consistently shit

Gukbe, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

i can only remember hard to handle off the top of my head, but i'd rather listen to two princes three times in a row than ever hear that again

Gukbe, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:02 (sixteen years ago)

they were playing the first album in a bar I was in yesterday. And it sounded pretty good! Though I was a big fan of that album in like 8th grade or whatever. "Hard to Handle" is, to me, irresistible, so I'm voting that.

askance johnson, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

twice as hard!

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:04 (sixteen years ago)

where is the black crowes v counting crows v sheryl crow - 1994 poll?

Gukbe, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

shake your money maker was 90 dawg, 2nd album was 92

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

Weird they put "Remedy" -> "Sting Me" on this record when it was originally "Sting Me" -> "Remedy" on Companion.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

really all the singles from the first album are winners (especially "Jealous Again") but I'm gonna go with one of the minor later ones, "Wiser Time," which has some gorgeous slide guitar.

uh oh I'm having a fanta girl (some dude), Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

xpost
unless you meant the pubes-and-stripes bikini album

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

Sting Me, easy

consistently shit

i wouldn't go that far, but what's decent that they left behind isn't close to enough to make them worth going back to

the higgs bosun (gabbneb), Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

Weird they put "Remedy" -> "Sting Me" on this record when it was originally "Sting Me" -> "Remedy" on Companion.

why? maybe the flow's better.

the higgs bosun (gabbneb), Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

interesting things about that video
- hippies on headbanger's ball
- no pot censorship
- background singers nowhere to be seen

the higgs bosun (gabbneb), Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

"impeach george bush"

the higgs bosun (gabbneb), Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

FLow's better the original way, gabby.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not sure what the exact order of the single releases was but the GH seems to be chronological

uh oh I'm having a fanta girl (some dude), Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

i like most of the first two albums, but i'm not sure they were ever better than "jealous again."

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

it's the order of single releases afaik

the higgs bosun (gabbneb), Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

"Hard to Handle" is the only one I ever really cared about. (That it's a cover is somehow significant, probably.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i only give them 3/4 credit for "hard to handle." it's a good version, but that song is hard to screw up.

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 18 December 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

ok since we're doing youtubes, here's "Wiser Time":

tremendous chorus imo

i like most of the first two albums, but i'm not sure they were ever better than "jealous again."

I endorse this post, with a few of notes.

Sister Luck would have my vote if it had been a single.

Hard To Handle has always bugged the shit out of me. Feels like a novelty.

Jealous Again > Remedy > Wiser Time

The front half of the first record is ace, Jealous Again is insanely fun and easy to play in Open G, and gukbe is a fool.

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Thursday, 18 December 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

haha this is my brain on no sleep

It's Could I've Been So Blind that's insanely easy to play and I'll take both that and Sister Luck over the singles so wtf I'm voting Remedy, But gukbe's still a fool. For an album and a half these guys were golden.

the second half of a chronological Greatest Hits by a band whose profile took a nosedive after the first two albums, duh.

I'll take both that and Sister Luck over the singles

Gotta admit I was fearful at first when I saw two Crowes threads bumped at the same time. Glad to see it was just this.

twice as hard is so damn good. gotta say tho the tiny desk version of she talks to angels kinda hit me for whatever reason.

Spottie, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 18:32 (five years ago)

hard to handle never gets old for me. just a perfectly constructed song. every sound in it is memorable.

Good Friday is underrated. kind of a nothing song nobody remembers but I dig it.

two years pass...

youtube threw me chris robinson's "40 days" after it finished "exile on main street" (monday morning baby), is there a collection of songs on that level anyone likes?

Listened to "Hard to Handle" for the first time since 1996 or so (loved it when I was a kid) - it really has no groove for an Otis cover. Zero ass shaking occurred.

great song, goofy as hell and low-key racist video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYyRLTveFJQ

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 03:52 (one year ago)

Do you think it’s racist because the backing vocalists are in the video but the aux percussion players are not?

bbq, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:32 (one year ago)

the premise of the video is that here are the black crowes (awkwardly as hell) playing their song just for you as if they were live in your living room

the backing vocalists -- who have a considerably more vital role in the song than auxiliary percussionists -- only appear when they are actually singing

i mean do i wish the backing vocalists had to stand in the background and gyrate when they weren't singing? no. but maybe also they should simply be there in the background during solos or whatever

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:56 (one year ago)

possibly they simply opted out due to the awkwardness!

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:58 (one year ago)

If you think that's bad, don't dare look at the clip for "Sting Me" (a song where the backing singers are even more crucial) where we learn the dudes didn't even take them on tour.

no. but maybe also they should simply be there in the background during solos or whatever

I did learn recently that in the "Sledgehammer" video, the chairs come walking in near the end so that the background singers could rest their feet instead of just standing there while Peter Gabriel grooved and grivved or whatever.

If I was a Black Crowes background singer, I'd be happy to take five during the solos or while Chris was slinging himself around.

pplains, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 13:56 (one year ago)

I was just listening to the Black Crowes after getting on my biannual Led Zeppelin kick.

Was not interested at all in the Jimmy Page tour with them 25 years ago. The Crowes looked like they had peaked. Jimmy had definitely peaked. Seemed like it was one step away from those strange Chicago/Earth Wind & Fire shows that come around. (How big are those stages anyway?)

But watching them play "The Wanton Song" from 25 years in the future — that actually might have been something to see.

pplains, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 14:00 (one year ago)

Jesus, that "Sting Me" video — I know you're not supposed to hold a band's fan base against them, but that's the most repellent crowd I've ever seen. I could smell them through my laptop. And the song itself being just half-assed Humble Pie karaoke doesn't help, either.
