vocoder def the best,
autotune often makes me feel queasy.
It's like not robo "enough"
Hanna Montana through autotune is sickening.

auto-tune is vile

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 2 January 2009 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I voted for vocoder, but someone like Simon Posford can do pretty good with autotune.

Younger Brother - Crumblenaut:

(it sounds like he actually uses both in this track)

A vocoder features prominently in five of the nine tracks. Neil Young found that when using a vocoder when communicating to his son (who was born with cerebral palsy), he was able to elicit a better response.

This thread is going to reach a point where someone explains the very different concepts in action in AutoTune vs. a vocoder, but for some reason I am hoping not to be the person who does that.

nabisco, Friday, 2 January 2009 19:37 (fifteen years ago) link

This thread really isn't about the diff between the two, nabs.

( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( (libcrypt), Friday, 2 January 2009 19:39 (fifteen years ago) link

for these purposes all u need to know is they can both produce robovoice

i am thinking of this as zapp vs. tpain, which made the choice much easier if that helps

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Friday, 2 January 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link

It's kinda about the reason people said that Frampton used a vocoder.

deej posted in this in the last autotune thread and it does a pretty decent job of explaining the difference without getting too offbase or confusing:

❤¯\㋡/¯❤ (ice cr?m), Friday, 2 January 2009 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

so is a talkbox a type of vocoder - can we get a ruling

❤¯\㋡/¯❤ (ice cr?m), Friday, 2 January 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Well a talkbox is the same general principle as a vocoder -- taking a signal and shaping its characteristics using your mouth -- so ... kinda? It's like an acoustic vocoder, I guess.

nabisco, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

(xpost) No, it's not a vocoder. Apart from the difference in how they work, a talkbox only has one input, while a vocoder needs two (a modulator and a carrier).

snoball, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Although I suppose that in a loose sense, when you use a talkbox you're taking a sound and impressing on it some of the characteristics of the human voice, so "acoustic vocoder" isn't actually a bad description.

snoball, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

how would u describe the difference of their respective sounds

❤¯\㋡/¯❤ (ice cr?m), Friday, 2 January 2009 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean they sound way similar right - where autotune robovoice is pretty distinct

❤¯\㋡/¯❤ (ice cr?m), Friday, 2 January 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

it all sounds like a bunch of karaoke to me

sonderangerbot, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

talkbox i think generally sounds scratchier and more pixelated, almost like just a more high tech wah-wah pedal, whereas vocoders tend to sound a little more fluid and human. although it all depends who's using it really.

some dude, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago) link

offering autotune @ karaoke would be a great idea irl

❤¯\㋡/¯❤ (ice cr?m), Friday, 2 January 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

like not necessarily the robovoice effect but the one that helps people hit notes

❤¯\㋡/¯❤ (ice cr?m), Friday, 2 January 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

you can't really use a talkbox in any subtle way either right? either it's there or it's not

sonderangerbot, Friday, 2 January 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Too soon to tell. Autotune as an effect has a pretty limited history until 2008.

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Friday, 2 January 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Um yes you can use a talkbox in a subtle way, you turn it down or maybe don't shape actual words with your mouth.

Muomas (nickalicious), Friday, 2 January 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

To be fair talkbox really is a high-tech wah pedal (it is a signal filter, only the "filter" is actually your mouth).

Muomas (nickalicious), Friday, 2 January 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I like autotune and I know this is a terribly rockist opinion but I can't help but feel like a bunch of assholes who don't know how to sing are big time stars now because autotune robovoice is so popular.

El Tomboto, Friday, 2 January 2009 21:02 (fifteen years ago) link

almost like just a more high tech wah-wah pedal ... vocoders tend to sound a little more fluid and human

This is because a talkbox is basically like having a speaker in your mouth, and then making mouth-shapes to affect the sound coming out -- so it mostly affects open-mouth vowel sounds, and you hear the oo-wah-mwah parts of it. Whereas when you use voice and a vocoder, there's a whole vocal signal going in and shaping the original sound, so (a) you'll hear more of what the mouth is doing (consonant sounds and plosives and whatever else), plus (b) you might also have a wet/dry mix where the vocal signal is mixed in alongside the result of the vocoder.

Both of those involve hearing some original signal -- usually an instrument -- that's just being shaped by a voice; there's not necessarily any audible sound of a real voice in there. Whereas AutoTune is just taking a real voice and shifting its pitch so it's always hitting an exact note. (You get the robot effect from this by changing the settings so it slams every note into key immediately -- so when your singer changes notes or swings around a few notes, it's slamming the pitch from place to place at ... right angles. E.g., you sing "do you believe in life after love" and the original legato up-and-down swoop in "believe" gets robotized into specific notes only.)

nabisco, Friday, 2 January 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago) link

when i saw joe walsh years back he did that great talkbox solo on "rocky mountain way." sweet.

i don't have a vocoder/autotune preference, but i think the vocoderish use of autotune is a nice example of whatever that word is when technology turns out to be used for something other than its intended purpose. otoh, maybe there should be a word for when technology is overused for something other than its intended purpose. at the very least, its given late-'00s hip-hop/r&b an immediate timestamp that will seem embarrassing in about two years, cheesily endearing in 8, and will be regurgitated by hipster dance bands in 2024.

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Friday, 2 January 2009 21:13 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm pretty sure the "regurgitated by hipster dance bands" phase of the cycle is mere weeks away, if it hasn't happened already.

yah that stuff will get compiled on 'death autotune 1' and death autotune 2' which will be revived just before actual R&B and hiphop that uses autotune gets revived

the story I always heard was that the producer dudes used a cracked copy of autotune, suddenly had a very high-profile hit on their hands, and were forced to give these awkward "n-no, of course we didn't use autotune!" denials because they didn't want antares to drop the hammer on 'em
