Scooter - C/D?

Scooter. Ultra-Teutonic party rave. A nine (!!) year streak of hits using the same formula. Very easy to hate. But still, the ultimate pop machine? Forbidden pleasure? Just look at the list:

Hyper Hyper, How Much Is The Fish?, We Are The Greatest, Nessaja, Ramp! (The Logical Song), Call Me Manana, Faster Harder Scooter, Posse (I Need You On The Floor), I Shot The DJ, Move Your Ass, Fuck The Millennium, Endless Summer, Back In The UK...

Siegbran Hetteson, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How Much Is The Fish?

!!

jess, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Take off your shirts and await further instructions.

One great Scooter thing is they released a single "Back in the UK", and then realised they were way more popular in Ireland, so they re- released it as "Back in Ireland".

Yeah.

Their cover of "Rebel Yell" is boomtastic.

DV, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Related to Silver Scooter?

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Scooter was the weakest-ass Muppet ever.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No way - Scooter was the Brian Epstein of the Muppets. Kermit's nephew (Tad?) = weakest-ass Muppet ever.

J Blount, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kermit's nephew? His name's Robin. Forgot about him. Yeah, he's far more weakass.
On another note, is Animal based on Keith Moon or John Bonham? DISCUSS

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Pepe the Prawn is the worst Muppet ever, but let's not get bogged down in semetics, huh?

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Pepe the Prawn is the worst Muppet ever, but let's not get bogged down in semetics, huh?
Wait, now we're getting into which Muppets are Jewish?

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Man, that was a Freudian slip and a half... I need sleep.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
I'm never sure if Scooter are totally tongue-in-cheek or not. I think they're hilarious. Is that why everybody who buys their records loves them as well?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 27 March 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

until 'The Logical Song' the only people who bought Scooter records were 13 year old German Amiga-fanatics in very tight jeans

i did secretly like 'Move Your Ass' tho, and i am intrigued by the 'rebel yell' cover

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say more dud than most. Scooter are 90s dance music's answer to Baccara or Modern Talking

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 27 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The one that did it for me was Nessaja, which came after The Logical Song. Is the earlier stuff as good? What's happened with this band that they've been able to operate so successfully for so long without the ILM massive picking up on them? How is their new single, Weekend?

JoB (JoB), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't really know how i missed them for so long

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Sample lyric of new Scooter single:

This one is going out to everybody in the place!
Sounds of the track attacker!
Go ahead!
Yes!
Here comes the chicks Terminator!
In Control!
Aaaggrhh!
'Pon the mic I'm the teacher!
Spead my words like a preacher!
Cut the crap! Get the slap!
Drum'n'Bass still on the map!
'Pon the mic you can't stop me!
Flat on your back like one, two, three! Yeah!
Here we come!

Terrific! I'm going to get this ASAP.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Here is some more:

Alright, crew! It's weeeeeeeekeeeeeeeeeend!
Yes!
We're not the monkeys, but we've got the key!
I'm the fast chatter - no one's better than me!
Yeeeah!

And the chorus comes from Weekend by Dutch Seventies band Earth & Fire. If I'm a good Dutchman at all, I should support this!

JoB (JoB), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone explain the connection?

http://www.scootermassive.narod.ru/albums/sheff.gif

I mean, there are very few things to be proud of if you come from Sheffield, but this is just taking the piss.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And the chorus comes from Weekend by Dutch Seventies band Earth & Fire

Ah! So THAT's where it comes from...I've been trying to remember what it was for some time. And the looped synth line underneath Baxters MCing in Weekend! is lifted from Push Strange World 2000. That aside, ever heard the original Nessaja by Peter Maffay?

The (x-rated) video for Weekend! is rediculously amusing and disturbing at the same time, I'm sure I've mentioned it on some other thread.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 28 March 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the earlier stuff as good?

Maybe better. Their 24 Carat Gold singles compilation from last year is all you need, the first 24 singles in decreasing chronological order:

01. Nessaja
02. The Logical Song
03. Aiii Shot The DJ
04. Posse (I Need You On The Floor)
05. She's The Sun
06. I´m Your Pusher
07. Fuck The Millennium
08. Faster Harder Scooter
09. Call Me Mañana
10. I Was Made For Lovin' You
11. We Are The Greatest
12. How Much Is The Fish?
13. No Fate
14. The Age Of Love
15. Fire
16. Break It Up
17. I´m Raving
18. Rebel Yell
19. Let Me Be Your Valentine
20. Back In The U.K.
21. Endless Summer
22. Friends
23. Move Your Ass!
24. Hyper Hyper

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I had "Friends" and liked it and was aware of Scooter but never investigated further, silly me. The Dirty Vicar is a long-standing admirer I believe.

For my birthday I got a double Scooter DVD which made me very happy.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they considered a comedy act by everyone or is that just me/us?

JoB (JoB), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think they're a comedy band, I think they're funny.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

scoootaaahhh, Friday, 28 March 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think they're a comedy band, I think they're funny.

That's what I mean. Does comedy act have negative implications? I suppose it does.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Euch, they were all over Scottish Local Radio in the mid-90s. Hyper Hyper and Friends were hammered into my brain with unrelenting frequency. It's very hard to appreciate the absurdity and good-natured hyperactivity of their songs if you've had this experience.

This way to the 'tartan techno' revival, eh? If Scooter are acceptable, whither QFX?

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

QFX - "Freedom" was in my top 100 singles thing that I never bothered posting!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Q-Tex's immortal "Power of love" or the Rhythmic State's "Annihilating Rhythm"? Sweet nostalgia, carry me cross the firth of forth...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 28 March 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

07. Fuck The Millennium

is that the KLF tune? Mad buzz.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 28 March 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what to say.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 28 March 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

QFX - "Freedom"

i'd forgotten all about that one

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been enjoying the hell out of "We Are The Greatest" in the last 48 hours - this is a whole different Scooter, all electro breaks & robotic vocoder voices, and no MC'ing! Wouldn't have been that much out of place on a Ural 13 Diktators disc...

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 30 March 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

They made fun of Helge Schneider :(

New album! Anyone heard this yet?

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I was just listening to weekend. It is very very funny.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 6 January 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

oh man, i had never heard of scooter before when i went to russia for a month in the summer of 1998. but the hosts we stayed with loved it and played it all the time. 'how much is the fish?' was the big hit, and i remember downloading it as soon as i got back home, back in the early days when you had to get mp3's from ftp sites and such. 'our happy hardcore' is also a good one. wow. scooter!

Stingy (stingy), Friday, 6 January 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely dud, but possibly in a classic way.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I love them in much the same way I love Rammstein, but then I'm a sucker for po-faced teutonic seriousness.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 20 January 2008 13:41 (seventeen years ago)

Dude that's up there with French & Saunders' "C'est la Vie" in the "tunes that equal the awesomeness of the genre they're skitting" stakes.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 20 January 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM9ueSWj3ig

If you've never heard that Geir I think you'll like it.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 20 January 2008 13:44 (seventeen years ago)

Audience laughter is bollocks tho.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 20 January 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, the audience laughter is really fucking annoying. As a pastiche I've always thought that song is up there with Neil Innes' Beatles clones.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 20 January 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

I still love this one.

Siegbran, Monday, 21 January 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

It's all about Back in the UK:
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=32H3sOQWaJ0

Once again! We have the plan! Driving you wild! As good as we can!

chap, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

The best bit is where he pops out a doorway at 1.08 and goes "c'mon!".

chap, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

"Fire" is pretty rad. I love the guitar riff in it.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

HARDER FASTER SCOOOOOOTER

kv_nol, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

the new single

Siegbran, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:42 (seventeen years ago)

That scooter skit is brilliant.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

this however is painfully unfunny.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

we played "how much is the fish?" on the lollards of pop two weeks ago --

http://freakytrigger.co.uk/lollards-podcast/2008/01/freaky-trigger-and-the-lollards-of-pop-series-2-week-7/

although apparently we meant to play "does the fish have chips?"!!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

The spoof interview is indeed pretty painful. The should have done s.th. like that tiesto takeoff on youtube where someone put subtitles over an interview he did "I can't beleieve you fuckers still buy this shit - helenekeller can play piano better than me" etc

the music one is funny b/c the lyrics "jesus turning water into ecstacy/st peter is the dj and he's smoking a reefer" aren't far removed from the real thing.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

...pointing out the bleeding obvious being something I'm very good at & all that.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

We were talking about them in the pub the other day. SIBERIA!

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

Does The Fish Have Chips is pretty much exactly 50% Firestarter and 50% Song 2, I admire their brazen theft.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

It's better than both those songs as well. Well, funnier at least.

chap, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

So, new album out with free greatest hits CD attached, number two in the midweeks, Dancing All Over The World - is it any good?

Two titans meet.

Scooter vs. Status Quo.

jim, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

Yes.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 25 September 2008 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

surely you mean "Yeah".

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 25 September 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

YEE-UH!

is what I mean. This appears to have annoyed Gordon Smart, too. good.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 25 September 2008 12:29 (seventeen years ago)

Gordon Smart's annoyed by sitting at the bottom of the charts like a twig.

LBC's Steve Allen good morning I'm afraid (Marcello Carlin), Thursday, 25 September 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

woo. that's very different to the album version.

I can't believe ILX isn't making more of a fuss about this Scooter/Quo thing...

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 10:54 (seventeen years ago)

Well, you know, ILx doesn't seem that interested in pop any more, except the kind of pop that was hip when this thread was started...

Eric in the East Neuk of Anglia (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 11:00 (seventeen years ago)

Francis told me last night: “Quo belong in the charts and playing live gigs. This is a chance for a new generation to hear our music.

“It’s like AEROSMITH getting a kickstart from rappers RUN DMC in the 1980s on Walk This Way.”

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

The band consists of MICHAEL SIMON, HP BAXXTER and RICK J JORDAN.

They sound like a collection of men responsible for this rubbish.

In May MADONNA’s Hard Candy was knocked from the top of the album chart by their CD Jumping All Over The World.

Sounds a bit like another Quo hit, Rocking All Over The World.

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

Hard Candy now going for £4 new in Woolies.

Eric in the East Neuk of Anglia (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

We had more discussion on the new Scooter album on this other thread:
