This is the best metal album of all time IMO.

country matters, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 11:12 (sixteen years ago)

...and I'm torn between about 5 tracks, tbh.

country matters, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

oh "country matters"

the HOOS from the hilarious internet connection (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

Neurosis: Through Classic or Dud?

Agent ov Fortune (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

that cover is ugly

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

locust star!

that song exhibits much of what works best for this band

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 18 December 2008 05:52 (sixteen years ago)

reluctantly narrowed it down to a straight fight between "purify" and "enclosure in flame"

country matters, Thursday, 18 December 2008 09:10 (sixteen years ago)

This Locust Star video could be the best thing on Youtube, ever:

no-nonsense, Thursday, 18 December 2008 09:56 (sixteen years ago)

I saw this tour. I've never owned the album though. I thought they'd fallen off a bit during this period. But they caught me back again with Times of Grace which I've always thought was far superior (as far as later catalog Neurosis discs go).

Nate Carson, Thursday, 18 December 2008 12:58 (sixteen years ago)

this record is pretty much the consensus pick, and with good reason, everyone who likes anything by this band needs to hear it

country matters, Thursday, 18 December 2008 13:01 (sixteen years ago)

"locust star" is gonna take this but it totally deserves to. the part where they ride that riff out at the end is the best thing ever. "purify" is a close second for me.

albini's production really, really works for this band but that's about the only about times of grace that I like better than through silver (particularly the bass sound, which is kind of lame on tsib). but title track aside, the second half of tog kinda drags. and (pet peeve but...) I've always HATED how they don't repeat that awesome riff at the beginning of "the last you'll know" more than a couple times. I mean, this is neurosis, they should've driven that thing into the ground!! and then the rest of the song turns into a bit of a slog.

original bgm, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

point is, the songwriting on tsib strikes me as more focused. (something my last post was not...) less fat, all killer, no filler, etc.

original bgm, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

the album is always marching onwards somewhere, it is never stuck in a holding pattern, it never compromises its vision, and it unfolds its demonic visions like a motherfucker before crushing itself stone-dead

country matters, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

there is such skill, subtlety and thought going into every decision on this album

country matters, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

well, I could do without the little industrial movie sample tracks like "rehumanize".

original bgm, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha ok "rehumanize" is the collective breath for respite after shitting-christ opening track, and "become the ocean" separates midsection from final assault

i don't expect either to get any votes but stranger things have happened ;)

country matters, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

I think they're effective mood-sustainers!

country matters, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I think I can go with that. they're not bad or anything but I think "rehumanize" does overstay its welcome a teeny bit, imo. maybe if it were 30secs or so...

original bgm, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

ah man, you say it like the album's demerited by an overlong 1 3/4-minute ambient interlude :-P

man that huge riff about 4 mins into "purify" is like spiritualized's "come together" gone 400x more badass

country matters, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

haha, just getting super-picky because this thing is just about flawless! this is one of my fave albums ever!

original bgm, Thursday, 18 December 2008 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

System, Thursday, 25 December 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

WTF 5 votes shared by "Eye" and "Rehumanize" that is some seriously fucked-up shit

that's HALF THE VOTES CAST, 3 for a nice if slight 5-minute riff cycle, 2 for a fucking ambient sampled interlude

jesus christ, ILM, if it weren't for me NONE of the long-form tracks wd've gotten a vote, yer all CRAZY

and you have pathetic attention-spans

i mean more than half the tracks are long-form and they're the 5 best tracks of metal pretty much ever i feel like i'm eating stupid pills here

what i am trying to say is MERRY CHRISTMAS IN HELL

baby got bahn (country matters), Thursday, 25 December 2008 06:24 (sixteen years ago)

polls are pretty much bullshit anyhow

baby got bahn (country matters), Thursday, 25 December 2008 06:25 (sixteen years ago)

there you go

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Thursday, 25 December 2008 06:26 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

re-screen this motherfucker and it's the most intense shit on earth. 'aeon' is the fever-nightmare gutpunch, 'purify' the mass cult suicide, 'strength of fates' the approaching bushfire, 'enclosure in flame' the last words of a tormented maniac, 'through silver in blood' the sinking and carnage of a stricken battleship, and the rest is just out to fucking kill you (shorter songs) or at the very least terrify the soon-to-be-dead crap outta you (ambient interludes)

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Thursday, 14 January 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

eight months pass...

certainly wasn't expecting bagpipes...

Neil S, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 12:50 (fourteen years ago)

Purify is one of the greatest motherfucking songs ever written

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 12:56 (fourteen years ago)

That's right! I swear when I talk about metal! I'm a hard man, me.
