DO WANT!

The book looks spectacular. Essential collection i'd say.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 22 December 2008 06:55 (seventeen years ago)

haven't listened yet but it looks to be evenly split with obvious picks and tracks i don't know which i guess is standard for sj. the book is by the same author who put together the king jammy's book so imagine it would be pretty good.

they picked a good (and relatively rare) cutty ranks track so that's nice

eman, Monday, 22 December 2008 07:02 (seventeen years ago)

just skipped through, its a really good selection. only exception being 'murder she wrote' which is maybe a little too late or on the cusp for this comp. good song but its clean sound stands out too much

WANT

The Reverend, Monday, 22 December 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

This looks like a must-buy. Glad to see Pinchers on there - love the guy's voice, been wanting to start a thread on him for a while but figure there'll be about 3 posts. Just from scanning that list I'm fine with "Murder She Wrote", the Bam Bam Riddim definitely belongs on the comp. Somebody like Ini Kamoze or even Junior Murvin seems like more of a left-field pick than Chaka and Pliers.

Official Best Band Ever Poll Moderator (Noodle Vague), Monday, 22 December 2008 09:04 (seventeen years ago)

those tracks both fit. the junior murvin is some oddball 80s digital track and the ini kamoze is the rhythm made popular by 'welcome to jamrock'. seriously murder she wrote just sounds like a different era than the rest of it, although i guess its inclusion might get newbies to buy it

eman, Monday, 22 December 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

putting it at the end would have been nice because the flow of the mix overall is excellent

btw the lady ann track <3

eman, Monday, 22 December 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

of the ones that were new to me this might be my fave

eman, Monday, 22 December 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

i would really not hate this for a chanukah present

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

Why does there have to be so much Jamaican music that I want?

ichard Thompson (Hurting 2), Monday, 22 December 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

i didn't know welcome to jamrock was such a beatjack btw

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, it's really too much. The vocal on Welcome to Jamrock itself is pretty uninspired too, imho.

ichard Thompson (Hurting 2), Monday, 22 December 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

not really a beatjack imo, world jam was just a throwback rhythm

eman, Monday, 22 December 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

eman, Monday, 22 December 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i get that, i was just surprised because the beat sounds pretty modern to me (esp that huge bass).

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

I wish they would cut down on the obvious tracks (do I really need "Here I Come" on every nth thing they put out) but there is enough gold on here that even I can't complain too much. Book looks amazing.

Alex in SF, Monday, 22 December 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

"Yeah, it's really too much. The vocal on Welcome to Jamrock itself is pretty uninspired too, imho."

Crazy-talk.

Alex in SF, Monday, 22 December 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i can't back you up on that, sorry hurting.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

yah wtf

The Reverend, Monday, 22 December 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i get that, i was just surprised because the beat sounds pretty modern to me (esp that huge bass).

― Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, December 22, 2008 11:55 AM

right, the original does sound a little different, more trebly. i guess they re-recorded the whole thing.

eman, Monday, 22 December 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

orig is sly n robbie production, no?

expletive for lady parts (Granny Dainger), Monday, 22 December 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

nice

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

that's still some pretty serious bass though

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

"orig is sly n robbie production, no?"

Yup.

Alex in SF, Monday, 22 December 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

hey can you dudes recommend some sly & robbie joints, either solo or producing for others -- i have taxi fare or cab fare or whatever the one w/ "baltimore" is called, ive also got that gregory isaacs 'beach party' lp and the padlock ep ... what else is must-hear? i think ive got some other stuff but im in the airport right now and its not coming to me at the moment

K DEF FROM REAL LIVE (deej), Monday, 22 December 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

about to head home, but quickly: Isaacs' Mr. Isaacs (Blood and Fire re-issue) and Soon Forward are both must haves.

expletive for lady parts (Granny Dainger), Monday, 22 December 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

I like Sly & Robbie on Black Uhuru's Red. Saw them with Black Uhuru that year (81?) at Howard U. What a show.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)

Nice to see Lone Ranger's M16 on here, I always thought that one didn't get enough play.

Brio, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

'chop chop' and 'murder she wrote' are both sly & robbie

eman, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 05:11 (seventeen years ago)

deej get their Reggae Greats Dub collection--ignore the genero cover. Also Grace Jones stuff is must have. Red is awesome as is Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. Gregory Isaacs galore. The Auralux collection is a good starting point as is the Pressure Sounds one (there is some overlap.) Taxi DJ Link? I think has some more recent-ish stuff.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 05:16 (seventeen years ago)

I have this -- everything on it is good.

herbman hustling is good taxi track (lol @ retarded video)

eman, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 06:22 (seventeen years ago)

badass riddim:

ichard Thompson (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 06:44 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man I've got that riddim ^^^ on the Trojan Eighties comp, one of the tracks on the Dancehall CD that I can't remember at the moment or be bothered to run downstairs and check. Sticks in the head all day, anyway.

Official Best Band Ever Poll Moderator (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 10:37 (seventeen years ago)

Bloodfire Posse's awesome "Rub-A-Dub Soldier" is on that riddim (not the Sly & Robbie version though).

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

i would be happy to want this.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

eman, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

s1ocki, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)
