I voted "Totally Wired", but I'm thinking that "Fiery Jack" might be the one this time around.

Kicker Conspiracy/Wings/Container Drivers/New Puritan

Totally Wired/Putta Block. Both the best song, therefore wins.

Went for Kicker/Wings/Container Drivers/New Puritan as I love Wings and prefer the Peel Sessions versions of Container Drivers and New Puritan to other releases of those tracks. (plus 2x7"=Extra Fall goodness) I prefer the b sides to so many of these releases, especially Second Dark Age, various Times and Putta Block.

The live versions of Fiery Jack on both Totale's Turns and The legendary Chaos Tape are better than the, already great, single version.

Oh fuck. Ludd Gang is amazing too. Possibly Steve Hanley's best bassline ever.

'In My Area' I think I first heard last week. Seems to be catching them at the exact moment before they give up on, you know, structure, arrangement, playing their instruments: n.b. I love the two-chords-for-ten-minutes Fall the most but replaying Witch Trials + assoc. singles lately has reminded me how remarkable they were out the door (uh eight years before I was born), when they had middle eights and Smith's diction wasn't so bloody-mindedly unpoetic. No, it was to "Fiery Jack", which I had on a John Peel Show tape (still got it), which had the "Totale's Turns" version on it, but the single was sold out.

Eventually went alllllll the way to Rough Trade records to get one.

... that said, those songs have kind of overloved A-sides for what they are and so I am voting for Lie Dream / Fantastic Life, which are both fucking fantastic.

I've been going round saying 'HELD IN HIS HANDS, TWO LAGER CANS' to myself, for the last couple of days, but it's for New Puritan and Wings as much as anything else. New Puritan is just something else. And that session version of Container Drivers is just great.

but really almost all of these singles are totally perfect. is "wings" the best guitar riff ever?

I went with Bingo's as a tribute to "Repetition". How cool was it that on the very first record, M.E.S. made a statement about what their music was going to be like for so many years to come. No Fall fan in this world should remain unaware of that song.
