C90: I Love You Just the Way You Are...

I was hunting for office supplies at the local Staples when Billy Joel's "I Love You Just the Way You Are" came on. It filled the store with blissful melancholy nostalgia, taking me back to the days when my younger doctor-seeing self was soothed and coddled by those particular sounds filed away as Classic Lite Favorites - 10CC's "I'm Not In Love", Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street", Joel's "She's Only a Woman", etc.

What other songs make this list? I'm thinking such a compilation would be quite nice.

"I Wanna Fuck You In The Ass" - The Outhere Brothers

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the hollies - the air that you breathe; bee gees - words, massachusetts, i started a joke; christopher cross (?) - caught between the moon and new york city (theme from arthur); diana ross (?) - endless love; the eagles - desperado; fleetwood mac - dreams.

fritz, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sailing"!

Dan, I thought this'd be more of a Poem-Cees thread.

For the record, any suggestions that are more like Christopher Cross, and less like the Eagles would be most appreciated.

Daver, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait a sec. Is that "Endless Love" song a duet with Kenny Rogers? FOUL!

Daver, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

don henley - boys of summer.

fritz, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what the hell, dave - you're gonna start getting snobby about kenny rogers and the eagles after asking for billy joel and 10-CC soundalikes?

the Kenny Rogers i think you're thinking of is "islands in the stream"

, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

POCO - CRAZY LOVE, GERRY RAFFERTY - RIGHT DOWN THE LINE

Chris, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

then there are those weird songs which were showing up on the un- rock/lite-pop stations by the late 80s/early 90s...george michael's "father figure," fer instance.

joe jackson!

jess, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone ever read that interview with Dianne Warren, where the interviewer asked her what was the rudest song she'd ever written, and she said "Fuck Me In The Ass!", and then she changed her mind and that it was "Fuck Me In The Ass, Baby I Love You!"?

Tim, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and as tim mentioned on the eagles thread: "africa" by toto.

jess, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, the Outhere Bros thing was a knee-jerk reraction to the unmitigated horror that is Billy Joel. I'd have to say that "The Lady In Red" by Christopher Cross is a song I'd include in this category.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr Hook! He owns this thread.

Also, "If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me" (can't remember who that was by, but I bet somebody here knows)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brenda Russell-"Piano in the Dark", Charlie Dore-"Pilot of the Airwaves", Kenny Nolan-"I Like Dreamin'"

Arthur, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bellamy Brothers

Dr. C, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Lady in Red" is by Chris DeBurgh, Dan. And HELL YEAH I'm gonna get snotty about Kenny Rogers & The Eagles!

Shit. "Endless Love" was with Diana Ross and Lionel Richie.

Good songs = "She's Only a Woman", "Stepping Out", "Sailing", "I'm Not In Love". Bad songs = "Desperado", "Ride Like the Wind", "She's Like the Wind", "Islands in the Stream", "Hello". I only wish "I Wanna Fuck You in the Ass" could qualify.

While I'd like to stay in the 70s & early 80s, I have to also confess a weakness for The Jets' "Make It Real", Babyface's "Whip Appeal" and Peabo Bryson's "Can You Stop the Rain". Say it with me, folks - Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeabo.

Daver, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh! AND "Careless Whisper"! George Michael is so dreamy when he's sad and in denial about his sexuality.

Daver, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish I'd been around for this thread earlier, I'm a sucker for this sort of music.

"Jesse" by Joshua Kaddison has to be in there, it's just ultimate local radio music. Maybe some Don McLean, as well, his cover of "Crying" or "Vincent", perhaps.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"So In Love With You" Helen Love

Chris, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kenny Rogers' singles are almost all really great, both the First Edition & the solo stuff. "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" is heartbraking and has a breakbeat. And if you don't like the "Gambler" and "Lucille" why even bother listening to music at all? Plus he looks like a million bucks too - distinguished, authentic & working class - every kid's dream step-father.

fritz, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Captain and Tenille - Do that to me one more time

George Benson - Gimme the night

Jackson Browne - Somebodys Baby

England Dan and John Ford Coley - I'd really love to see you tonight (this is a must)

Henry Gross - Shannon

Chuck Mangione - Feels So good

Chris, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris Rea - "Fool If You Think It's Over"

Player - "Baby Come Back"

Paul, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"somebody's baby" is so sad in fast times at ridgemont high

fritz, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Babys Is'nt it time Gary Wright Dreamweaver Dollar Shooting Star Magna Carta Highway to Spain Manfred mann California Christopher Cross Ride like the wind

Paul, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has someone mentioned Little River Band yet? I wouldn't know because I'm too excited to mention/post "You Can't Change That," a great pre- Ghostbusters Ray Parker Jr. (specifically Raydio) song I rediscovered yesterday.

Andy K, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Daylight Katie by Gordon Lightfoot used to be played on the testcard in the early afternoons. It was especially soothing as it signified that I had been able to fool my Mum and skive school.

Can't remember any other tracks for certain but something in the back of my mind screams "The things we do for love" by 10CC.

Kris England, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael McDonald! Oh, man, One of the first videos I ever saw was "Sweet Freedom" (that song from the _Running Scared_ soundtrack), with him frolicking w/ Billy Crystal & Gregory Hines.

Was "What a Fool Believes" him or the Doobies?

Daver, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beautiful South's 'Song For Whoever'. I once forced myself to stay in a supremarket for three and a half-minutes more in order to listen to it all the way through. Yes, one in five people may well own their greatest hits, but I really don't care. That song is just ace.

Mr Swygart, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't forget Michael McDonald soundalike Robbie Dupree ("Steal Away").

Andy K, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One of the funniest things ever -- the end of the PiL appearance on American Bandstand as rebroadcast on VH1 some years back, Dick Clark announces who'll be after the commercial break and the camera cuts to a clip of Dupree, in pure late seventies duds and mustache, grooving with his band through that very song. Quite the contrast.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

who did the song that starts "Everybody needs a holiday/I heard her say/From each other" circa 1982... sounds a bit like a beegees ballad, but i never knew what it was called or who did it.

dog latin, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The first Beautiful South CD is just unbridled brilliance. It's kind of too bad what happened after that...

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I currently own the Greatest Hits, Blue Is The Colour and Quench. I haven't listened to any of them in an age...

But they were the first band that I actually really, really got into. I can never really hate them, just sort of go off them a bit and reminisce, misty-eyed about Ol' Red Eyes Is Back...

Mr Swygart, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"hello? is it me you're looking for?"... i feel like i've mentioned this song a billion times. it marks the outer limits of my tolerance for sentimental heartache songs and, depending on my mood, falls on different sides of that boundary.

dave k, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is an interesting batch of song titles. Some of them I like a lot, and some of them make me want to turn off the radio/leave the vicinity as quickly a possible. And it's very hard for me to justify why the reactions are one or the other.

DeRayMi, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Stay Awhile"-the Bells
"Haven't Got Time for the Pain"-Carly Simon
"Last Song"-Edward Bear
"Wildfire"-Michael Murphy
"Sometimes When We Touch"-Dan Hill
"Netherlands"-Dan Fogelberg

Arthur, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dog Latin, thats Chicago.

Chris, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We've already gone through most of 10CC's greatest hits, so as an aside, how about "Under Your Thumb" by Godley and Creme? Bit more haunting than their work with 10CC, but it still has that weird... FM haze about it.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Lovely Day' by Bill Withers. Which I initially liked cos it was by a big bloke, called Bill, who had a beard, just like my dad. I was probably about seven or eight at the time... When his voice goes soaring away at the end... ah. There are actually tears in my eyes now. Which is a bit naff, but hey.

Mr Swygart, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stephen Bishop-"On and On"
Rupbert Holmes-"Escape" and "Him"
Maureen McGovern-"The Morning After"
Paul Davis-"Cool Night"
Elvin Bishop-"Fooled Around and Fell in Love"
Melissa Manchester-"Don't Cry Out Loud"

Arthur, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I want Daver to make this tape and end it w/"I Wanna Fuck You in the Ass"

M Matos, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot damn!

Daver, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One time I envisioned Dan as a singer in a boy band with creamy ballads like "Loving That Ass (Is Almost As Good As Loving You)" and "Muffins, Biscuits, Buns."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some of these songs are so depressing. I can't imagine wanting to have them playing softly on the radio all day long as I do office work; and I have heard this sort of music played in that context.

DeRaymI, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If I ever go into pop music, I want Ned to be my manager.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

2 reasons I hate the US Postal Service:

1) Raise the price of stamps ONE MORE TIME BASTARDS.

2) Using a Carly Simon song in their post-9/11 ad campaign. Ugh. Up next - Master P. on behalf of Reading is Fundamental.

Daver, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If I ever go into pop music, I want Ned to be my manager.

Happy to oblige.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Carol King, the queen of Lite FM, has some great songs like You got a friend or So far away. Also include some songs by Cat Stevens.

MICHELINE, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone mentioned Mike & The Mechanics's "The Living Years" yet? Allow me.

Tim, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Jets-"You Got It All " --"you got it all over him"--speaking of creamy ballads, ewwww. Written by none other than Rupbert Holmes!

And no one's mentioned Charlene's "I've Never Been to Me", that's surprising.

Arthur, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YEAR OF THE CAT, KICKS ASS.

Chris, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ladies & Gentlemen, we have almost fully recreated my high school era radio playlist...

and Chris, "It Don't Matter To Me" is the Bread tune of choice for wimp-rock lovers

Paul, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, 'What a Fool Believes' is the Doobies.

'Lucky Stars' - Dean Friedman.

Queen G of the &th Brigade of Inermentalist Post-Surrelaist Scholarasses, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I made this compilation last night for myself. I feel like a middle aged playboy with a leisure suit and a toupee hanging out in the lounge at the Regal Beagle, drinking Tom Collins and waiting for some hot babes.

  3. Christopher Cross - Sailing

    Chris, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a sec. Is that "Endless Love" song a duet with Kenny Rogers? FOUL!

It's not Kenny, it's Lionel Ritchie! I can't believe no one had corrected this yet.

I nominate the one Peter Cetera did, I think it was called "The Glory of Love" but I could be wrong. And how about "Rosanna"?

Nicole, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole, I came correct w/ the Lionel Richie attribution a couple of posts ago. Thanks for gettin' my back, tho!

I'm afraid allowing Toto into this discussion will lead us into Europe and the Styx, and that'd just be WRONG.

What about that Cetera / Chicago song "Oooooooooooo, my love, I really wanna tell you I'm sorry *wah wah-wah wah-wah-wah* but I can NEver let you go-ooooooooooo..."

If Audiogalaxy doesn't cough up the goods once I start compiling a list, I'm going to be quite pissed.

Daver, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

just download winmx Daver, I found them all with no problems.

Chris, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Was there not some Endless Love thing with Mariah Carey and Luther Vandross too? Not that I liked that or anything, I just remember it used to be on all the time in Staples in Croydon...

Mr Swygart, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lionel Richie & B Joel oevure alone could fill a tape (Penny Lover, Easy as Lionel example) Others that got dredged up from my brain On My Own - Patti Labelle & Mike Mcdonald I've been waiting for a girl like you - Foreigner Can't fight this feeling anymore - REO Speedwagon Magic - Olivia Newton John & ELo (Xanadu soundtrack) Joanna - Kool & the Gang Morning TRain - Sheena easton Theme from Mahogany - Diana Ross Theme from Tootsie - Stephen Bishop Nadia's theme

others which i can't remember the name, Steve Perry solo song, he plays a janitor in the video, anything by Ann Murray, and a friend is looking over my shoulder and suggesting "Eye in the Sky" by Alan Parsons Project and "Electric Blue" by Icehouse. You'll have to let us know what makes it onto the final mix

H, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This kind of music is/was a secret pleasure for me and I had no idea anybody else enjoyed it at all. Wow.

To the above list let me add "Just the Two of Us" by Grover Washington Jr with Bill Withers on the vocal.

John Darnielle, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

A bridge between the worlds of lite and classic rock are Steely Dan. "Hey Nineteen" and "Peg" get played on these kind of stations all the time.

Also - no one has mentioned James Taylor! "Fire and Rain" is pretty good.

Mark, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Magic - Olivia Newton John & ELo (Xanadu soundtrack) Oh -- fuck yes. (That's not an ironic fuck yes.)

Has there been a Quiet Storms and/or funk lite thread? If not, here are some favorites from those two categories:

George Benson - Give Me the Night
Lowrell - Mellow Mellow Right On
Kool & the Gang - Summer Madness (ambient prog-soul, as I've claimed elsewhere)
Anita Baker - Sweet Love
Phyllis Hyman - Kiss You All Over
Minnie Riperton - Inside My Love
Mtume - Juicy Fruit
RAMP - Everybody Loves the Sunshine

All I can say about the James Taylor catalog: That is why they hate us.

Andy K, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
all these fantastic songs and no Eric Carmen "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" ... my current favorite 70's soft hit. America really can't be beat either with the likes of "Sister Golden Hair."

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 20:32 (twenty years ago)

All of this stuff ("Wuss rock", as Marge Simpson once identified it) are commonly cited by critics as "the reason punk HAD to happen", and the critics are right on! Which is not to deny that I myself like or love as many of these songs as I hate. I think Poco sucked and Firefall was great and I can't defend either opinion! Nobody mentioned Debbie Boone yet, so I will: Debbie Boone, "You Light Up My Life"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 21:47 (twenty years ago)

What have 10cc done wrong to deserve to get mentioned along with a lot of housewife MOR?

Face it: 10cc were musical geniuses. Their music was way better than all that Michael Bolton/Debbie Boone stuff that seems to dominate the better part of this thread.
