Memphis rappers can't think outside the box: the clubbing and the thugging are rowdy down Memphis way, and for a decade, Three 6 Mafia have been providing the soundtrack for both. A frenetic, fiercely local collective, the six-man group has rarely cared to translate its drawl for outsiders. On Da Unbreakables, it's still preoccupied with round-the-way haters ("Let's Start a Riot," "They Bout to Find Yo Body"); "Testin My Gangsta" is packed tight with belligerence, pairing angry rhymes with rapid percussion and vicious guitar licks lifted from the film The Mack. Three 6 stretch out a bit: "Ridin Spinners," an homage to custom rims, contrasts the urgency of a sample from Eazy-E's anthem "Eazy-Duz-It" with the lethargy of guest rapper Lil Flip, from Houston. But mostly, Unbreakables proves that some parties just don't travel well.

love Project Pat's verse on "Try Something"

thunda lightning (clotpoll), Monday, 12 January 2009 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

this one's 4 the haters:

1. 50 Cent
Get Rich or Die Tryin (Interscope)

What I hate about year-end lists is that the number ones are always these boringly ubiquitous records that everyone already has. But there's a reason that 50's on top - because he deserves to be. Essential tracks: "Poor Li'l Rich," "If I Can't," "U Not Like Me."

2. Lil' Kim
La Bella Mafia (Atlantic)

Where 1996's Hard Core was lush '80s disco and 2000's Notorious K.I.M. employed precocious electro, La Bella Mafia was all twitchy drones, quiet-storm bhangra, and lyrical mastery - and easily Lil' Kim's best album yet. Essential tracks: "Came Back For You," "Get In Touch With Us" feat. Styles P., "Thug Luv" feat. Twista.

3. Bonecrusher
AttenCHUN! (Arista)

Mr. Crusher, the three words that best describe you are as follows, and I quote: crink, crank, crunk!! Essential tracks: "Lock & Load," "Back Up" feat. Dru, "Puttin' In Work" feat. David Banner and Lady Ice.

4. DJ Vlad, Dirty Harry & Green Lantern
2Pac: Rap Phenomenon 2 (Mix)

It's easily the year's best mixtape (though it faced strong competition from Rectangle, Whoo-Kid, Lt. Dan, and Lantern's own incredible Best Of The Lab), but more importantly, in this year of Death Row's awful Nu-Mixx Klazzics and the oddly-subdued Resurrection soundtrack, it's the best Pac album. Essential tracks: "Revolution" feat. Busta Rhymes, "Homeboyz II" feat. Jadakiss, DMX, Butch Cassidy.

5. David Banner
Mississippi: The Album (Universal)

"This for Mississippi... and every place y'all treat like Mississippi... y'all wouldn't give us shit... we gon' take it!" Give your dub-head friend the screwed-and-chopped version for Christmas and keep the real one for yourself. Essential tracks: "Bush," "Fuck 'Em" feat. Pastor Troy and Bonecrusher, "Might Getcha" feat. Lil Jon.

6. T.I.
Trap Muzik (Atlantic)

T.I.'s lyrical documentary of crack-selling and street hustling has a depth of realism not previously explored. ATL's realest lyricist. Incredible beats. Truth. Essential tracks: "T.I. vs. T.I.P.," "Kingofdasouth," "Be Better Than Me."

7. Three 6 Mafia
Da Unbreakables (Sony)

It's true, the Devil has the biggest rims. Essential tracks: "Rainbow Colors" feat. Li'l Flip, "Dangerous Posse," "Testin'," My Gangsta."

8. Bubba Sparxxx
Deliverance (Interscope)

The real message behind the country sonics, I think, is Bubba's ever-referenced "New South" movement, one of the most potentially successful revolutionary sentiments in hip hop today. Athens finally starts to matter. Essential tracks: "New South" feat. Duddy Ken, "Comin' Round," "Back In The Mud."

9. Various Artists
Eastern Conference Allstars III (High Times)

Weathermen
Conspiracy (Eastern Conference)

Token underground pick from the label keeping the ghost of violence, weed and pussy raps over cartoonish beats alive, since Em went goth and the 'Nuts fell off (sorta). Essential tracks: Kool G. Rap & Smut Peddlers' "Talk Like Sex pt. II," Yak & Camu Tao's "Where I Wanna Be," Tame One's "Same As It Ever Was."

10. Fabolous
Street Dreams (Elektra/Asylum)

Of all the real rap CDs this year (Sheek, Noyd, State Property), Fab's had the creamiest hooks ("Into You"), and his follow-up mix (More Street Dreams 2: The Mixtape) was gully pop at its punchliney best. Essential tracks: "I Usually Don't," "Can't Let You Go" (Remix), "Not Give A Fuck."

god scarecrow's verse on "testing my gangsta" is so sick

i think i will vote "bin laden weed" because i love three 6 in slow, mystic, outer limits mode, though there's only one bad song on this album (think i'm gonna relisten this right now)

DECATUR -- The rapper known as Gucci Mane turned himself in Thursday night after a murder warrant was issued for him in a May 10 shooting in which a man later was found dead.

Mane, 25, whose real name is Radric Davis, was notified on Wednesday that he was wanted by DeKalb County authorities for the shooting of Henry Lee Clark, said his Atlanta attorney, Dennis Scheib.

Mane was in New York on Thursday for a show and returned Thursday night, Scheib said. Mane then turned himself in to DeKalb County authorities.

"He said, 'Hey, I'll come down' -- he's not trying to avoid it," Scheib said.

The attorney said the shooting was in self-defense and that Mane was unaware that someone had been injured in the gunfight.

Mane was in a DeKalb County home with a woman on May 10 when five men entered with guns and duct tape, his lawyer said. Mane traded fire with the men, who later fled, Scheib said.

The identities of those men, other than Clark, were unknown.

Associates of Clark, 28, looked for him after he went missing. They found his body in a wooded DeKalb area, and apparently called police.
The arrest could affect Davis' career although it was too early to tell if the repercussions will be negative or positive. In many instances, the profile of stars in the hip hop/rap world is boosted during brushes with the law.

At least two people were holding Gucci Mane posters outside the DeKalb jail as Davis was being escorted in the facility.

Mane is known for several hit songs, including "So Icy," "Trap House" and "Black Tee."

had it on at work the other day and didn't realize that I was semi-audibly mouthing the lyrics the whole time. office is v. quiet and someone tipped me off and I was initially mortified that I was saying the most offensive stuff ever and my co-workers could hear it. was super-relieved to find out that I was indecipherable. http://melantrys.net/wp-includes/images/smilies/new_phew.gif

so anyway, probs my fave three 6 mafia.
