Inpirational guitarist.

Home made ectoplasm (I am using your worlds), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

and a great, understated folk voice.

just thinking of the bands that owe an obvious debt : Led Zep, Pentangle, The Smiths, Simon & Garfunkel, Fairport ... this guy was responsible for a lot of awfully good music. And of course his own recordings are sublime.

It was that age-old method of inspiring people by making it look easy.

and when people found it wasn't quite so easy, they still persevered.

Funnily enough, I saw that Bob Monkhouse (and subsequently, his surviving family) was going to donate all his old video archive to 'missing presumed wiped' the BBC. Mostly, it was stuff BMonkhouse had saved of his own telly appearances (sitcoms, variety shows, etc), but as he was one of the first to 'discover' Davy Graham, I wondered if any archive footage of him might be in there.

We may yet find out.

sorry to hear this - such a distinctive and original musician. the album with shirley collins is very beautiful.

there is great footage of him singing/playing in losey's 'the servant'

RIP -- straight up giant of the acoustic guitar. Even if most people haven't heard of him, they've no doubt heard plenty of rip-offs/homages ...

Aah, what a shame. Never got to see the guy live either. I don't think he ever got what was due to him, what with him being such an innovator, yet so little-known.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

I think he got enough of what he wanted.

He could have done the "Legendary Davy Graham" tour, but was content to do as much/little as necessary. The last tour I heard of was in cahoots with "Voice of the Seven Woods" a year or so ago.

His cover of Both Sides Now was one of my most played songs this year. Sad news, etc.
