Jose Feliciano and Bill Monroe should be on that list.

Yeah, but the Fendermen's version is the one: drum beats conjured out of two guitars, the only successful yodeling in a rock song.

Apart from The Girls from the Golden West singing Will There Be Any Yodeling in Heaven, of course? I can't vote in this, not having heard the options, but I did used to go crazy for Rambling Jack Eliot's Mule Skinner Blues and the yodel in that one.

1. Jimmie
2. Bill Monroe
3. Muleskinner (the progressive bluegrass band from the mid 70s.)

See Muleskinner's version: droning glam/bluegrass hybrid featuring Clarence White, David Grisman, Bill Keith, Richard Greene and vocalist Peter Rowan, who is a total badass when it comes to yodeling.

I always thought Roy acuff's was kind of the definitive grand ol opry hit version --- definitely more primary than any of these except jimmie---- and he sings the shit out of it

opryland rip :-(

STR8 FONKY HOMMIE (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 19 December 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

Ok so wikipedia suggests it was jimmie Rodgers hit and bill Monroe kinda revved it up for the opry stage -- roys is good though

I'm trying to figure out the tree of influences on MSB versions. Obviously, the Fendermen version is pivotal: The Cramps and José Feliciano versions are obviously version of the Fendermen's. But did the Fendermen crib off of Frankie Laine? I'm thinking that there's a pop/country split on this song that happened in the 50s: Jerry Reed, Merle, and Dolly being on the country side and post-Laine versions on the pop side. Also, where does Slint figure in here?
