stop HOOSing a boring tuna (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

damn, lotta good songs. why "1,000,000" but no "Discipline," though?

some dude, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

Sin v Wish v Closer v Hurt

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

xp oh that's my fault, i accidentally deleted it when clearing the chaff out of the poll options box.

stop HOOSing a boring tuna (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

call it a write-in?

stop HOOSing a boring tuna (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

sin

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

I really really really love the With Teeth singles.

Still, "Sin".

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

my top 10 in order: Perfect Drug, March Of The Pigs, We're In This Together, Hurt, Wish, Discipline, Physical, Closer, Down In It, The Hand That Feeds

some dude, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

Might go for Piggy.

chap, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

This was inspired by hearing "The Perfect Drug" on my way to work this morning btw. It's the first NIN single I can remember hearing and the vaguely dnb bridge blew my fragile little mind. "Down In It" almost takes it just for the way his voice goes up at the end and the creaky piano, but "The Perfect Drug" basically sounds perfect to me even now.

stop HOOSing a boring tuna (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

The only ones of these I'd say I don't actually like are "Happiness In Slavery" and "Starfuckers Inc".

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

(I was always mad that "The Only Time" and "Heresy" weren't singles)

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

"piggy". the drums toward the end are ridiculous

rio (r1o natsume), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

Deep is a bit meh.

chap, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, last year i stumbled across "Deep" on YouTube and had somehow forgot it existed for a few years, whereas most of these are pretty burned into my brain.

some dude, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

closer, march of the pigs, perfect drug, head like a hole, maybe only

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

heh I had the "wait, what song is that?" reaction to "Burn"

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

ok add piggy to my list. march of the pigs not so much, it's just too unsubtle (yeah yeah, look up 'unsubtle' in the dictionary and it'll say 'nine inch nails', i know).

i think the with teeth singles might be amongst my least favourite tracks off the album.

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah me too. xpost re Burn

I think I might have to go with Wish on this one.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

WISH

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

Went with march of the pigs but could have went with just about any of the singles from the first two full-lengths. Never liked anything i've heard after perfect drug.

ColinO, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

Am tempted to go with Closer, it's one of the best put-together things on here. The kick-drum which sounds completely electronic but at the same time like a living heartbeat, the almost funky organic bassline, the sinister synth sounds which increase for every verse, the under-the-breath middle eight, the beautiful descending piano coda...

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

Good synopsis of Closer there, it would be my second choice. You're doing the bassline a disservice by calling it just 'almost' funky though.

chap, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

closer is totally his prince song. if only it weren't so overplayed.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

"Everyday Is Exactly The Same" is an incredibly-arranged song top to bottom and "The Hand That Feeds" is just pulsating sledgehammer sex up through that bizarre bleepy bridge. "Only" is the weakest link and even that has a fucking awesome chorus.

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

I know Year Zero has its fans, but does anyone think "Survivalism" or "Capital G" rank at all here?

some dude, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

it's completely and hopelessly overplayed, but it's still his best song, so voted for it
xposts

expletive for lady parts (Granny Dainger), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

xp: "Capital G", yes. "Survivalism"... not so much. (Both "God Given" and "The Great Destroyer" are way way way WAY better.)

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

I totally forgot how impressive "Happiness in Slavery," especially when that quasi-funk lick kicks in. The Broken EP might be my favorite album of his.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

TS: "Broken" vs "Fixed"

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

"Wish" so easily.

merriweather post ironic (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

FACT: My wife almost broke up with me after I played "Wish" for her.

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

It didn't help when you played "Every Day Is Exactly The Same" shortly thereafter.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

Well, since this happened in 1993, I didn't do that.

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

the first time i heard "wish" was in middle school when a girl wanted to play it for me over the phone and put the phone RIGHT UP AGAINST THE SPEAKER

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

lol, how did the reconstructive inner-ear surgeries go

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

I'm picturing Dan serenading his girl with "Wish" and dancing and gesturing like the dude that sang Styx on Freaks & Geeks.

some dude, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

I never saw that scene, yet I am certain the comparison is v.v. accurate.

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Monday, 5 January 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

Closer

baaderonixx, Monday, 5 January 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

voted piggy, but closer has the best remixes.

bnw, Monday, 5 January 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

I love "Piggy," but I've never heard it outside the album so I can't even think of it as a single.

some dude, Monday, 5 January 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

shoulda been an official halo poll imo

bnw, Monday, 5 January 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

"The Day the World Went Away"
"We're in This Together"

both of these = awesome

Sold.

Love most of these, but probably would've voted for "Closer" anyway...

ilxor, Monday, 5 January 2009 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

Actually... "The Day the World Went Away" gets my vote.

Because it deserves at least one.

Waiting for traditional "Ned to thread" > "I don't comment in poll threads" ritual.

"80s Baby" (Z S), Monday, 5 January 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

Well, it's nice of him to not want to sway the results with his influence.

some dude, Monday, 5 January 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

Ned to thread.

*crickets*

ilxor, Monday, 5 January 2009 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

I surprised myself and voted for Head Like a Hole.

fwiw (rockapads), Monday, 5 January 2009 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, what happened?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 January 2009 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

Can a vote for "Sin" go to "Get Down Make Love?" I know it was technically a B-side, but it had its own video and everything..

I like sexy Trent, I guess, b/c my follow up choices would be "Closer" (seriously, I know it is the boring obvious choice and all, but it is what it is for a reason) & "Happiness in Slavery" (Alfred OTM, kind of).

I remember buying TDS upon its release and exclaiming about how huge a single "Closer" could have been if Trent didn't shoot himself if the foot with an unairable chorus. Funny how that turned out.

Pain don't hurt. (Pillbox), Monday, 5 January 2009 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

i was all set to vote for 'reckoner' or 'pinion', but then realised they they don't have the singles status.

hmmm going to go with 'closer'. 'wish' would be a close second.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 06:25 (sixteen years ago)

It's either "Physical" or "Into The Void."

billstevejim, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 06:47 (sixteen years ago)

+1 for "We're in This Together".

Trackpants Tree, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

WE'RE IN THIS TOGETHER NOW, NONE OF THEM CAN STOP US NOW.

Still think "Just like you imagined" is the best thing they have done, though.

youcangoyourownway, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 01:54 (sixteen years ago)

This is a lot harder without "Discipline" as an option

da croupier, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

We're In This Together, because it was the one that really grabbed me at the time (it and Just Like You Imagined next to each other were basically my NIN staple)

...although Closer is probably the objectively better song.

Which version of "The Day The World Went Away" are we talking?

I have "boned" two lesbians. Anything can happen. (country matters), Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:07 (sixteen years ago)

The album version of TDTWWA is kind of boring.

chap, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:18 (sixteen years ago)

Still think "Just like you imagined" is the best thing they have done, though.

I'll rep for that track, too.

ilxor, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 05:06 (sixteen years ago)

voted for head like a hole, which is the only NIN song i've heard that i don't flat-out hate

most people i know with taste in the same ballpark as me love this band. i have never gotten it.

Cam 2 is at the rail. This is the one that dies midway.

Cam 3 is above the crowd to the lefthand side.

System, Friday, 9 January 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

boo at the (to my mind) low placement of "Sin", wau awesome at the (to my mind) surprisingly high placement of "We're In This Together Now"

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Friday, 9 January 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

surprisingly high placement of 'the perfect drug' if you ask me. i find that track kind of irksome

Charlie Howard, Friday, 9 January 2009 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

I realize I can only remember 4 or 5 songs from this whole list.

baaderonixx, Friday, 9 January 2009 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

Which ones? (Besides "Head Like A Hole" and "Closer", lol)

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Friday, 9 January 2009 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

Downward and With Teeth singles basically. Most of the other ones I know, but somehow the titles don't stick

baaderonixx, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

ps wasn't Terrible Lie a single? I used to hear that one all the time in the (goth) clubs back in the day.

baaderonixx, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

It may have been a promo release...? Anyone who had the album/CD would be gagging to play that in a goth club anyway because it's slow and stompy and yells at God a lot.

^likes black girls (HI DERE), Friday, 9 January 2009 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

i used to hear 'reckoner' in the odd club too

Charlie Howard, Friday, 9 January 2009 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

WTF?? The Perfect Drug? That's a load of shit, man! I'm outta here.

DavidM, Friday, 9 January 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

blame me, I voted for it

some dude, Friday, 9 January 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

The Perfect Drug is too bitty. All the bits are pretty good, but they don't really gel for me.

chap, Friday, 9 January 2009 17:07 (sixteen years ago)

Perfetc Drug was the 1st time it seemed to me that Trent had run out of ideas and everything since has been phoning it in, retreading same ground, or grasping at the ideas of others.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 9 January 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, it was pretty cool!

some dude, Friday, 9 January 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

cool as a corpse, yes
