American Music Club- Love Songs For Patriots (if they were ever popular it was in the early to mids 90s)
GZA & Muggs- Grandmasters

President Keyes, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

The Fall definitely peaked commercially in the 90's. They even had a top 10 album. #9 with The Infortainment Scan but I can't imagine many people would consider that to be their creative peak. They have, however, released 3 albums since 2000 which are among their very best, The Unutterable, The Real New Fall Album (Country on the Click) and Imperial Wax Solvent.

Haha! Saw them play a couple shows in Boston during the 90s, and no, they were never popular.

Concert in Austin, TX for Love Songs For Patriots was just a poorly attended as earlier shows.

an embarrassing amount of my favorite records of the past few years fall under this description:

Sloan - Never Hear The End Of It
Firewater Psychopharmacology
The Roots - Game Theory
Scarface - The Fix
Foo Fighters - In Your Honor
Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
R.E.M. - Accelerate

ditto on Murray Street and Kid A, although I think Binaural >>> Pearl Jam

Nas's popularity absolutely peaked in the '90s! What would your pick be, though? I'm thinkin' God's Son although I'm also a big Street's Disciple apologist.

CoppaFeelie V (some dude), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

is sean price now bigger than heltah skeltah was back in the day?

Crowded House: "Time On Earth" (actually their only 00's album, but what a comeback!)
Radiohead: "In Rainbows" (evidence they hadn't quite lost it yet)
R.E.M.: "Reveal" (controversial, I know)
Supergrass: "Life On Other Planets" (actually their artistic peak IMO)
Beck: "Sea Change" (Commercially, he was more popular in the 90s)
Depeche Mode: "Playing The Angel" (provided they were at their most popular in 1990-93)
Erasure: "Nightbird" (provided they were at their most popular around the "Chorus" album and "ABBA-Esque" in 1991-92)
Chemical Brothers: "Push The Button" (again somewhat controversial, but I would consider this one of their best albums)
Pulp: "We Love Life" (Not at all popular, but very good)
Eels: "Daisies Of The Galaxy" (I guess "Beautiful Freak" must count as their most popular")

The correct Oasis entry would be "Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants", but too few people realize that.

And I second "Never Hear The End Of It" too. Marvellous album.

Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World/Phantom Power quadruple LP.
Rings is like Radiator but with fully-formed songs and even more extended thrusts into teh weirdness. And more pop, too.

ok this might sound like nonsense but -- fame is cumulative, but popularity goes up and down. lots of people now are more famous than ever, but that doesn't mean you can't pinpoint their career peak at a much earlier point. Nas's 2 biggest selling albums were '96 and '99, he got close to that again in '01 but downhill ever since, well before the collapse in rap sales in general. i guess technically you could say the same about Jay, biggest album in '98, but i think his fame and popularity have grown much more demonstrably in this decade than Nas.

uh oh I'm having a fanta girl (some dude), Thursday, 18 December 2008 04:31 (sixteen years ago)

Another vote for God's Son.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 December 2008 07:19 (sixteen years ago)

And The W, which is actually better than the two Wu-Tang albums made in the 90's.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 December 2008 07:20 (sixteen years ago)

(Not that they're good too.)

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 December 2008 07:20 (sixteen years ago)

Spiritualized - Songs in A & E
Red House Painters - Old Ramon (helps that it's their only one lol)
His Name is Alive - Detrola
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
Air - 10,000 Hz Legend
Mudhoney - Since We've Become Translucent
Teenage Fanclub - Howdy!
Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and Will Beat Your Ass
Ween - Quebec

R.E.M.: "Reveal" (controversial, I know) - Geir, OTM! :/
Radiohead: "In Rainbows" (evidence they hadn't quite lost it yet) - Kid A was arguably their peak in popularity (US #1 etc.) & was their best album anyway.

Cat-Wrangler (Pillbox), Thursday, 18 December 2008 08:01 (sixteen years ago)

Saint Etienne - Finisterre

daavid, Thursday, 18 December 2008 08:27 (sixteen years ago)

"Kid A" was Radiohead's worst album, and "OK Computer" was their best and their peak in popularity. Neither OKC nor "The Bends" (their second best album) was from the 00's though.

Are you saying 36 Chambers is bad? \o.0/

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 18 December 2008 09:45 (sixteen years ago)

No, that it's good, but The W is better. A bit of a misspelling there.
