This was inspired by hearing "The Perfect Drug" on my way to work this morning btw. It's the first NIN single I can remember hearing and the vaguely dnb bridge blew my fragile little mind. "Down In It" almost takes it just for the way his voice goes up at the end and the creaky piano, but "The Perfect Drug" basically sounds perfect to me even now.

The only ones of these I'd say I don't actually like are "Happiness In Slavery" and "Starfuckers Inc".

(I was always mad that "The Only Time" and "Heresy" weren't singles)

yeah, last year i stumbled across "Deep" on YouTube and had somehow forgot it existed for a few years, whereas most of these are pretty burned into my brain.

ok add piggy to my list. march of the pigs not so much, it's just too unsubtle (yeah yeah, look up 'unsubtle' in the dictionary and it'll say 'nine inch nails', i know).

i think the with teeth singles might be amongst my least favourite tracks off the album.

Went with march of the pigs but could have went with just about any of the singles from the first two full-lengths. Never liked anything i've heard after perfect drug.

Am tempted to go with Closer, it's one of the best put-together things on here. The kick-drum which sounds completely electronic but at the same time like a living heartbeat, the almost funky organic bassline, the sinister synth sounds which increase for every verse, the under-the-breath middle eight, the beautiful descending piano coda...

Good synopsis of Closer there, it would be my second choice. You're doing the bassline a disservice by calling it just 'almost' funky though.

closer is totally his prince song. if only it weren't so overplayed.

"Everyday Is Exactly The Same" is an incredibly-arranged song top to bottom and "The Hand That Feeds" is just pulsating sledgehammer sex up through that bizarre bleepy bridge. "Only" is the weakest link and even that has a fucking awesome chorus.

I know Year Zero has its fans, but does anyone think "Survivalism" or "Capital G" rank at all here?

it's completely and hopelessly overplayed, but it's still his best song, so voted for it

I totally forgot how impressive "Happiness in Slavery," especially when that quasi-funk lick kicks in. The Broken EP might be my favorite album of his.

I never saw that scene, yet I am certain the comparison is v.v. accurate.

I love "Piggy," but I've never heard it outside the album so I can't even think of it as a single.

I like sexy Trent, I guess, b/c my follow up choices would be "Closer" (seriously, I know it is the boring obvious choice and all, but it is what it is for a reason) & "Happiness in Slavery" (Alfred OTM, kind of).

I remember buying TDS upon its release and exclaiming about how huge a single "Closer" could have been if Trent didn't shoot himself if the foot with an unairable chorus. Funny how that turned out.

We're In This Together, because it was the one that really grabbed me at the time (it and Just Like You Imagined next to each other were basically my NIN staple)

...although Closer is probably the objectively better song.

The album version of TDTWWA is kind of boring.

It may have been a promo release...? Anyone who had the album/CD would be gagging to play that in a goth club anyway because it's slow and stompy and yells at God a lot.

The Perfect Drug is too bitty. All the bits are pretty good, but they don't really gel for me.

Perfetc Drug was the 1st time it seemed to me that Trent had run out of ideas and everything since has been phoning it in, retreading same ground, or grasping at the ideas of others.
