!

flack bag (sic), Monday, 15 December 2008 23:11 (sixteen years ago)

Yes to a remix thread. So many great ones: One Dove, Bjork, Spooky, Leftfield…

No love for Spikee? I used to be obsessed with those big stabs and the late arrival of the guitar riff.

Looks like I should revisit Moaner after Nabisco's eloquent defence. I remember not rating it at the time but that was years ago.

Dorianlynskey, Monday, 15 December 2008 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno about warehouses but arenas certainly :]

Ywah I was gonna say, good luck catching them pretty much any time where it doesn't finish by like 11pm... in the UK maybe like one actual quasi-rave in London and then a bunch of standard rock gig-type things everywhere else :(

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 21 December 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

Genuinely surprised by this - I'd expected either Born Slippy or Cowgirl to walk it. Evidently the top two have something the others don't, given the split vote elsewhere.

Matt DC, Sunday, 21 December 2008 03:16 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno, there's not a huge difference between 7 votes and 3 really.

I feel sad for "King of Snake" :-(

Tim F, Sunday, 21 December 2008 03:17 (sixteen years ago)

Missed this, but I would've voted Dirty Epic anyway probably.

rox qua rox (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 December 2008 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

#1 and #2 are probably my 2 favorite Underworld songs. Happy times.
