Didn't we already do this?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

We did, it was just longer:

They Call Me... Fall Singles Poll!

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

I voted "Totally Wired", but I'm thinking that "Fiery Jack" might be the one this time around.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

Kicker Conspiracy/Wings/Container Drivers/New Puritan

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

Totally Wired/Putta Block. Both the best song, therefore wins.

Bored American Aerospace Defense Command (BORAD) (contenderizer), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

Went for Kicker/Wings/Container Drivers/New Puritan as I love Wings and prefer the Peel Sessions versions of Container Drivers and New Puritan to other releases of those tracks. (plus 2x7"=Extra Fall goodness) I prefer the b sides to so many of these releases, especially Second Dark Age, various Times and Putta Block.

The live versions of Fiery Jack on both Totale's Turns and The legendary Chaos Tape are better than the, already great, single version.

Oh fuck. Ludd Gang is amazing too. Possibly Steve Hanley's best bassline ever.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

I started with Elastic Man.

Went back in time... time... time...

etc.

So, Wings then?

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

CARVE A HOLE IN THE RAIN FOR YER—one of my favorite bits of unprocessed Smithspeak, I think. Such a weird declaration of commitment, in a hole in the middle of a song whose narrator seems to be identifying himself as such a Luddite

'In My Area' I think I first heard last week. Seems to be catching them at the exact moment before they give up on, you know, structure, arrangement, playing their instruments: n.b. I love the two-chords-for-ten-minutes Fall the most but replaying Witch Trials + assoc. singles lately has reminded me how remarkable they were out the door (uh eight years before I was born), when they had middle eights and Smith's diction wasn't so bloody-mindedly unpoetic. "The dwarf plays pool to prove his height"

thomp, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:44 (seventeen years ago)

ha, yeah. (xpost)

No, it was to "Fiery Jack", which I had on a John Peel Show tape (still got it), which had the "Totale's Turns" version on it, but the single was sold out.

Eventually went alllllll the way to Rough Trade records to get one.

Mark G, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:44 (seventeen years ago)

... that said, those songs have kind of overloved A-sides for what they are and so I am voting for Lie Dream / Fantastic Life, which are both fucking fantastic.

thomp, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

oh look: ALL OF THEM!!! Yum.

Mark G, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

What Mark G said. But also Kicker, Kicker Conspiracy. I've been going round saying 'HELD IN HIS HANDS, TWO LAGER CANS' to myself, for the last couple of days, but it's for New Puritan and Wings as much as anything else. New Puritan is just something else. And that session version of Container Drivers is just great.

GamalielRatsey, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

Remember!ed my expense account, but really The Man Whose Head Expanded should take it...

I actually remember that article that last verse there was based on.

The Man Whose Head Expanded!

zeus, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

Except for the first 3, these are all too good to choose between. I'll settle for How I wrote Plastic Man.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

Bingo master's and Psycho mafia are among my favourite Fall songs, so that

Zeno, Thursday, 25 December 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

I find this a harder poll than the recent album ones. In fact, I may have to abstain. I have a special affection for New Puritan, but Various Times is my fave Fall song and goddamn Repetition is essential Fall.

Geese Is The Word (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 25 December 2008 05:01 (seventeen years ago)

A-Rowche A-Rumble

nerve_pylon, Thursday, 25 December 2008 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

I also love psychomafia, but i'm going on A sides here. A B sides poll would be a tough enough competition: I'm into CB, Fantastic Life.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 25 December 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

this is too hard, I choose yes, please.

perhaps "It's the New Thing" b/w "Various Times"

cause those two are perfect and I doubt they'll get many votes. and it's the second single, proving the first was no one-off, and that the fall repeat, repeat, repeat.

but really almost all of these singles are totally perfect. is "wings" the best guitar riff ever?

noxmasforjohnkeats (ryanch), Thursday, 25 December 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

"Various Times" was the first song where i 'got' the lyrics, so voting for that

zappi, Thursday, 25 December 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

rowche rumble/in my area

ian, Thursday, 25 December 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

I went with Bingo's as a tribute to "Repetition". How cool was it that on the very first record, M.E.S. made a statement about what their music was going to be like for so many years to come. No Fall fan in this world should remain unaware of that song.

Geese Is The Word (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 26 December 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

I hate the guts of Shakin' Stevens
For what we has done:
The massacre of Blue Christmas.
On him I'd like to land one on.

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Friday, 26 December 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 9 January 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

I was thinking about this poll just last night and wondering when it was due to end. Can we not wait this long in the future to make our polls end? Especially since we don't always name our polls things that can be easily found in the search engine. Thanks.

gods jangle the key change (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 9 January 2009 08:07 (seventeen years ago)

sorry Bimble you're right after about three or four days these polls generally drop off the board...my bad.

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Friday, 9 January 2009 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Saturday, 10 January 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know why, but I had a feeling Kicker Conspiracy would win. Of course, I guess it helps that Wings is on that, which seems to be a fave for many people.

Sorry if I sounded cranky about the poll end date, Stephen. Work has been driving me batshit with stress lately and it shouldn't be taken as anything more than a polite suggestion.

gods jangle the key change (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Saturday, 10 January 2009 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

no problem Bimble I know abt shitty work scenarios but my name is n--WAIT, RON ASHETON DIED?!!!!!!!

WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?!?!?!?!

Pepper needs new shorts! (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 10 January 2009 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

funny thing is the 2 songs that got the least votes are fantastic singles, both A and B sides.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Saturday, 10 January 2009 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

no joke...lie dream is my #3 vote on here me-thinks...

Test Tube Teens from the Year 1754 (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 10 January 2009 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

George, I'm sorry for the confusion. Wasn't due to me being drunk, either. I wrote you an email. Look for it.

gods jangle the key change (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Sunday, 11 January 2009 04:26 (seventeen years ago)

really? cool! i'll read it tonite...

Test Tube Teens from the Year 1754 (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 11 January 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

how the fuck did I miss this poll?!

Millsner, Sunday, 11 January 2009 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

Uh? How did It's The New Thing finish ahead of Lie Dream? It's the weakest single here. My guess is people went for Various Times.
