if they'd picked "requiem" instead of "tomorrow's world" it'd be killing joke in a walk. if they'd picked "deathwish" or "dogs" or "evening falls" or really anything off "catastrophe ballet" it'd be Christian Death but they picked the song I won't rep for despite its killer riff because fuck off rozz with you lol n-word crap. throbbing gristle will get best-band-on-list votes and the sounds are creepy for sure but "hamburger lady" isn't really so much to listen to. "dieche" is OK but it's no "mauritia mayer." wtf if "morning dew" doing on here instead of anything off "drawings of patient o.t." rubicon played at cal jam II. the bolshoi = the alarm with a different tailor. I like skinny puppy fine but can't really tell any one of their songs from any of the others. who doesn't love the misfits? but no way. kommunity fk gets the win from me even though again this comp has the wrong song. I would do more exgoth nitpicking but I see that it's raining so i have to stare idly out the window now.

J0hn D., Wednesday, 17 December 2008 04:25 (sixteen years ago)

"Assimilate" for me.

Might've been Kommunity FK if the selection were "Something Inside Me Has Died," but it wasn't.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 04:59 (sixteen years ago)

the bolshoi = the alarm with a different tailor.

LOL, okay I'm not a big fan of either of them, but I'm really not sure that comparison works. I like your stream-of-consciousness monologue, though, John. :)

I bought a Kommunity FK album in the 80's and only liked one song on it. Recently, a friend happened to have the record and put it on and even that one song didn't do much for me now. I don't even remember the name of it.

I don't know what the hell I'm going to vote for on this one. Might just have to give it to the Damned even if it isn't one of my fave songs of theirs.

Beehive Reptile (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 05:10 (sixteen years ago)

The right Damned choice would have been "The Dog."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 05:27 (sixteen years ago)

Would love to vote for Throbbing Gristle or Christian Death or something, but though I basically agree with J0hn, re: Skinny Puppy, "Assimilate" RULES. By far my favorite song on the list. So that.

Suggest Ban Permalink (contenderizer), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

I almost voted for the Bolshoi because I remember it and it seems to fit the time and style, but when I saw "Melody Lee", I went to the shelf and put on Machine Gun Etiquette.

Who cares about a scene and style that was never defined or claimed until it was over. Melody Lee is my second favorite song on my favorite Damned album.

james k polk, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 05:49 (sixteen years ago)

Einsturzende for me.

ilxor, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 05:55 (sixteen years ago)

Who cares about a scene and style that was never defined or claimed until it was over.

the only time any scene's even worth a second look is prior to its definition/claiming/standardization/freezing-in-amber! true with "goth" even more than other scenes, hence its early vitality - when it was "death rock" or just punx with more makeup

J0hn D., Wednesday, 17 December 2008 06:50 (sixteen years ago)

Went the prunes.

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 07:35 (sixteen years ago)

This CD is actually way better than CD2

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:57 (sixteen years ago)

I'll probably vote for Christian Death but "So What", "Pagan Love Song" and "Assimilate" are tempting.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 09:01 (sixteen years ago)

Also, I love "Morning Dew" but it doesn't really belong here.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 09:01 (sixteen years ago)

James K OTM: 'Melody Lee' will do nicely, though I might have gone for 'Plan 9 Channel 7' from the same album.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 09:08 (sixteen years ago)

I don't want to get into the argument over whether Neubauten were Goths or not, but I will assert that, in his day, Blixa sported the best Goth hair that any male human being ever had, and undoubtedly taught Nick Cave a thing or too about personal grooming.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 10:00 (sixteen years ago)

Xtian Death tune was a lot better when I thought it was "burning crosses on a neighbor's lawn."

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

Also "Dieche" is "the used CD no one ever wants to buy from me."

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

This CD is WAAAAAYYY better than CD2.

Aaaah, Sex Gang Children.. though I can't actually remember how that song goes. VIRGIN PRUNES!!!! Oh, I want to vote for them, but alas, alack...

I was actually singing Christian Death on the walk home from the bus stop ("new moon shining like the untouched ASS of the boy next door...") and Romeo's Distress has such a KILLER bassline.

Neubauten, however, were never EVER goth. WTF? Blixa Bargeld's hair has so much to answer for.

Ironic Erection (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 18 December 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

("new moon shining like the untouched ASS of the boy next door...")

That is so Prufrock, I'm surprised it wasn't an influence on Morrissey!

Mark G, Thursday, 18 December 2008 00:46 (sixteen years ago)

new moon shining? even morrissey knows a new moon doesn't shine.

f. hazel, Thursday, 18 December 2008 02:35 (sixteen years ago)

Virgin Prunes. Second place: Neubauten.

xhuxk, Thursday, 18 December 2008 02:55 (sixteen years ago)

...really like Party Time by 45 Grave.

Dan S, Thursday, 18 December 2008 03:35 (sixteen years ago)

Neubauten, however, were never EVER goth. WTF?

Sigh. Again, they were part of the scene. As were Skinny Puppy, Nurse With Wound, and a load of other industrial bands.

Unless the goth/industrial marriage is being ignored in history? I dunno.

Assimilate is a really weak Skinny Puppy song. I dont much care for any of the songs on this one.

Trayce, Thursday, 18 December 2008 05:14 (sixteen years ago)

But I guess I was always more of a synth and new wave goth than a death/swamp rocker.

Trayce, Thursday, 18 December 2008 05:15 (sixteen years ago)

waht, "Assimilate" is awesome and Bites is the best Skinny Puppy album

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Thursday, 18 December 2008 06:19 (sixteen years ago)

^^ this.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 18 December 2008 06:27 (sixteen years ago)

I'll probably vote for Christian Death but "So What", "Pagan Love Song" and "Assimilate" are tempting.

These are my choices exactly too.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 18 December 2008 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

"Blixa Bargeld's hair has so much to answer for."

"Your hair has so much to answer for" is the B side of the next Morrissey single, but everybody knows it's all about Blixa really.

Soukesian, Thursday, 18 December 2008 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

i have no idea what song to vote for on this CD.

Bee OK, Friday, 19 December 2008 05:53 (sixteen years ago)

I have never given a single shit about Christian Death.

Bat Penatar (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:28 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, Bimblepaws, I might have just stopped liking you.

The first CD album is stone cold classic. There are some good moments on some of the others, but it's diminishing returns from there, but that first one is still great. Basically, the more Valour, the worse the CD album.

Ironic Erection (Masonic Boom), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:31 (sixteen years ago)

Oh alright, I'll give the first album a try, but that is the LAST TIME.

In the meantime I'm listening to The Cult's "Love" album and I don't give a shit what anyone thinks about it.

Bat Penatar (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:42 (sixteen years ago)

I will also rep for the 1st Christian Death album.

I voted the Damned in this poll though.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 19 December 2008 10:37 (sixteen years ago)

Virgin Prunes! Definitely the right song choice for them, right? I still hear that (and "Baby Turns Blue") in certain clubs and a few people will always go nuts and sing along to all the words ;-)

lynshroom, Friday, 19 December 2008 11:38 (sixteen years ago)

OH GOD NOW I WANT TO HEAR BABY TURNS BLUE

Ironic Erection (Masonic Boom), Friday, 19 December 2008 12:03 (sixteen years ago)

Hamburger Lady should automatically win any poll it's on.

Nate Carson, Friday, 19 December 2008 12:28 (sixteen years ago)

Colonel Poo repped for the Damned! *high five* Damn, where's Stewart Osborne when we need him?

Hamburger Lady is a great, great track. But it just doesn't belong on this thing. I don't think Einsturzende belong here either, but ya'll were right about the classick-ness of Blixa's hair.

Bat Penatar (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 19 December 2008 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

I'd rather listen to any era of the cult than christian death myself

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 19 December 2008 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

Christian Death are really interesting - on paper. I can't get into their music, but then, I can't get into Kiss either, and I've given both the kind of chin-stroking attention that Wire readers normally devote to Brian Eno side projects. Time and place, I reckon, and that's got a hell of a lot to do with everything I do like on these discs.

Soukesian, Friday, 19 December 2008 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

Hamburger Lady is too creeps-giving to win things. Go Hamburger lady and all, but no winning for you.

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Friday, 19 December 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

Okay I'm playing the first 12" by The Mission for the first time in over 20 years. I hope you're happy, goth ilxors. Might as well put black makeup on my face.

Playing early Christian Death now and not quite convinced yet...it's okay...

I appreciate Rudimentary Peni, that's all I'm gonna say. Colonel Poo, tell them about "Death Church".

Bat Penatar (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 19 December 2008 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

My Death Church poster foldout is framed and hanging in my dining room.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 20 December 2008 02:40 (sixteen years ago)

gotta be Gristle

sujban stephens (Curt1s Stephens), Saturday, 20 December 2008 06:49 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 21 December 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Monday, 22 December 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

Wow. TG fans are, by definition, lurkers, but the Skinny Puppy vote is surprising. The Damned/Misfits/Xtian Death dogfight is interesting - can we talk about that?

Soukesian, Monday, 22 December 2008 00:13 (sixteen years ago)

the CD album Bimble needs to hear is Catastrophe Ballet - Only Theatre is cool if you were there at the time, but Catastrophe Ballet is good for all time

J0hn D., Monday, 22 December 2008 03:01 (sixteen years ago)

by the way those of you who hadn't heard "To Blame" but voted against it are gonna feel like dumbasses when you hear "To Blame"

J0hn D., Monday, 22 December 2008 03:02 (sixteen years ago)

I just remember Catastrophe Ballet being really... well, silly! But then again, what goth didn't seem silly out of context?

You only like him coz he's sexually appalling (Masonic Boom), Monday, 22 December 2008 03:20 (sixteen years ago)

well yes I imagine a guy affected an English accent is gonna sound silly to Britishes but so goes all Cali goth :)

J0hn D., Monday, 22 December 2008 03:23 (sixteen years ago)

affecting, sorry, drinkin'

J0hn D., Monday, 22 December 2008 03:23 (sixteen years ago)

not agreeing with these results. ILM goths, I love you but you've let me down.

baaderonixx, Monday, 22 December 2008 09:29 (sixteen years ago)

o_O at results

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

mainly ppl who hadn't heard most of the rest of the tracks I'd guess

J0hn D., Wednesday, 24 December 2008 03:00 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah this Hamburger Lady shit needs to GO. That is not goth, people. You've totally missed the boat if you think that's what goth is. I mean you know, I adore Genesis, but please.

Geese Is The Word (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

Hamburger Lady is not goth, which who cares?, but more importantly is not good for listening to (though props for being super freaky), but COME ON!, you knew it was gonna win. It's the only rock crit pre-approved non-jam in the set. Expected better from Morning Dew. That's the big surprise as far as I'm concerned. And congrats to Assimilate peoples. You did good.
