tall dwarves vs. clean vs. chills

Zeno, Friday, 19 December 2008 02:51 (seventeen years ago)

I forgot The Enemy and Toy Love sorry Chris Knox. If you want these just say
.I find this question very difficult. Might do an albums poll too, that might be easier.

Hinklepicker, Friday, 19 December 2008 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

ill go with the dwarves

Zeno, Friday, 19 December 2008 02:53 (seventeen years ago)

this is the sort of question that would require me to write out little pros and cons chart

at least a third of these bands have a couple of songs each that are up there with the greatest ever written

my fave NZ album is by the verlaines, but i also think they have one of the more inconsistent careers here

it really comes down to the big three - clean, chills, bats. all three went on too long but have unassailable early work

gonna have to side with the bats

Minister for Compression Issues (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

It's the Clean for me with the Verlaines as strong contenders.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 19 December 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

able tasmans. verlaines are a close second but the humphreys keen record was utterly fantastic and the last verlaines not as much.

keythkeyth, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

no snapper option?

keythkeyth, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

oh there is a snapper option, sorry.

Forgot Split Enz?

van smack, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

Damn i forgot Split Enz. O.K then if you want them then go for it and we can count those votes if they are significant. there does not seem to be a way of amending a poll.

VERLAINES 4-EVAH

askance johnson, Friday, 19 December 2008 03:59 (seventeen years ago)

hey--no Pin Group !

nerve_pylon, Friday, 19 December 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

No OMC??? No Headless Chickens?

Guess I'll go with the Puddle.

xhuxk, Friday, 19 December 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

at least a third of these bands have a couple of songs each that are up there with the greatest ever written

^this is otm and it kind of never ceases to amaze me.

i got all excited when i saw the tall dwarves option, forgot about them for a while, but the 3 eps compilation cd might be one of my favorite things in the world. looks like some people are voting for em, so i'm going with dead c.

seems like there's a bunch missing around the xpressway axis and such. there are people here who know a lot more about it then i do.. i love some one-offs on compilations. weren't nocturnal projections nz? there was also some guy called omit who released a huge album, quad, sort of dark ambient/musique concrete, really great stuff. and yes, pin group were fantastic.

x-post

Mint Chicks moved to Portland.

Thompson Twins moved to New Zealand.

Nate Carson, Friday, 19 December 2008 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

Results 1 - 10 of about 6,470 for shibad. (0.19 seconds)

Matt P, Friday, 19 December 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

I ran across a noise band from down there called Light Years! that I thought was really great. Doubt they are still around though.

Nate Carson, Friday, 19 December 2008 04:43 (seventeen years ago)

TALL DWARFSe

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Friday, 19 December 2008 05:56 (seventeen years ago)

seems i forgot a few. omc only really had a couple of songs- one in particu;ar obviously, headless chooks
the same although gaskrankinstation is superlative, i don't think we will miss these two.

split enz was a bit of a mistake as was probably toy love.

Hinklepicker, Friday, 19 December 2008 06:10 (seventeen years ago)

able tasmans. verlaines are a close second but the humphreys keen record was utterly fantastic and the last verlaines not as much.

Seconding the Humphreys/Keen record. Truly wonderful and utterly forgotten by everyone. As much as I want to vote for Look Blue Go Purple or Bailterspace, I've been loving all the Able Tasmans records lately and voted for them.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 19 December 2008 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

Not really familiar with the able tasmans, I guess I should rectify that. But I did think that the last verlaines record was really really fantastic.

askance johnson, Friday, 19 December 2008 06:41 (seventeen years ago)

My favorite Kiwi band is Shocking Pinks.

By the way there's no way to change your login email address on this board.

PublicRadio, Friday, 19 December 2008 07:40 (seventeen years ago)

the dead motherfucking c you fucking children!!!

btw u forgot plagal grind/alastair galbraith.

ian, Friday, 19 December 2008 08:09 (seventeen years ago)

Forgot lots it seems. all those lil' chief bands too i.e ruby suns, brunettes etc plus peter jefferies but not really a group but who cares right? this list surely covers most of the ones that should be there- it DOES have Shibad afterall.

Hinklepicker, Friday, 19 December 2008 08:34 (seventeen years ago)

No Split Enz no credibility.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

Opted for TKoP but Dead C is as good. I never much cared for The Clean. Tall Dwarfs were pretty good as well. BUt a bit too cutesy some of those bands, like the Bats.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:10 (seventeen years ago)

Proud Scum.

But in their absence I think I'll go with the Clean. Was just watching the Flying Nun documentary on Youtube last weekend, reminded me how much I like them.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

My favorite Kiwi band is Shocking Pinks.

wow i can also remember when i'd only ever heard one new zealand band, although split enz don't totally fucking suck balls

Merry Christuomas (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

Hardly heard any of these, but The Chills are one of the best indie bands of all time

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for This Kind Of Punishment who are hugely major lifelong favourites for me. Loads of great bands there though, will be sad if the Gordons get no votes.

NickB, Friday, 19 December 2008 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

TERMINALS

noisy and psychedelic and dark and strange and the first NZ band i got into.

Manclusion (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 19 December 2008 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

ian otm

also no handful of dust or gate

Ward Fowler, Friday, 19 December 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

Was listening to Omit this week... With The Aid Of An Automatic Weapon I Gun Down My Values. Dude rules.

But probably the Clean for me. Although I haven't heard all the earlier Dead C stuff.

a bezoar formed from the nidus of an enterolith (gnarly sceptre), Friday, 19 December 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

also no shoes this high!

Manclusion (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 19 December 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

the Dead C it is

sonderangerbot, Friday, 19 December 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

clean vs bailter space vs this kind of punishment

thread of missing peter jefferies

and I kinda wanna hear some terminals now

Edward III, Friday, 19 December 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for the Verlaines, but it was a tough call. Also The Cakekitchen isn't on the list.

purrington, Friday, 19 December 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

ALISTAIR GALBRAITH GODDAMMIT

sleeve, Friday, 19 December 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

seriously inexcusable omission

sleeve, Friday, 19 December 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

O.K, O.K so maybe someone should do a more comprehensive list rather than my off the cuff thing. Feel bad about Peter Jefferies, Proud Scum, Cakekitchen Etc Etc..I sincerely apologise forever and ever Amen.

I left the Brunettes off cos I am a mean guy who is on a campaign to taint their legacy forever.

Hinklepicker, Friday, 19 December 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

Was gonna nom Shoes This High, if only for The Nose One, but see that GOTT PUNCH beat me II it (ha punch beat geddit). Anyway, yeah, great song.

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Friday, 19 December 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

Some worthy groups gone missing:

The Axemen's, "Three Virgins, Three Versions, Three Visions" is one of the greatest things ever. It's a two record set of messy, sprawling, and crudely recorded bedroom psych spazz right up there with anything by the Swell Maps. Re-issues are coming soon.

The Garbage and the Flowers combined free folk scrape, noise, drone, and over-heated guitar workouts into one fine racket. They often went from quiet, folky, campfire singalongs to full-bore noise assaults in the same song. Most excellent.

Trash were part of the expressway axis. Their lone CD gets that Kiwi Velvet Underground practice room vibe down perfectly. At their best, the band combined Velvet style drones with the crankiness of the Fall.

The Bilders, Vacuum, and everything Bill Direen deserve their own thread. Flying Nun re-issued most of their stuff in the early nineties. If you see any of it, snap it up. The Cd's are well worth investigating.

The Alpaca Brothers' EP has thumping almost funky bass anchoring a very nasty guitar squall. It's one of my favorite Flying Nun releases.

It amazes me how small places like Jamaica and New Zealand can produce so much good music.

leavethecapital, Friday, 19 December 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, I was just going to bitch about the Axemen not being there. Anyone know if the reissue of Virgins, etc. will be available on CD as well as vinyl? I never bothered to rip the whole thing, and now my stereo equipment is all packed away...

Of the people listed, it's going to be a tie (for me) between 3d's and LBGP.

dlp9001, Friday, 19 December 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

The Garbage and the Flowers

this may be a stupid question, but did they ever have a cd/lp release? i remember seeing what looked like a lathe cut 2lp by them a long time ago and i made the mistake of not buying it.

fakexp: i just checked discogs, looks like a cassette, a 7" and that double LP.

Manclusion (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 20 December 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

Hee, man, remember there was that other thread that was exactly the same, but with more stuff on it? Whatever happened to that?

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 December 2008 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

Yes there is another thread- see below- with most of the bands that people moaned about being left off on this one now included.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 20 December 2008 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

It was better in retrospect.

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 December 2008 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

trash had three cd's and then bruce blucher did that cyclops stuff too which wasn't very good actually but peter jefferies was drummer. the first trash record was best. in truth all you really need is the 'on and on with lou reed' seven inch though 'heaviest head' and 'drug stance no. 7' are kinda cool.

keythkeyth, Saturday, 20 December 2008 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

I guess I'm going with the Clean, but of course I only know a fraction of these bands. It's either them or Tall Dwarfs.

Someone tell me about Bailterspace.

when I wake up I see my self bearfooted (clotpoll), Saturday, 20 December 2008 06:59 (seventeen years ago)

bailterspace used to be the gordons, well once hamish kilgour left. they had two sides there was the slow, dreamy side and the more agitated noisy side. so you had incredibly beautiful tracks like 'x' and 'make' and more potent songs like 'projects', 'get lost' or 'we know'. they were amazing live. they peaked at 'vortura' and then for some reason they seemed to lose all traces of menace and became a bit dull really. first four records and the accompanying ep's are all worthwhile, maybe it was 'the aim' that was their high point.

keythkeyth, Saturday, 20 December 2008 07:12 (seventeen years ago)

cool thanks I'll check em out!

3d's!

Amenaza Elegante, Monday, 29 December 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for The Dead C.
With The Clean,The Axemen, The Puddle, Victor Dimisich Band, Scorched Earth Policy, The Renderers and 100 others a very close second.

brg30, Monday, 29 December 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

whatever happened to high dependency unit? not that they'd have a chance of winning, but good for a few good searing tunes. also, very very great at all tomorrow's parties in '02.
