Max Roach's M'Boom! The studio debut and especially the Live at S.O.B's if you can find it.

Also Milford Graves' records on Tzadik and any recordings of Japanese Taiko groups or the drummers of Burundi.

Jordan, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree whole-heartedly with the Max Roach pick, though my favourite would be Percussion BitterSweet.

cuba libre (nathalie), Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Gerry Hemingway's _Tubworks_. And there have to be some appropriate Quintron recordings, too...

Andrew L, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Tehcnically, all solo piano works right? ;-p

phil, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Technically... but not quite what I had in mind. Yes, it could be argued that it's possible to play any old instrument as percussion if we open up the defintion. Arto Lindsay's guitar work, for example, seems to have more to do with percussion than with what one might normally associate with the guitar. But I was really looking for works on drums and other instruments traditionally considered percussion.

These A Certain Ratio cuts are mostly just percussion, some wordless voice too: Blown Away, Sesamo Apriti - Corco Vada.

Millard Clark's recordings of Native American drumming make your skull feel like a loudspeaker.

The Esso Trinidad Steel Band - s/t (produced by Van Dyke Parks, released in 1971)

Bizarre steel drum originals and takes on timely standards.

Thanks, people, this is ace! Just come back from Tower where I spent a good half hour checking out Milford Graves and Max Roach on the (dodgy) listening post. Mindblowing. I'll get around to listening to today's suggestions very soon. Ta! Keep 'em coming.

Music for Bang Bar-ooooooom and Harp by Dick Schory

A few years ago I saw a copy of this on the wall at (Saturn?) Records for $100, so I returned with my copy and they gave me $40 for it, terrific considering I got it for like a buck. The music really isn't great, but the album cover is pretty good. I actually own some percussion-only albums but don't make me try and remember what they are now; I've had a rough day.

Love the doorstopper stick. It reminds me of the Man Forever piece that involves two drummers playing on a single-stroke roll on the same head for 20+ minutes:

giraffe, Thursday, 5 January 2023 10:09 (two years ago)

one year passes...

Been listening a lot to the Drums Off Chaos EPs that Jaki Leibezeit was involved in, more of a modern percussion ensemble approach but the recordings are really banging.

Also very excited for this record -- a percussion ensemble led by Binkbeats recorded sample material for some great producers and drummer/composers, then it was passed back for a few rounds of recording and shaping.

Assuming you count the berimbau as a percussion instrument (it has a string), Nana Vasconcelos's Africadeus belongs here. Incredible record.
