ok, i have _aquemini_ now. haven't heard the other three yet. and it's decent. but it's still got nothing on _still standing_ for me. outkast's production may be fuller but goodie mob seem much stronger in terms of how they use their voices. their intricate rhythms flow just perfectly for the songs and they seem subtler in the interplay of the tones of their voices. i even sometimes feel like outkast are spitting the lines out quick to be flashy. the more minimal production works to gm's advantage: a hook to set a mood and a beat they can play against is all needed for their songs. the production of _aquemini_ still hasn't totally clicked in the same way for me. while _aquemini_ *may* (and that's a may) be stronger than _world party_ i still don't understand why outkast is getting all the press.

Outkast all the way. They're getting all the press simply because they are better, wilder, more beautiful, spaced out, imaginative than any other rap-act in some years. Anyway the last album is light-years ahead of Aquemini, I think.

It is. As Reynolds notes, much of Aquemini is boringly "live"- sounding by comparison.

However I've hardly heard the Goodie Mob so really can't comment.

Obviously OutKast are going to win because no one's heard any Goodie Mob. I'm the same but I will say that I'll be listening to some Goodie Mob soon because I like what I've heard so far. Personally I think I'll prefer "Aquemini" (and, for that matter, "ATLiens") to "Stankonia" in the long-run. I've already stopped listening to "Stankonia" as much as the other two.

Stankonia makes me tireder. Would it have really been that hard to put out a shorter album? (Aquemini's pretty long too but I'm more used to it, and more importantly, I think it's paced and sequenced a little better.)

Dirty south top 5:

1. Outkast: ATLiens

2. Outkast: Aquemini

3. Goodie Mob: World Party

4. Outkast: Stankonia

5. Goodie Mob: Soul Food

I spent last year and the year before listening to those five and Southernplayalisticadillacmusic as much as anything. All of them except Stankonia still get played fairly regularly (what Stankonia gained in innovation, it sacrificed in durability). Still Standing sounds to me like it shouldn't have even been released. The choruses are even worse than those on Stankonia, and the whole album sounds like a demo to me. Even "Black Ice" and "Fly Away" would stand out as awful amongst Soul Food's first six songs.

I can see the case for "Still Standing" over "Aquemini", but "Stankonia" blows Goodie Mob and just about every other current rap act out of the water. The production is brilliant - I remember how impressed I was with "Aquemini" when I bought it, but "Stankonia" makes that album sound tired and muddled. "Stankonia" *is* long as hell and, yeah, the sequencing doesn't do what it could to make it easier, but I find that listening to just half of it at once like a double LP is a lot more manageable.

I agree with Otis, "Still Standing" sounds half finished and terrible and is nowhere near as good as any given Outkast album. GM's "Chain Swang" is probably my favorite song by either group, and Cee Lo might be the most charismatic rapper alive (I moshed with him at a Goodie Mob show years back while their band was riffing on "Iron Man"). I think Outkast makes better albums, and Goodie Mob made at least one better single, but isn't all that consistent. "Atliens" is the best album by either group, with either "Southernplaya..." or "Soul Food" second. I actually haven't heard much of "World Party" except for "Get Rich to This" and "Chain Swang".

id go with goodie mob, i think they have better beats and more captivating rhymes. they have some songs like straight up sit you down and make you think (guess who, soul food) and songs that make you all out jam (just about over, still standing). thats my 2 cents

Those of you who have negatively critized all these albums have not taken the time to listen to the lyrics. Yes, Stankonia does seem long but all the interludes actully introduce the album. I personally love Still Standing and also have a tattoo of the those words with a cross instead of the tree with the roots. Still Standing is better than Aquemini, but can't be compared to ATLiens or Stankonia because of the futuristic rhymes and flows that travel on those albums. Sit & listen to the albums & if the lyrics are too fast read the album cover for a better understanding.

all these artists are great in there own way but if i got to choose sides i would go with Outkast b/c they put this shit on the map opening it all up for Goodie Mobb, Slim Calhoun, Backone, Ludacris etc.

All of this is legit music criticism in one way or another, but shit, I dunno, not many a' yall seem like you really get OutKast or Goodie Mobb or what they're about. Maybe (and its a fuckin strong maybe) their music is so tied to the South'un way of life and a certain brand of free-thinking that to those who dont get these things, they seem like run-of-the-mill hip hop albums that you can say are too long or get dull (ATLiens dull? aww haaaaaail naw! wheels of steel? elevators? two dope boys? decatur psalm? since when did an album make you enter the artist's heads and eyes like fuckin ATLiens?). i mean, OutKasts skits r fuckin brilliant. they take u directly to the culture but not in a stupid tell-a-everyday-story sorta way, they analyze and bust on all the characters and situations like the street scholars they r. and Goodie Mobb just straight up sees the world how it is, only not in a easy ghetto way, they see the long-view, power vs. the people, "cell therapy" was a political document and a great song at the same time. the beats are the funkiest and most musically interesting in hip-hop by far, and kick the shit out of their closest contenders, the now played-out New York jazz beats of semi/underground. and the flows? big boi, gipp and cee lo are poets of the top level in hip hop history, theyre not fast to be flashy, theyre fast cuz they have mastered rhyme and meter and are takin MCing to a whole notha level (which it needs to go to, since shitty MCs and talk-over-a-beaters have taken over the music). basically, atlanta hip hop from this crew (DF in general) is too complicated and artistically genius for most same-old-New York-shit hip hop fans, who havent gotten past unoriginal bragging and telling tired old vague slangin' stories wiht no specifics, givin the impression they hadn't sold a sack in their life. its like 2pac taken to the next level without gettin as hung up on the thug life bullshit and stickin to the thug life reality. and aint no shit betta nowhere dan in da muthafuckin Dirty South

You know, I almost don't even bother to draw any distinctions between the various Dungeon Family projects - there's so much overlap both in who is actually on the records and in the culture/viewpoints their promoting that I like to think of them as one big, organic, endlessly evolving clan (like P-Funk back in the day). I guess I could rate certain albums above others ("Aquemini" is better than "Still Standing" for example, I'm surprised at all the love "Still Standing" is getting in this thread) but as performers I love almost all the major players equally, albeit for different reasons. I felt the same way about Wu-Tang for a long time, before the flood of bad solo albums started to dilute their reputation.

Personally, I think Goodie Mob and Outkast are two of the freshest hip-hop acts around right now. I've been especially into Cee-Lo's album lately, but all three Goodie Mob albums and all four(?) Outkast albums are ALL classics in my humble opinion.

I wasn't expecting anything massive from it given the ostensible side-project/large-scale collaboration aspect of it, but it's easily as strong as the best stuff in the Outkast/Goodie Mob/Organized Noize catalog. "Crooked Booty" is jaw-dropping - and the Tomita loop in "White Gutz"! Fucking great. Of the DF's releases over the last year, I like Cee-Lo's solo album but this is a few steps ahead of it, I think.

OutKast, simply because they''ve stayed more committed to the music, but don't count the Mob out; They are definatly one of the most underrated groups in Hip Hop. Soul Food was damn incredible and Still Standing even more so, perhaps. Both Kast and Goodie have really balanced their artistic sides with the need to bring in a basic audience, but I think Goodie, simply becuase they have a much more raw, soulfood sound, has struggled to get the attention that Kast recieves. Whats happened to Goodie Mob lately? I think they are trying to break into the popular charts, perhaps. World Party, while it was an alright album came as a complete suprise; definatly not the type of soulful crunk style the fan base expected. And for better or worse, Khujo's new album is definatly a step from the old skool goodie sound. Given Goodies frustration to stay together as a group and the constantly changing styles of Outkast, I think, in general, now would be a good time for Second Genoration Dungeon Family to really put themselves out in the oublic eye without sacrificing their raw style.

Big Gipp's solo album is fun. The "Steppin' Out" single with the "Billie Jean" guitar and "got myself some cologne that I'm 'a skeet skeet skeet skeet skeet skeet on" is great, too. I looooooooove me some classic Outkast. Aquemini to me was their crowning achievement, but I also love Southernplayalistic, ATLiens, and yes even Stankonia.

Was not a fan of Speakerboxx/The Love Below (didn't think Andre 3000 pulled his album off at all, wasn't horrible but wasn't great, and Speakerboxx is just flat other than "Church" and a few other songs).

But I really did like the album they put out last year--Idlewild was a nice mix of the things they were doing on Speakerboxx/Love Below but not too excessive.

so...believe it or not though I've not heard much Goodie Mob outside of their OUtkast guests (which I liked). someone recc me some.

I keep thinking about what Steve Harvey said in Original Kings of Comedy about everybody on the stage having a mic ("40 MOTHERFUCKING PEOPLE!") and how nobody can understand what anybody is saying ("SIGAMUMAWAMAMAKIA! SIGAMUAMA YEA YEA YEA BOY!").

i saw Goodie Mob on Apollo once (hosted by ....Steve Harvey!) and they all had mics and it was just one of the funniest things I ever saw cuz none of it was intelligible. I think whoever was doing the sound was high that night.

woke up this morning from a dream where i was doing some very important mystical rite involving climbing a tree and Goodie Mob were there and "Black Ice" was playing. Of course "Black Ice" had different lyrics and maybe a different beat in my dream but it was "Black Ice."
