Worst Compilation Ever?

I've just been watching TV, and there was an advert for: "SONGWRITER: Real songs by real songwriters. Bob Dylan, Badly Drawn Boy, James Taylor, Elton John, Paul Weller, and more. Available from Tesco's". I think that advert has caused me to lose all faith in humanity. Please make me further plunge the depths of despair with even worse concepts or compilations.

oh, that's nothing. on late-night TV in America, you get to see the 7- volume Time-Life "Singers and Songwriters" compilation, complete with "Those were the songs of the best years of our lives" testimonials from dull-witted boomers.

ahem, "Freedom Rock".

J Blount, Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ahem, "monster ballads."

"is that freedom rock, man?" "yeah, man!" "well, turn it up man!", Sunday, 2 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any fucking number of "chillout" albums.

I rec'd this beauty from Circuit City after making a purchase some time ago. It's still in the wrapper.

  1. HEART - Crazy On You
  2. JOE COCKER - Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word
  3. POISON - Every Rose Has Its Thorn
  4. RICHARD MARX - Don't Mean Nothing
  5. BILLY IDOL - Rebel Yell
  6. BLONDIE - One Way Or Another
  7. PAT BENATAR - Hit Me With Your Best Shot
  8. GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS - Bad To The Bone
  9. DURAN DURAN - Ordinary World
  10. AL GREEN - I'm Still In Love With You
  11. TEDDY PENDERGRASS - Life Is a Song Worth Singing

This selection would make more sense w/out the bid for soul at the end of the set. It would also be better w/ a Duran Duran song that predates the 1st Bush Administration, and that Richard Marx song about murda (holla holla).

I'm thinking it's at its best inside this cellophane wrap, though.

"Hey, man...is that Freedom Rock?"
"Yeah, Man..."
"Well TURN IT UP, MAN!"

There are some good songs on that Circuit City comp.

Sean, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no the worst comps are the local compilations of also-rans - usually with a bad pun or regional joke title like "If You don't like the weather just wait 15 Minutes! - The Anywhereville HC Scene" or "No New York." Bonus craptitude points if it's live (oi, those cbgb's records). (Exception: "This Is Boston Not LA" if only for the title track)

see what fritz did there?

jess, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean, good songs do not a good compilation make if they're shoved between crapola.

My friend Dave did a really bad compilation for me in 1988

There was a series in the late 80's/early nineties called "Soft metal" I think it ran to about volume 4 or something and anyone on this board could probably name at least 80% of the tracks.

Can anyone name more than 3 "Soft metal" tracks they actually like?

Kris.

fifteen years pass...

Saw this Devo CD in a record shop yesterday.
First 5 tracks are live, from their 1989 live album.
Tracks 6-10 contain 2 tracks from 1988's Total Devo and 3 from 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps.
4 of the 10 songs are covers.

It's titled "Devo's Greatest Hits".

1. Whip It
2. Working In A Coal Mine
3. Going Under
4. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
5. Jocko Homo
6. Disco Dancer
7. Spin The Wheel
8. Post Post-Modern Man
9. Don't Be Cruel
10.Morning Dew

yikes. Although tbh nearly everyone who might purchase Devo’s greatest hits is probably just looking for Whip It and could care less about the rest

Karl Malone, Friday, 23 March 2018 19:54 (seven years ago)

Probably not looking for a live version of whip it from 1989, though! lol

Karl Malone, Friday, 23 March 2018 19:55 (seven years ago)

And iirc the version of Jocko Homo on that live album is a languid acoustic guitar re-imagining.
