Silver Sun: Classic or Dud?

Acquired their album recently. I only knew the track "Golden Skin" previously. My only complaint would be that Nigel Godrich's production is rather monochrome for an album of songs of differing mood and tempo. My fave track has got to be "Julia". It has a real summery sound.

so, Silver Sun, anyone?

MarkH, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No thanks.

Jesus H Christ, that's a Godrich production? Fuck me dead. I hadn't even realised.

I loved the self-titled album when it first came out. The singles from that record are pretty good. But everything released after the album was not quite so good. Plus the singer appeared to be quite a tosser. Moreso than most.

So it's a Godrich production. Does it sound like Led Zeppelin III?

J Blount, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No. But it doesn't sound like Radiohead either. Hence the surprise. I'd always taken N.G. to be a production one-trick pony

In a recent article on A, NME stated that Silver Sun's first album was better than Pet Sounds.

Wyndham Earl, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well if you're going to dedicate an entire article to A how is anyone supposed to take what you write in it seriously?

LaGomera, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Silver sun were ace. That first album was a perfect POP album, I don't think there was a bad track on it. Lava is still one of my favourite songs ever. Shame about that 2nd album

Silver Sun belong in a pit with Angelica and Swirl360 and Electrasy and whoever sang "Molly can kick like a mule" in that annals of late 90s Melody Maker friendly indie bullshit.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That Molly song would be by Carrie then. Also a great song. Shit I'm showing my love of disposable indie pop now aren't i?

jellybean, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is nothing wrong with Angelica. But Swirl 360 I will quite happily agree with. During my brief 'listening to Virgin Radio' stage (they must be alternative, they play Monaco!) that was on all the time... grr.

I can't really remember Silver Sun. I do remember their singer being on Never Mind The Buzzcocks and being a bit twatty, but I haven't got much recollection of what their songs sounded like. I know it was 'guitar pop stuff', but not much other than that.

i don't remember Swirl360, but Cube were fucking horribly wrong.

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh. Cube. New Electrics. Fixed Stars. Seafruit. XFM circa 1999. Robin Banks in the morning. Jeff Young at weekends. Tom Binns at breakfast.

You bastard.
