With Whom Do You Like To Talk About Pop?

Prompted by something that Tom E said. Old friends or rank strangers? People you agree with, people you don't? On line or over a pint? What makes a good interlocutor?

Most of my friends have fairly well-established views and it's often difficult to get a fresh perspective. That's why I'm up for talking about music with anyone anytime! On-line is good, but time consuming and constraining. I prefer meandering from topic to topic over a pint.

Online lately. I think the knowledge pool is larger. I learn more online.

with people who know more (not difficult) about bands that I like, about music theory/composition, about genres that I want to get into (jazz, classical) who aren't affected or condescending and who are passionate about what they like

I don't like confrontation, and it seems pointless to try to convince people to change their opinions when you have different tastes. But then I like to watch. Cos those people, they're believers!

Oh, online, no question. I don't know interested / interesting people offline.

One of the reasons I like pop music, as opposed to obscure split channel Merzbow 7"s with bondage photos on the front, is that you can generally talk about it with almost anyone. I prefer people with a broad taste who are capable of defending their judgements, and don't believe in fixed definitions (all dance music = rubbish) etc., but since I live in the world, not my head, I don't expect to find them all the time.

OK, so I also like the Merzbow. I once tried to get my father to buy me _Spice World_ and _Music for Bondage_ for Christmas, in the hope that he'd be arrested in Tower Records for buying an obscene combination of CDs.

Weekday Mornings/Afternoons: you lot.

Weekday Evenings: Josh, Maura, Fred, Ally, Greg and the rest of the IM massive.

Friday Evenings: Luminaries of the UK indie scene, or failing that no mention of pop at all.

Saturday Mornings, 11:30-12:30: The Crouch End.

Sundays: Isabel.

My sister is pretty fascinating for conversations about pop, because her perspective is so warped. Carter USM the greatest band of the 90's? Um.

Hardly anybody else lately, because I don't really see many of the people I know in real life that I used to have good conversations with about pop. Though I did just have a conversation about how ugly the poster for the Bonnie Prince Billy album was. Does that count?

Do I talk about pop offline? Sort of, but people don't tend to want to listen. Sing along to pop? You bet. Sing along with others to pop? Sometimes. Have minimalist "This is a great song," "Yeah it is," conversations? Damn straight. Talk about R. Kelly style R&B? Often. Talk about indie-bands? far too often, just coz people tend to want to more.

anyone who will listen! :)

"With whom do you like to talk to"?

Is this a tribute to Paul McCartney & Wings's "in this ever changing world in which we live in" pinefox? Actually, I once heard Macca claim that it's really "in this ever changing world in which we're living" which is still lame even if it is grammatical.

With respect, Nick: not for the first time, I don't know what you're talking about. The title of the thread is WITH WHOM DO YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT POP?, which is as grammatical as Stephin Merritt could want.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 24 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's really spooky. I looked at that twice and it said "With Whom Do You Like To Talk To About Pop" and now it erm.. doesn't. Now I look like an idiot. Sorry, pinefox. I didn't get enough sleep last night.

Anyone besides Fred, who takes pop discussions, generally, as an excuse to take out his anger towards me. Hell, if the discussion at the little mini-meet in NYC kept going the way it was, it probably would've come to me throwing a drink in his face (again).

Seriously, I think I like talking to my dad about pop music the most, not that I do it that often but because it's always so funny. The best was when I called and he answered the phone, the conversation went like this: Me: Hey! Him: Hi! How are you? Me: I'm okay, how are you? Him: I'm okay. I'm sorry but I don't like that Blur band though. Me: Erm, why are you sorry?

Very random. My mom is great too because she's so frustrating, she knows no artists, no song names, and really very little of the songs themselves, she just can kind of describe them in a vague way. My friend Chuck is fantastic for music discussions because everything is so black and white and overblown: Madonna saved all things ever culturally and is responsible for all cultural movements since 1982, the Who are the most useless band ever, 98 Degrees are - and I quote - "amazing". In terms of online, Tom is always good for a discussion. Ned and Jane too, though I fear I just go on and on about the Manics with Jane - kindred spirit there, Ned should never have told me that fact ;)

Ever wonder what it would be like if Julie Burchill and Tony Parsons posted to the same message board?

I don't have to. ;-)

Lots of the people on here, like Tom or Mark S for instance. My old friend (and ILXer) Andrew L and his ex-flatmate, and other old friends who like this kind of thing. Sometimes my oldest friend (months away from 30 years) when he isn't being hopelessly contrarian. And strangers who interest or appeal to me. It's a great conversation (or many conversations, if you're lucky) with new/prospective girlfriends who have a passion for music.
