Um could just be me but aren't Flight of Conchords actually a joke? A funny joke but c'mon they should be in some other poll. Funniest band ever perhaps. Best use of bird in a band name.

Polls are hard.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 20 December 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

My vote goes to 3d's just cos of the amazing times I had at so many gigs and lound deranged parties over the years. Honourable mentions to Terminals, Axemen, Puddle and the mighty Clean.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 20 December 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

Shibad - fantastic!

I voted Shocking Pinks....twice. But where is the option for the Mutton Birds?

I'm voting Tall Dwarfs because I have heard them.

"I Like My Hogen-Mogen" (nickalicious), Saturday, 20 December 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

Has to be Split Enz.

moley, Sunday, 21 December 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

If a person is voting Split Enz - how many of these others have you heard? Or does that not matter.Maybe you should just qualify it or at least explain why - if you have only ever heard one NZ band...or maybe you should play your cards close to your chest. Just sayin.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:09 (seventeen years ago)

I have records by Axemen, Clean, CakeKitchen, 3ds, Straightjacket Fits, and Split Enz. I voted 3ds because I was listening to them recently and liked it. I should have been honest and voted Split Enz because they are one of the greatest one hit wonders ever.

james k polk, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:13 (seventeen years ago)

Yes! Another vote for the the mighty 3d's. One of the best gigs i have ever been to was Tall Dwarfs/3d's/Pavement. This was around the time of Slanted and Enchanted and Pavement were completely shambolic- on the verge of falling apart all night and seemed uutterly mysterious and brilliant.Gary handed out bannanas at the end after jumping from a headstand off the stage to wade through the crowd. Chris Knox ended Tall Dwarves set by putting his head through his keyboard thing and in between was the 3d's who were beyond incredible. A devastatingly loud sound doing playing these demented shanties. David Mitchell hunched over his guitar wrestling and torturing it, wringing out every gleeful note, with a strange and mad look on his face. They sound like a sugar high drunk.

It was good. I liked it.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:28 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Hinkle, was that at Warner's in Christchurch? If so, was there also. If not, was at a very similar gig. Was great.

paulhw, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 00:36 (seventeen years ago)

50 bands and yet no Split Enz.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 03:10 (seventeen years ago)

look harder you damned blind norwegian.

ian, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

I will now make an argument that I probably would have scoffed at in uni:

To be honest, I have never even heard of about 40 of these bands. Yes, I really like Split Enz, but given the pretty sizable volume of music that I have consumed by this point in my life, if I haven't even heard of them, then probably the best the band can hope for is one really good album (and even that seems fairly unlikely, since I tend to check out most things that get a lot of props).

So this is kind of a ridiculous poll. Split Enz are the obvious choice.

Maybe if it were titled "Best NZ Indie-Punk band most people have never heard of"...

For those of you voting for other bands, if there's something people should be checking out, feel free to point out what.

mitya, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

NO DAVE DOBBYN, NO CREDIBILITY

A bright pair of newcomers called BROS (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 30 December 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

How come OMC isn't on the list? Surely they're the best known NZ band of them all?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

I take it Split Enz is a New Zealand band but Crowded House isn't?

Ye Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

Kind of tricky - Finn is from NZ but Hester and Seymour are from Australia. Someone with more knowledge of band history could comment, but I have the sense they were based more out of Australia for most of their existence (as much as from anywhere).

mitya, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

I take it Split Enz is a New Zealand band but Crowded House isn't?

Neil Finn moved to Australia and formed the band with Australians Paul Hester and Nick Seymour. So they are more Australian than New Zealand, definitely.

Did see (and vote) Split Enz now though.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

I knew the other dudes are Australian but come on. It is Neil Finn Plus Some Other Dudes.

Ye Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

This panned out okay.

Still Pumice, Crude, Gordons, Toy Love, Peter Jeffries and Dimmer deserve more than no votes.

And Ruby Suns deserve far less than one.

milling through the grinder, grinding through the mill (S-), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

walta (wilter), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

This poll is not ridiculous. You are. Thses are objectively the best bands from Nz ever. Its been tested. By me. Thats why I called it favourite. Thse are mine- do your own poll of 50 if you disagree. If you want to vote for a Finn then vote for "every NZlders learnt cos they see it on tv every year and watch the finn gravy train telling them they were the "greatest ever band Split Enz."

I don't know what that means. I mean they were good and all but there is more to life than zany prog pop and endless beatles pastiche.

"pretty sizable volume of music that I have consumed by this point in my life, if I haven't even heard of them, then probably the best the band can hope for is one really good album (and even that seems fairly unlikely, since I tend to check out most things that get a lot of props)." ...oh brother....by the way just cos you havent heard them doesnt mean they don't make a sound in the forest.

I don't understand what that means.

Hinklepicker, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 06:15 (seventeen years ago)

"pretty sizable volume of music that I have consumed by this point in my life, if I haven't even heard of them, then probably the best the band can hope for is one really good album"

xD

Thses are objectively the best bands from NZ ever. Its been tested. By me.

Dude, that's not a poll, that's a list. But whatever.

My point was just that I listen to a lot of music and have for many years (and I'm not some 21-year-old saying that). At this point if I haven't even heard that a band exist(ed), then the idea that they are somehow "better" than Split Enz, Chills, Clean, Verlaines, Tall Dwarfs is hard to take seriously. It doesn't mean that that they don't have a song/album out there that someone isn't passionate about.

That said, I've never heard of Birchville Cat Motel and here they are winning.

what the hell happened here?

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Birchville Cat Motel are great but Mitya won't like the drone.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

Birchville Cat Motel's army has defeated the rest. Who Knew? Is there anyone prepared to defend this decision ahead of the others? I would have thought The Clean, Chills etc etc or even the dreaded Spilt Hens. Obviously Campbell Kneale big American crossover smash "How really gratingly strange" has done the trick.

Hinklepicker, Thursday, 1 January 2009 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

None of the others get on the metal thread?

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 January 2009 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

I forgot to vote for the Axemen. Damn!

dlp9001, Thursday, 1 January 2009 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand. Did someone pay people to vote for Birchville Cat Motel? And who the fuck is this band? And how could they outdo the Chills? I'm bitter.

With Oatmeal Sauce (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 1 January 2009 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

"Dude, that's not a poll, that's a list. But whatever."

My mistake. Here I was thinking that a poll was a list of things for people to vote on. Don't go telling Fireman what they are sliding on anytime soon. Boy will they be embarrassed.

Hinklepicker, Thursday, 1 January 2009 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

Here is another poll i did that may help to jog peoples memory. Controversy abounds.

No votes for Proud Scum :( But then I voted the Clean.

There's so much greatness out of NZ but, really, Birchville Cat Motel, that's just a put on, right?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 16 August 2009 03:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah well you only needed nine friends or different aliases. thats the world of polling for you. a different day a different result. its all about the discussion and between this and the other nz poll thread there was at least some even if it was the traditional split enz/crowded house v stinky f.nun model.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 16 August 2009 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

"Stinky" Flying Nun?

I love that smell.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 16 August 2009 13:19 (sixteen years ago)

Birchville Cat Motel are really fantastic!! Though I would've expected more fans of BCM to prefer the Dead C.

Fetchboy, Sunday, 16 August 2009 13:54 (sixteen years ago)

Stinky is what all the people who don't get F.Nun think that F.Nun is. I love it myself- just giving one of the traditional dichotomies in NZ. There are other of these dichotomies. How do you spell dichotomy in the plural?
What is a plural?
Where am I?
