Haha now I have to vote "Take a Bow" for real unless I can bring myself to vote for Calving Harris which I can't see happening. How did "No Air" not make number 1?

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

seriously, a "which is worst" poll would probably have been more apt, because this really is just an estelle v beyoncé two-horse race, w/maybe ne-yo as sleeper. then the lead single from the worst madonna album of her career is the 4th best here, and then 'take a bow' is...not intolerable, i guess? and then everything else is just fucking awful.

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

"Closer" goddamn

Usic of My Mind (The Reverend), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

Nah the Dizzee is upsettingly good and I don't get what you don't like about "Take a Bow"? It's her best single of this year for me, easy. The vocal is fire.

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:07 (seventeen years ago)

'no air' made no 3. did jordin come over here to promote it? it was pretty big.

(the worst is easily the ting tings btw. i have almost never felt quite that much hatred for a band before.)

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:07 (seventeen years ago)

Considering how much pleasure "American Boy" has given me I don't really need to hear it for at least 6 months.

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

Easily Coldplay

Geir Hongro, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

i don't dislike 'take a bow', it's just...there. it's kind of a blah melody, rescued by good lyrics & vocal performance, but it's pretty much the worst GGGB ballad.

'dance wiv me' is embarrassing, so cheesy, and calvin harris will never not be punchable.

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

"Basshunter ft. DJ Mental Theo's Bazzheadz - Now You're Gone"

Somehow I'm happy I don't listen to music much anymore. This has got to be a joke, right?
DJ Mental Theo? Dutch dude?

There's lots of good songs in it and a whole bunch of stinkers. I think I'll probably opt for Estelle.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:11 (seventeen years ago)

I like that Basshunter record Nath but I've been addled by years of gabba and whatever you call slow lumpen-gabba like this I guess. It's no "Jumpin' All Over the World", to be fair.

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

i think the best poll would've been "which uk #1 did lex enjoy most in hip-hop dance class"

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

im voting "closer" by the way by the length of the english channel

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

also i thought "wearing my rolex" went #1 >_<

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:15 (seventeen years ago)

which uk #1 did lex enjoy most in hip-hop dance class

prob Kid Rock

Usic of My Mind (The Reverend), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:15 (seventeen years ago)

i think the best poll would've been "which uk #1 did lex enjoy most in hip-hop dance class"

'american boy' out of a choice of two (the other being fucking 'mercy', which the teacher tried to play once but everyone literally stopped and refused to dance to it)

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:16 (seventeen years ago)

Hahaha Duffy Revolution

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:16 (seventeen years ago)

'wearing my rolex' and h2o ft platnum's 'what's it gonna be? are the two great lost No 2s of the year

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

I ended up lecturing my son over and over one night playing him the riff to "Werewolves of London" then the Kid Rock tune going "YOU SEE? YOU SEE? IT'S NOT LYNYRD BLEEDING SKYNYRD"

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

it was a weird hip-hop rmx of 'mercy' with a rapper on it :/

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

If that H20 joint had been number 1 I'd be voting it in a heartbeat.

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

haha i thought it was lynrd skynyrd

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

also, how did u guyz not get bit by kevin rudolf? that shit sounds EXACTLY like kasabian. maybe they aren't popular anymore i guess

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:19 (seventeen years ago)

I think it might be a micro-sample in there somewhere. I just hate the Kid Rock even more than I otherwise do because every time it came on there'd be a 2-second moment when I thought Wooooo "Werewolves of London".

Kasabian not popular "anymore"

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:20 (seventeen years ago)

kevin rudolf currently lurks ominously at no 73, and his PR is the most hassly person ever, so i assume that particular joy will be saved for 09 :(

'low' was another lost No 2 :(

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:21 (seventeen years ago)

Was really fun the whole family singing "Low" in the car this year. A lot.

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

idk i thought kasabian was big shit over there - in any event it sounds like some shit glastonbury ppl would dig. maybe im underestimating your country.

i kind of think "low" sucks. i hate the fuck out of flo rida as a rapper especially the way he emphasizes the "OOHHH" at the end of that one verse in "low"

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

My lit prof this spring randomly starting singing "Low" in class one day, cracking up everybody

Usic of My Mind (The Reverend), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

it's weird that "low" got "yeah" big - i guess since critics weren't talking about it as much it didn't feel as impactful

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:28 (seventeen years ago)

I've only actually knowingly heard one of these songs, and I managed to get the sound off on that in about 15 seconds. (The video accidentally came up on YouTube.)

From the comments on this thread, I'm thinking that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Ironic Erection (Masonic Boom), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:29 (seventeen years ago)

i have knowingly heard only one of these songs.

the next grozart, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

woah, i didn't read kate's message above me.

it's weird that "low" got "yeah" big - i guess since critics weren't talking about it as much it didn't feel as impactful

not that weird, it's super super catchy. it's not a critics' song but it is definitely a great party tune. i slightly preferred 'in the ayer' though - OH HOT DAMN. THIS IS MY JAM. KEEP ME PARTYING TO THE A.M.

(americans should click that h2o video btw, just to restore some semblance of pride to this country.)

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

That's the vid with the hilarious "Uptight School Teacher in a Mortarboard finally cracks and starts groovin'" storyline, right?

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

"Ghetto Techno" is a jam, all the other Flo Rida stuff I've heard is kind of middling

USICMAKEULOSECONTROL (The Reverend), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

i think that's the "dream sequence" :/ xp

'birthday' is a great flo rida track too. i think i've joined a fbook group called "i don't want no cake on my birthday, i want my cake err day, err day"

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

in the ayer (actual str8 up jam)>>>>elevator (mildly okay as far as a 2008 timbaland production goes)>>>low

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

the best flo rida thing of the year was his awesome hook on brisco/wayne's "just know that" which im too lazy to link to

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

thankfully no one respects dude as a rapper so he hasn't shown up on anyone else's songs or remixes

well that's true

here's that brisco, wayne, flo-rida song

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

1. Ne-Yo - Closer (by a mile)

2. Estelle ft. Kanye West - American Boy (I loved it when it came out but for some reason I've got a bit bored with it)

3. Duffy - Mercy (her vocal style is unconvincing to me but every time I hear this record I can't deny that I like it; it is an inconvenient fact that dodgy people occasionally make a very good record)

dubmill, Friday, 19 December 2008 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

Forgot to say I was semi-joking about Kasabian, Jordan. I guess they are still pretty popular with mid-20s to mid-30s people who mainly like classic Indie/Dadrock/usual 60s suspects stuff. Like you said, Glastonbury types I suppose. But those guys rarely make much of a dint on the singles chart, it's all about downloading or buying the albums with them.

silly votes will still be counted (Noodle Vague), Friday, 19 December 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

I just hate the Kid Rock even more than I otherwise do because every time it came on there'd be a 2-second moment when I thought Wooooo "Werewolves of London".

On a long car ride with my dad in September, I did this four times in an hour. (And every time, after I quickly changed the station because I figured out it was Kid Rock, my dad would say, 'why did you change that? I like that song,' and I had to explain that Kid Rock ruined Christmas.)

Manchego Bay (G00blar), Friday, 19 December 2008 10:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'm still not bored with that TingTings number one. Or the album.

(I know, I know)...

Whenever I hear "Mercy", it reminds me of the Specials' version of "Sock it to em, JB", and reminds me that I'd rather be listening to that.

Mark G, Friday, 19 December 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)

Voted Basshunter.

^likes fat girls (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

Would have voted for "Low" if it'd deservedly got to #1 though.

^likes fat girls (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

which is worst? dizzee or kings of leon or some true british interest shit like x factor finalists?

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

KoL is really midtable when it comes to this list, it's that bad.

^likes fat girls (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

Perry is probably the most aggravating, Dizzee ft Calvin is most "representative of what's wrong with this generation", Krock is probably objectively the worst.

^likes fat girls (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

ting tings easily the worst.

stuff like the x factor finalists thing isn't worth hating on really.

lex pretend, Friday, 19 December 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

Dizzee ft Calvin is most "representative of what's wrong with this generation

yeah otm - at least in the US we get jim jones remixing mgmt except no one cares

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:13 (seventeen years ago)

i cant even imagine what the US equivalent would be cuz we don't have a calvin harris type here - im sure that the rappers would be the clipse though

please don't stop the usic (J0rdan S.), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:15 (seventeen years ago)

Lex hating on the TingTings is like Geir loving on the Beatles.

Mark G, Friday, 19 December 2008 11:20 (seventeen years ago)

Easily Coldplay

Merry Christuomas (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

Not a bad year at all. 'American Boy' a strong contender, but ultimately disqualified for Estelle's lack of charisma. Between Dizzee and Ne-Yo I think - I'll stick with Dizzee as I was the only one to give him a shout in the NME poll

Ismael Klata, Friday, 19 December 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

Five of these have made my draft "Best Tracks of 2008" list, and two of them ("American Boy" and "If I Were A Boy") are in my Top Ten.

mike t-diva, Friday, 19 December 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

Basshunter ft. DJ Mental Theo - Now You're Gone, but really I only like the original vocal version (and vid w/Basshunter in a pedalo).

Enrique (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 December 2008 12:34 (seventeen years ago)

another basshunter vote here.

r|t|c, Friday, 19 December 2008 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

shouldnt everyone who breathlessly rode for all the psuedoeuro whiz khalifa/timbaland jawns also be voting basshunter btw?

r|t|c, Friday, 19 December 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

The Basshunter track is great. I am sleepy and have been drinking so I take no responsibility for my sudden desire to be informed of some weird scene in Belgium or The Netherlands or whatevs where the only stuff they play is poppy hard house versions of "I Kissed A Girl", "Womaniser", "I Don't Care" et. al.

I also like "If I Were A Boy", "Viva La Vida", "Closer" and "American Boy". I haven't knowingly heard "Run" but i liked Leona's "Better In Time". I hate Calvin Harris but curiously don't hate "Dance Wiv Me" as much as I expected to.

Tim F, Friday, 19 December 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

certainly when you stack it up next to the litany of aborted filth in the same vein that skepta and wiley et al tried this year then 'dance wiv me' (and its vid, maybe importantly) seems like pretty harmless fun.

sort of have a soft spot for the girls aloud song actually! the "promise i made, started to fade" bit is just hooky enough to keep me trying to figure out how the rest of the trademark odd shapeless song w/ bewildering keychange goes. also it is not really obnoxious enough for me to care, so i do.

can't really get with 'if i were a boy' on the radio, but i sit thru it without complaint on the telly.

r|t|c, Friday, 19 December 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)

although really that's kind of a cop-out diffusion on my part - it's just that compared to other stuffz on the radio it's too much like a big bright torch in my face from the ballad police.

r|t|c, Friday, 19 December 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

I sorta felt like the only R&B I liked this year waz ballads and slow stuff. That's not true but it felt that way.

Of course "Don't Stop The Music" = best wedding song ever.

Oh no I am at that age aren't I.

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

ting tings is one of only two songs i utterly, utterly despise from this year. i have no understanding of the mentality that leads someone to like that song.

Pleased to see Madonna getting nothing. Vile record.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

actually '4 minutes' is the most fun to dance to. beat so slamming it doesn't matter how lame madge is being.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

and "keep it up, keep it up, don't be a pri - madonna" might be the last great pop moment on a madonna record. treasure it!

it's not a great pop moment. it's anything but
