I've listen to a few songs and this guys are good so i want to get an album. Which is their best? thanks

Ge, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Bedhead quite a bit but I honestly couldn't tell you. I guess I prefer the first two albums to the last one, but other than that they all kind of blend together, but I'm happy with that.

Josh, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. i have whatfunlifewas and it's quite good

electric sound of jim, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

get What Fun Life Was first....

btw, do you guys like "The New Year" too?

PP, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Sort of. I didn't take to it at all and put it away for at least six months. Since then I've enjoyed listening to it, but it still feels a little weird compared to Bedhead records. The guitars-impersonating-a-viola are gone, and the songs are less droney and sleepy (though not totally undroney or unsleepy), so they sound more anonymous (in the bad sense, not the good sense of Bedhead records). At the very least, I think it's worth hearing, though, if you already have all of Bedhead's records. (What a glowing recommendation!)

Josh, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Their records are all pretty good, my favorite was -Beheaded-.. though if you can find it, the -Macha Loved Bedhead- collab. is better than all of their own albums, IMO..

Bobby D. Gray, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I really can't agree, but I absolutely had to own the "Believe" cover.

Josh, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Bedhead is so cool~~~my fav song is the present (long intro but long enjoyment)

dunno why...I don't really like Macha Loved Bedhead

pp, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto to bobby's macha loves bedhead recommendation. i like bedhead ok, but that one release is fabulous (especially "hey goodbye"). they should have done an entire album with macha, if you ask me.

justin, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I never heard of Macha Loved Bedhead, any good songs suggest?? thanks

Ge, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Macha Loves Bedhead record is probably the best thing by either of those bands. The New Year are Bedhead minus everything I really liked about them.

J Blount, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the new year's 'newness ends' is excellent; lovely melodies in the songs and smart lyrics, they always seem to be right. 'gasoline' a very infectious song

sam, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything Bedhead put out was great. The Macha/Bedhead EP, although just as good, is quite different from Bedhead (or Macha) and so wouldn't be the first place I'd send somebody with a Bedhead yen.

Curt, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was glad the New Year album wasn't simply Bedheadagain. The Kadanes sounded reinvigorated by the new start. Yet the droll vocals and lyrics are a thankful carryover.

Curt, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

have an unlabeled bedhead tape likely "WFLW" (they 1st). lots of the gr8 but hard to cre8 combo of tradition + newness and some nice lyrics (esp. 'crushing' I believe). Saw macha live once and the best song they played was 'never underdose' which is its own wonderful weather system or someshit on the "m loved bh" record (and the only song I listen of on the ep).

gilgamesh, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got WhatFunLifeWas not too long ago and I'm loving it. I prefer them to Low who I can't get into for the life of me.

JC, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

have you tried the radar brothers, then? I do like Low but I think the R B 's 'the singing hatchet' might be worth your time very nice sounding record, too

your shifty lies and senseless visions overflow like frozen rivers

sam, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
speaking of Low, the in the fishtank album they did with the dirty three is excellent (especially their nine minute cover of Niel Young's Down by the River). as far as bedhead goes, i can't say that i like their album with macha, except for the brilliant cover of that cher song at the end (track 86) -- totally cool use of the telephone as the lead. also the new year is a smashingly good band (one needs only to listen to 'one plus one minus one equals one' to find this to be true.

matt culler, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It took me a while to figure out that Transaction de Novo is a really, really good album.

its all pretty darn good. esp their first album.

Grell (Grell), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Beheaded is great and would be a good place to start, I think. Macha/Bedhead is fun.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite 90s band. It's pretty cool that they're from my town (Dallas).

James Blount OTM re: The New Year but I'm already aching to see them when they come tru in April. It's more about THE KADANES than The New Year. Bring it on.

it finally happened to meee

Aaron A., Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"The New Year are Bedhead minus everything I really liked about them"

Blount you are correct, sir. I Heart(ed) Bedhead. I prefer Bedhead sans Macha, but the ILMers above are correct about the Cher cover. The cover improves upon the original immensely; the slowly sung and depressed vocal phrasing gives the lyrics a much more meaningful impact. Alas, Bedhead is dead, long live Bedhead.

j.a.e., Thursday, 6 March 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with Phil - once you warm up to Transaction de Novo, it's really great. Underrated band. The New Year, not so much...

roger adultery, Thursday, 6 March 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite band in the world for a good long stretch of time -- about three years. I can think of no higher praise.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 6 March 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i've always been meaning to get something by bedhead. i like a bit of slo-core, and it's a recommendation that keeps cropping up. perhaps i'll pick up a copy of "beheaded"...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 March 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
hmmm...i finally saw a copy of "beheaded" in a shop. it's 22 euro, so i dunno if i'll pick it up. i went through a spell of listening to a lot of slo-core, and it was one i always meant to get, so maybe i'll snap it up later in the week. anyone wish to persuade me?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, please buy it and then tell me if it's any good!

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Saturday, 3 May 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

have you heard any Bedhead BK? I'm just wondering if you're sole exposure to Bedhead is thru that Consonant album, which would be unfortunate.

Aaron A., Saturday, 3 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I did not purchase Bedhead yet, but alas, it IS on my list. I did get New Year, newness ends. Then I got involved in buying Come. So, sure. Probably Bedhead will be next. Where to start with Bedhead would be the question for me.

I apologize for not listening to music from 1989 to 2002.

Did I just open myself up to a lot of musical recommendations right there? Go ahead...I can take it!

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yes, please buy it and then tell me if it's any good!"

i picked this up at last. it sounds quite rough, and the singing is not great, but there's some beautiful stuff on there. i like it quite a lot, it's definitely recommended (track 2 in particular is a treat.)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I will seek it out forthwith!

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Thursday, 15 May 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh good. I was beginning to wonder if I'd made a mistake.

JC (JC A.), Friday, 28 November 2003 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I had the first Bedhead CD at one time. Good shit. I always thought they were one of those bands that was really original without sounding extremely different or weird. Didn't one of the Butthole Surfers give them a record deal??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 28 November 2003 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like the song "the unpredicable landlord."
i had it on a mixtape long ago.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 28 November 2003 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't one of the Butthole Surfers give them a record deal??

Yep. King Coffey signed them to his Trance Syndicate label.

JC (JC A.), Friday, 28 November 2003 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember liking The Unpredictable Landlord. Bedside Table is the one I remember loving the most at the time. I somehow totally forgot about these guys.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 28 November 2003 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had "Transaction de Novo" for a while and even after a few listens it hasn't caught me.

got whatfunlifewas cheap(ish) today. It's pretty great. Been listening to too much of this stuff lately, though.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 13 February 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

love their cover of disorder! beheaded is my favorite of their stuff. used to play "the rest of the day" over and over. I love the way the lyrics "mybodyhadafewmoreminutes" come out.

kay, Friday, 13 February 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Silkworm did a fun acoustic cover of "Lepidoptera" on last year's You are Dignified ep (sans Matt Kadane plays keys on their albums now.) All I have is Transaction de Novo, which I like, but it's just too quiet/intricate for my current listening practices to get listened to much.

New New Year album recorded, coming out in September :DDDDDDDDDDDD

wilter, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 02:53 (sixteen years ago)

fuck that's ages away, but still :D

wilter, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 02:54 (sixteen years ago)

I had three (all?) Bedhead albums back in the 90s-early 00s, thought all of them were fantastic if a bit indistinguishable - ultimately, I think you only really need one. Which one, I guess, might be up for debate. I seem to recall really like Transaction de Novo so it's surprising to see some resistance to that album in this thread. Then again, it's been at least eight years since I've listened to any of their albums, so maybe I'm misremembering. I've been a little wary of going back to Bedhead after all this time; I fear they won't have aged very well.

pgwp, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

It's actually been the opposite for me. I was afraid they would sound dated, but when I threw Beheaded on recently, I was all "fuck, these guys were even better than I remember"

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

superb band. I dig the 2 new year albums too.

wilter, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

Help me figure out who these guys are in my head. How are they different than Codeine?

filthy dylan, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

Xpost. I don't know, I hear dicipline and restraint, instead of one-dimensionality? Plus, there's something very human and normal (?) in their songs, that I don't get from many post-rock bands. In that respect, the Kadanes (especially in Bedhead) have more in common with first gen slowcore bands like Low, Codeine. Maybe not Red House Painters, though.

Mule, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago)

Yeah Bedhead were something special. They were careful, but I wouldn't say conservative. They had some really gorgeous melodies. I always found this song really really interesting and subtle the way it unfolds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz5pPgFhNLk

Evan, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:15 (eleven years ago)

Oops, should have spaced the link down one.

Evan, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:16 (eleven years ago)

Love that record.

Mule, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:20 (eleven years ago)

Me too. But that song always remained particularly special. When I discovered it the straightforward angsty melodrama of other artists felt so much sillier. It got me to seek out and respect music that seemed to consciously restrain for overdoing this or that. Adds so much dimension.

Evan, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:26 (eleven years ago)

They're not conservative, just disarmingly precise with their arrangements.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:53 (eleven years ago)

They are also very patient.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:54 (eleven years ago)

restrain from***

Evan, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 21:14 (eleven years ago)

What I loved about watching Bedhead live was the way a guitarist would just sort of stand there idle for half the song until it was his turn to (literally) chime in.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 21:54 (eleven years ago)

I'd love a new New Year album. The last two were gold, even better than Bedhead in my book

Evan R, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 21:55 (eleven years ago)

Bedhead's drummer is fantastic, too.

nerve_pylon, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 22:25 (eleven years ago)

I appreciate the restraint-- it's why I got into it in the first place. It just seemed like almost all of their songs follow a similar feel, a similar pattern. It's OK for a song or two, but gets very monotonous after a while. Like I said, I don't feel about saying that.

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 22:51 (eleven years ago)

The last New Year album is so good, only Transaction de Novo being better in the Kadane catalogue in my view. Playing 'Folios' right now, first time in a good while. That song could go on for ever.

"I don't think the good years I've got can wait". That's a nice little memento mori, and sort of sums up the feel I get from this band. Like, live your little life, and do it well and good.

Mule, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 15:34 (eleven years ago)

Argh.. "good", "good", "little", "little". What lousy writing.

Mule, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 15:36 (eleven years ago)

Huh, the think the first two Bedhead records are perfect, the third less perfect but full of some nice surprises and detours. The New Year I treat as an awesome echo. Even though it's a new band, it's also the same band, but different, and not quite the same sound as Bedhead but certainly the same vibe. When I saw the New Year live they were great. I once saw the Kadanes play as a duo and their sound even worked well like that.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 16:06 (eleven years ago)

Like I said, I don't feel about saying that.

Um, I don't feel GOOD about saying that.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago)

that's where my college station slotted them. don't know where 'post-rock' came from.

Oh boy, excited here. I always feel like Matt Kadane is my cool-world alter-ego - also a Matthew K, a midcareer PhD academic teaching in a university, dark hair. It got a little out of hand when I bought a black Telecaster Custom, not my fault it was so good to play.

Mule, Sunday, 22 December 2019 03:07 (five years ago)

Incredible. Been thinking about them recently too with the new Duster album that just came out. Scratches a similar itch for me.

gman59, Sunday, 22 December 2019 04:04 (five years ago)

Bedhead is practically perfect in every way. I miss them all the time.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 22 December 2019 04:13 (five years ago)

Didn’t know about the new Duster. Will duly check it out.

Mule, Sunday, 22 December 2019 10:56 (five years ago)

I'm not sure I've heard or even heard of Duster (not ringing a bell), and the one track I found sounded more space-rock than Bedheady. However, I did come across this band:

https://sprain.bandcamp.com/track/anything-2

Which at least here sounds a lot like Bedhead.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 22 December 2019 13:58 (five years ago)

Duster has a lot of space-rock elements but also a lot of straight up slowcore indie tracks too that put those 2 bands together in my mind. Try the new one. Nonesuch also put out a career spanning comp not too long ago which is rad too.

gman59, Sunday, 22 December 2019 15:40 (five years ago)

Numero Group, you mean.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 22 December 2019 15:57 (five years ago)

There's a bit of a Bedhead vibe to parts of the (excellent) recent Peaer record.

Simon H., Sunday, 22 December 2019 15:59 (five years ago)

Listening to the Overseas-record the Kadanes did with David Bazan and Will Johnson a few years. It’s not as controlled as Bedhead’s songs and, to a degree, more straight up indie. But it definitely has the guitars.

Mule, Sunday, 22 December 2019 16:08 (five years ago)

This music has always been great, but has also aged beautifully.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 April 2024 05:31 (one year ago)

possibly the greatest album co-written by someone named bubba

mookieproof, Friday, 5 April 2024 05:35 (one year ago)

Yeah I really thought it was a recent band when it came on in the "recommended" after an album I was listening to.

H.P, Friday, 5 April 2024 05:35 (one year ago)

The brothers K do that beautiful "amplified wires intertwining" dual-guitar clean tone so well, it's literally mesmerising to me. Never tire of those records and always seem to be emulating their guitar lines when I play,
I was many years into my fandom before I realised they are a Lebanese-American band!

i missed them when they were active but eventually listened to them due to the silkworm connection and they are so great and also so consistent. everything i've listened to has been great, they keep the same sound all the time (even on the new year albums) but find little nooks and crannies in that sound to mix things up.

na (NA), Friday, 5 April 2024 12:43 (one year ago)

love this band

sean gramophone, Friday, 5 April 2024 13:37 (one year ago)

I forgot that Matt played a bit of keyboards in later Silkworm.

I once played some Bedhead for an older friend of mine, and he was absolutely entranced, because it's so rare to hear a band focused on clean (Fender) guitar sounds, let alone guitars so intricately and clearly worked out. He kind of scratched his head over how they even wrote songs, because everything fit together so well.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 April 2024 13:48 (one year ago)

The collaboration with Macha is so so great

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4FjVjyjiaQ

brimstead, Friday, 5 April 2024 14:45 (one year ago)

Fun fact, Matt played drums on that one! I was emailing him for a while and mentioned it was my favourite Bedhead drum track (or maybe Half Thought), and he was pleased

assert (matttkkkk), Saturday, 6 April 2024 07:13 (one year ago)

Also altho I completely agree that their sound is the epitome of Fender clean tone, Bubba more often plays a Les Paul which surprised me. Matt’s Tele Custom is generally set to the neck pickup which is one of the early widerange reissues, basically a generic PAF style under the hood. So it’s generally humbuckers into Twin Reverbs.

assert (matttkkkk), Saturday, 6 April 2024 07:18 (one year ago)

It's been so long since I saw them play in any context, Bedhead or New Year or even just the brothers. What did the third guitarist play?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 April 2024 12:51 (one year ago)

I saved a better quality version of the Disease video a million years ago - looks like 3 x Teles (two with neck buckers) and a Precision - also keys somehow?
