boom was so overrated. such a lazy premier beat.

im gonna go with one of these -

Devin the Dude - Doobie Ashtray
The X-Ecutioners - Premier's X-Ecution

I haven't heard a lot of these, but two of 'em - Unfucwitable and Doobie Ashtray - are among my top whatever number of hip hop tracks of all time.

I'm not sure what is meant when titchy says Boom is lazy. Just because looping a few bars and cutting in a chorus is perhaps what he's particularly famous for doesn't make it lazy?

i dunno, i think this period was around when i thought primo started to phone it in a lot. songs like 6th sense, boom, and a few others, just seemed too easy for him compared to doobie ashtray or 2nd childhood. or maybe i just hate that loop he used on boom. royce sounds even more limited than usual on it too.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Sunday, 4 January 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah i dunno either, the beat itself sounds good to me, but there's a "brown ball jazz remix" of Boom that i listen to a lot more, and Royce sounds better on that track, which i suppose is an indictment of the original track. Royce is hit and miss, he's not "the truth" but he does a good enough impersonation on various tracks and mixtapes to make him frustrating.

Unfucwitable follows the premier signature we're talking about, in the same year, but sounds great. Lady of Rage rips it, which doesn't hurt.

Hilarious stickman, do we judge by the totality of the track - rap performance + beat - or the beat itself? (Not that it would change much in my case as of what i've heard up to now)

Premier never struck me as a producer in the studio with the artist, supervising punch-ins and doing vocal splices or whatever. More as a guy who sends you the beat. Anyone know if this the case? I heard he worked a lot with nas for illmatic and there was back and forth and tailoring of the track and so forth between artist and producer, which contradicts my perception a bit (also seems surprising since nas was a new kid, and hardly has a rep as a beatpicking maestro).

"My Friend" is great and I got a mad soft spot for "The One and Only" but this has gotta be "Doobie Ashtray"

I like the Xzibit beat.

ichard Thompson (Hurting 2), Monday, 5 January 2009 04:08 (sixteen years ago)

My stuff about Royce was written before seeing, rather than in response to, Dom P.'s recent rundown of Royce in 2008, BTW, and with 2007 tracks like Hit 'Em, The Dream and the thugged-out Young Jeezy-I Luv It version of Return of Malcolm, I concede he hits a fair amount of the time. (I prefer Shake This to most of the Bar Exam 2 though.)

So on-topic, I know, but hey.
