Was Nirvana even "the new Nirvana" for their time? I mean, as seismic as their impact eventually turned out to be, was it necessarily greater than the initial impact of, say, the Sex Pistols so many years earlier?

Ronan, I 'm not referring specifically to grunge but a band that is liked by the mainstream and underground audience and will rid new metal and boy bands from Top 40 radio.

I remember Nirvana was hailed as "the Guns 'n Roses it's OK to like" so a "new Nirvana" would be something along the lines of "the Limp Bizkit it's OK to like". I guess we will have to wait for that one until the Black Jack Johnson album comes out... Mos Def and his new band turning black America on to rock music. If he can pull it off, that would be a major upset to the music industry, including Clear Channel... I'm not sayng this will or even should happen, I'm just extrapolating a tiny idea...

Of course, a new Nirvana could have the same effect as the old one. The majors buy up every indie band they can find, many of whom will suck. Within a year or two the harsh light of day will destroy the low key scenes that allow great bands to develop. Hasn't anybody read Our Band Could be Your Life?

How about a mini-Nirvana every couple of years.
