That should actually be "BEST DAVE MATTHEWS BAND SINGLE," as I didn't include "Gravedigger," "Save Me" or "Oh" from his 2003 solo album Some Devil.

da croupier, Saturday, 3 January 2009 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Did they break up after the saxophone player died?

"80s Baby" (Z S), Saturday, 3 January 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago) link

"What Would You Say" easy. As a debut single it perked up my lil ears and I said "this is pretty all right, I could get with this." But then they released more songs and that was the end of that

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 3 January 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, how did I manage to avoid hearing ANYTHING of their last two albums? Aren't they incredibly famous?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 3 January 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago) link

*off

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 3 January 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I heard "American Baby," which was awful. Wish I heard "Everybody Wake Up (Our Finest Hour Arrives)" which I'm assuming is about a dream he had about Obama in 2006.

Did they break up after the saxophone player died?

They thought long and hard about stopping, and though they realized that LeRoi Moore would have been honored if they'd hung it up after his passing, they decided there was so much money to be made that they continued with the jammy-jams and the live CDs. He's been replaced by a dude who rolled with Bela Fleck.

Crash Into Me FTW

redmond, Saturday, 3 January 2009 18:43 (sixteen years ago) link

What Would You Say
Too Much
So Much To Stay
Don't Drink The Water

^^^ these all pretty good honestly. And I have a weird soft spot for "I Did It," if only because it gave a lot of my material to my "Dave Matthews was murdered and replaced with a lookalike" theory.

Voting for "So Much To Say," one of the first music videos I waited around hoping to see on again. (The others: "Champagne Supernova" and "Triumph.")

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 3 January 2009 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link

lyrics to "Crash Into Me" are so barf that it takes it out of the running for sure

^^^^^OTM!!!!!!!! (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 3 January 2009 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Doc Casino pretty much picked the 5 DMB songs I can stand. Add "Ants Marching" and that's a 6-song iTunes playlist I might enjoy listening to once a year when I'm 45 and nostalgic for the 90s.

I am shocked and appaulled (sic?) at this amount of live that both "Red Red Wine" and "Wishing Well" are getting in the 1988 thread. So, without further ado, here is a list of some Dave Matthews songs that are better than both:

What Would You Say
Jimi Thing
Warehouse
Ants Marching
Satellite
So Much To Stay
Two Step
Lie in Our Graves
Crash Into Me
Tripping Billies
Crush
The Space Between
Where Are You Going

I haven't heard any of his recent stuff, though. His career seems to have taken a bit of a nosedive, no?

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 3 January 2009 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

"I Did It" is 10000x more annoying than "What Would You Say," I'm ho.

I can't believe Stevie Nicks is singing that song in my ears. Thanks ILM. God, thank you so much.

She is the goth queen.

With Oatmeal Sauce (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Saturday, 3 January 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I specifically listened to 'I Did It' before choosing 'What Would You Say' as their most annoying single. The 'fast' part of the verses in 'I Did It' is actually good. But the chorus of 'What Would You Say' is a notch worse than the chorus of 'I Did it'. Which I mean to say, is that it's terrible. I feel like I have to judge that song solely on the chorus because it's so distinct and keeps coming up annoyingly all the time (even though there is a good instrumental part near the end).

Satellite is actually a pretty lovely song with a nice intro, funkily odd-timed drum line, and questionable grammar. But there is so much to hate in the rest of their catalog, as has been so amply documented by 10,000 posts on the infamous "so bad and hated" thread.

At the time of their first and second records they were still a local/regional phenomenon, haunting the Virginian college towns. They played every Wednesday (I think) at the Flood Zone in Richmond. We would see the DMB guys in our usual bar; I had a devastating crush on a girl whose roomate dated the bass player. My band never opened for them but we did open for Bio Ritmo, who did open for Dave. Sometimes I think about this and reflect upon the vicissitudes of fame, but mostly I don't.

I've heard tons of DMB songs on the radio and the teevee, and known a few folks who were way into 'em, so I expected to be able to make some sense of this poll. But no. I don't recognize any of these songs titles. None of the quoted lyrics seem familiar. What's the one where he's sitting on a chair and he plays the guitar?

but I just heard "Two Step" again and it brought back fond memories....until the "celebrate we will" part cos some shitty club at my school appropriated that quote for their t-shirt like EVERY CLUB seemed to do with a shitty DMG quote.

anyway i would've voted for "too much" (great fiddlin' bridge on that one) or "don't drink the water" (one of the few positive qualities i remember about before these crowded streets is the extremely tasteful application of alanis morissette harmonies on that song and "spoon")

oh and also i totally believe "crush" would be a decent smooth jazz jam if dave weren't being a huge horn dog on top of it

the harmony parts on the "celebrate we will"s are kind of hilarious. I still have good memories of my brother picking me up from grade school football practice, rolling the windows down, and blasting that song

yup. they were kinda influential for me in getting into jazz tho so I cant hate too much

i still listen to #41 into Say Goodbye a couple times a year. the instrumental back half of #41 melting into the intro of Say Goodbye is so good. Some of my favorite drumming ever tbf.

once in a while i revisit before these crowded streets to see if my ninth grade opinion of it as a "masterpiece" has any merit but it is half garbage. band is deeply hampered by dave's inability to pronounce a word normally. still think "the stone" is the closest this band ever got to being "good" though

Dave Matthews Band satisfies an aging audience at Oak Mountain Amphitheater

Dave Matthews wasn't particularly talkative after his initial sporting-themed salutations. And the audience was never particularly fully invested. But it was an early summer Tuesday and both were happy to see one another and navigate the evening together.

"Gravedigger," "So Much to Say" and "Ants Marching" closed the formal set before the band returned to encore with "Bob Law" and "You Might Die Trying."

Dave Matthews has created Dreaming Tree wines. It's a step. Because if 49-year-old Dave Matthews is going to successfully navigate this portion of his career, he'll need to move from Top-40 hitmaker to jam-maker to lifestyle brand. He's currently between the latter two. The goal, it would seem, is Jimmy Buffett. Widespread Panic is calling it quits, which means no other artist is aiming at what Buffett did for Baby Boomers in the Gen-X and millennial set. As Dave Matthews' live performances become increasingly more reliant on nostalgia, his ability to maintain will increasingly rely on finding new ways to repackage and sell it. He's young yet, and Tuesday's crowd is eager to listen to his pitch.
