i can't remember if it's women's realm or too much love i like best.

this was played loads by schoolmates, but i can only remember about 3 or 4 of them off by hand, probably "don't leave the light on baby"

i wonder how b&s would be seen if they'd never released this album? it was the only severe dip in quality of their career, but it also came at completely the wrong time - turn of the century meaning that many emmigrating fans would write them off as a strictly '90s act and would skip any future releases believing that FYHCYWLAP signified a jumping of the shark and a steady decline, which isn't true judging by what came after. it could also be argued that the album became the reason a lot of criticism and further assinuation of tweeness was heaped on B&S - some truly icky moments courtesy of "Family Tree" and "Chalet Lines" did nothing to help this. But had they skipped straight to Dear Catastrophe Waitress, would those turncoats really exist?

Really hate the title of this album. Have never knowingly heard it though.

I'm pretty sure I've never again listened to this since the year it came out.

it's just really hit and miss. there's maybe 2-3 really great songs on there, 2-3 meh songs and the rest are horrors.

boil it down to an ep containing:
"I Fought in a War"
"The Model"
"Don't Leave the Light On Baby"
"Women's Realm"
"There's Too Much Love"

I don't think I've heard of anyone else who likes Beyond the Sunrise.

I totally love this album and find it unfairly maligned. I'm kind of mystified at why people dis it.

Womans Realm is clearly the winner though..

I don't think this is a horrible album, but it is definitely one in a fairly long stretch from Boy With The Arab Strap through Dear Catastrophe Waitress where the quality of songs was really hit-or-miss. It seemed for a long time like they were having some consistency or quality control issues.

But then, I'm one of those weirdos who think that The Life Pursuit is their best album since If You're Feeling Sinister.

I'm voting for "Don't Leave The Light On Baby". "I Fought In A War" is a close second. Honestly, there are several songs on here that I like, but none are stone-cold classics.

yeah i like this record. not their best, but still nice. take out "beyond the sunrise", "Chalet lines", "nice day for a sulk" and replace them with contemporaneous EP tracks, and you've got a sweet record. "chalet lines" always did bug me. maybe especially the fact that it was followed up by "nice day for a sulk." yecch. i voted for "too much love".

I never play this but you know, looking at the tracklist there's a lot I like on here. Voted "Don't leave the light on."

Definitely. I think it's a really beautiful album.

i hated it when it came out but like it more now. I think the life pursuit is much much worse. anyway, I like "i fought in a war" and "women's realm"

a few duds, yea, but i love this album. i'd rather listen to it than tigermilk..

I used to own this and can't remember anything about it besides "The Model," "The Wrong Girl," and the title lines of "Nice Day" and "I Fought In The War." Definitely used to put it on from time to time, I guess it just never really stuck. It was the only one of theirs that I ever owned, though, so I didn't really come as a fan trying to unpack its mysteries.

Dear Catastrophe Waitress was playing in a shop the other day and sounded really good to me, wonder if I should check that out...

Dear Catastrophe Waitress and The Life Pursuit (<--especially this one) have turned into my favorites, with Sinister and Tigermilk and the Lazy Line Painter Jane single being the only other ones I'd bother to continue owning.

This album rules and is dope and great as well. “Too Much Love” obviously should have crushed this poll followed by “The Model” because this album is all about the joyful, unrestrained strings.

I should go back to this one. It's never the one I reach for if I get the inclination to revisit B&S

There are more dud tracks than usual but the jigjs, especially the two tracks I mentioned, are sublime

I think The Model was one of the first songs I ever heard by this band. Too Much Love is one of their greatest songs. I like Woman's Realm too. It's just very patchy and starts a bit like it's going to be some sort of mad concept album and a break from the past before going into slightly-uncomfortable tweeness. That said I think the preceding album is also really patchy.

Really? I don't consider Arab Strap patchy, unless you find all of their records patchy (which I could see). For me FYHCYLLAP def is their first really uneven album. Dear Catastrophe Waitress was their last good album imo.

and "Dress Up In You", "Another Sunny Day" and "Mornington Crescent" all might make my B&S POX

Yeah there's a lot on Arab Strap I love (Sleep the Clock and the title track) and a lot I just don't really enjoy much at all.

DCW is maybe my favourite even though the first two albums are objectively better. Life Pursuit is really really great but a little bit too long. After that, I have no idea because for me B&S was a bright-burning obsession with me for just a short period in the mid-2000s.

'Dress Up In You' is indeed fantastic

You know what else is great? the B-side 'Desperation Made A Fool Of Me'.
