Actually, in context, I find I'm leaning towards DP: on their day, they were a tight, good-time, garage-rocking outfit, who paved the way for Thin Lizzy, Priest and the NWOBHM bands.

Soukesian, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

I foresee Led Zeppelin completely defeated at the end of this thread. If only the world resembled ilx a bit more. Should've thrown Pink Floyd in there while we're burning the building down but wanted to keep the fight between the three grand UK heavy metal influences.

Moka, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

Zep.

WmC, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

Zep deservedly beat Sabbath in previous polls - I like Deep Purple as much as the next guy but come on, not even in the same league as the other two.

There was even a brief period when I preferred Sally Forth. (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not a fan of deep purple myself but I've seen them pushing sabbath and zep against the wall every now and then in some metal forums.

Moka, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

'I didn't believe she was devil's sperm.
She said, "Curse you all, you'll never learn!
When I leave there's no return."'

THERE'S NO RETURN! Despite Sabbath's Gothic majesty, despite Zep's incoherent despoiling of the Yardbird's legacy, you can't deny THE DEVIL'S SPERM!

Soukesian, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

the Yardbirds fucking sucked, sorry

Even so, Sir - will you deny THE DEVIL'S SPERM!

Soukesian, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

Glover vs. Jones vs. Geezer

WINNER: TIE between Glover (way more aggressive) and Jones (better player + better production). I wish Geezer was recorded better than the rustic sound he has on album.

Paice vs. Bonham vs. Ward

WINNER: Bonham. Paice is a heck of a player though and Bill Ward is the perfect drummer for Sabbath.

Blackmore vs. Page vs. Iommi

WINNER: Iommi. Not even a fair fight.

Sabbath. Agree that the only thing wrong with this poll is Deep Purple. Except Space Truckin, but that's a given.

If the poll was II vs Machine Head vs Paranoid, that would be a poll.

No, that would be Paranoid.

I think this could be an interesting thread, the only one of your choices I didn't disagree on was on Bonham. He's by far the best musician on Led Zeppelin.

Zep. They're not always absolute fucking crap like the other two.

rjberry, Friday, 2 January 2009 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

I just heard "After Forever" the other day, for the first time, and I can't fucking believe it exists! It's got such great, zippy, Thin Lizzy-esque riffs and wtf, everyone knows this is the wtf that's coming: "They should realize before they criticize that God is the only way to love."

The In Rock/Fireball/Machine Head line-up of Deep Purple would be generally considered to be in the same league as the other two if they'd managed to keep that line-up together and had a decade-long career or something. Same applies to the Rising-era version of Rainbow. Blackmore could sure be his own worst enemy at times.

...so music and chicken have become intertwined (Turrican), Thursday, 6 April 2017 22:21 (eight years ago)

yeah otm on both counts, those particular eras of both those bands can hang with any hard rock ever. feel like Blackmore was so difficult and egocentric he could last with people who were his equal

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 April 2017 00:05 (eight years ago)

Have we done zeppelin vs Floyd?

calstars, Friday, 7 April 2017 01:04 (eight years ago)

Deep Purple doesn't have a single front-to-back great album. They never had more than two or three really good songs per album, and their lyrics were awful. The best songs from that 1970-73 lineup are fantastic, but IMO they only add up to one full album, stretched across four.

Neanderthal, Friday, 7 April 2017 01:19 (eight years ago)

I disagree, I think In Rock and Machine Head in particular are front-to-back great.

I've had both Rising and Long Live Rock'n'Roll on today and I'd take both over In Through the Out Door, and if Presence didn't have 'Achilles Last Stand' on it, I'd take both over Presence too.

You just can't fuck with tracks like 'Stargazer' and 'Gates of Babylon' ... prime hard rock.

...so music and chicken have become intertwined (Turrican), Friday, 7 April 2017 01:20 (eight years ago)

Machine Head is dope

Neanderthal, Friday, 7 April 2017 01:21 (eight years ago)

The production of Machine Head is OTM, too. It sounds fucking great!

...so music and chicken have become intertwined (Turrican), Friday, 7 April 2017 01:23 (eight years ago)

Rainbow >>> Deep Purple

Οὖτις, Friday, 7 April 2017 02:21 (eight years ago)

If we're talking about their respective Blackmore-lineups

Οὖτις, Friday, 7 April 2017 02:22 (eight years ago)

Oh yeah, I think the Rising-era Rainbow line-up was the best band Blackmore has ever been in in terms of both musical proficiency and their ability to rock fucking hard. Whenever I've read up on the history of Rainbow, I always react to Blackmore firing someone by thinking "why did you do that, you dick?" ... Great guitarist, but supremely awful at recognising a good thing when he had it.

...so music and chicken have become intertwined (Turrican), Friday, 7 April 2017 18:21 (eight years ago)

(I can't listen to anything Rainbow did after Long Live Rock'n'Roll, though... 'Since You've Been Gone' and 'I Surrender' can fuck right off, IMO)

...so music and chicken have become intertwined (Turrican), Friday, 7 April 2017 18:27 (eight years ago)

two years pass...

Deep Purple doesn't have a single front-to-back great album.

A somewhat fair assessment, but I'm beginning to think that this is equally true of Zep.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 09:40 (six years ago)

that's true, LZ has at least three (Houses of the Holy, III and IV)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 16:17 (six years ago)

As far as III and IV are concerned, I can't say I much care for 'Out on the Tiles' and 'Four Sticks' in particular.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 16:22 (six years ago)

crazy talk - Out on the Tiles is a monster riff

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 16:26 (six years ago)

I used to dislike "Four Sticks" and then I Got It, after my Presence epiphany.

― Οὖτις, Tuesday, July 16, 2019 11:26 AM (two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

yeah and they totally blow it with the weakest fucking dumb chorus in the history of anticlimactic choruses

like, you're going to come swinging with a HUGE riff like that and just shrug and absolutely waste it and talk about "all your love" and shit ? fuck you so hard

budo jeru, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 16:31 (six years ago)

also for a double album full of b-sides everything on physical graffiti sure is great

pomenitul, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 17:03 (six years ago)

?! something is wrong with your ears methinks

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 17:03 (six years ago)

sure the lyrical sentiment is fairly execrable but JPJ and Bonham both really bring what they do best to that track

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 17:04 (six years ago)

xp

lz1 is definitely a huge sonic leap forward

i sometimes think of all rock as being either pre- or post-lz1, just in terms of sound / production / dynamics / heaviness

budo jeru, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 17:05 (six years ago)

Failed chorus, once again – perhaps the blueprint for all those that followed.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 18:19 (six years ago)

pomenitul, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 18:22 (six years ago)

I've just never cottoned to his "my organ sounds like an electric guitar!" thing as being a good idea, it's fairly boring to my ears.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 18:23 (six years ago)

love Blackmore though

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 18:23 (six years ago)

I just mean if you’re a fan of Deep Purple, I can’t find a flaw there

Some songs overshadow the others but there's no true dud among them.
