Your disappointments, disgraces, hates rational and irrational and must-switch-offs, if you please...

Tom, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why why why is Ashanti successful? Pink's second single off her album possibly the most sluggish and disappointing followup ever. I am only thinking of pop things right now, but I know there's things I'm forgetting...

Nicole, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All the World Cup songs, Mull Historical Society live, Colin Murray, watching 'ITV at the Festivals 2000' last night and being reminded of how unbearably shite My Vitriol are, the Supernaturals album, The continued rubbishness of the Birmingham indie disco scene, the Von Bondies live, the Hives getting so het up about the whole 'Randy Fitzsimmons' thing, that new Papa Roach single (this is not disappointment, just loathing), 'emo' generally, Pink, Nickelback, Starsailor's general lack of vanishing...

Mr Swygart, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

shoot, I forgot to mention Pink in my mid-year best of. it's fab - ALL OF IT!

I can't think of anything truly bad that I didn't expect to be bad in the first place. But I have no desire to own the Chemical Bros. LP based on what I've heard from it, so I guess that was a disappointment.

Irrational hates: all new guitar bands
Rational hates: Alanis, "Party at the Palace"

Jeff W, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That Libertines mob being hyped at the mo. Hideous.

DG, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have just heard What A Waster and I cannot help but agree. Going Underground but with swearing. Nah.

Mr Swygart, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ashanti must stop recording as soon as humanly possibly.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pah. She is nothing without Ja Rule.

Mr Swygart, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It completely baffles me that Ashanti is at all successful. Especially when the Tweet album is so good, and it's virtually being ignored in place of dull old Ashanti? Is it because the guy in the video has such a cute loveable rogue look? Someone please explain!

I was going to even start a thread about this a while back, but it seemed silly.

Nicole, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

everything british

max, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It completely baffles me that Ashanti is at all successful.

I seem to have missed hearing anything by her. I take it this is a good thing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I suppose I could make a 'worst of' case for the reemergence of Alanis-pop, not only in the form of the gal herself, but in nu-Pink, Michelle Branch, Some Indie Looking Girl I Saw on MTV The Other Day Singing an Alanis-ish Song But More Upbeat and, judging from what I heard 40 seconds ago, the new Shakira single. But none of the above particularly bother me. I can't say I've had any violent HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT reactions for a long while. The steady stream of post-post- grunge grey power ballads aren't able to rouse more than an 'eh' from me, (just about all my friends' swooning to "how you remind me" on the other hand..) and the same goes for recent nut-metal (©Ronan). Oh yes, lest I forget: Anastasia can...eat a dick.

mitch lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Chris Cornell - Rage Against the Machine record. It doesn't get much worse than this.

Yancey, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Adema, Hundred Reasons, Eminem, Antihero, "Get Me Off" by Basement Jaxx... it's been a great year for abject shite.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dj shadow's new album.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the Lauryn Hill album is the biggest load of crap ever, damn near. and the Wilco album BLOWS: whiny mumblemouth who-cares singing- songwriting w/random laptop bloops over wake-me-when-yr-finished gtr- band crapola. WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS SHIT?!?!

M Matos, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wilco = lost in the haze

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This just in: Jeff Tweedy stole Matos' parking spot two years ago.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This just in: Matos roomed with Jay Farrar at basketball camp.

J Blount, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lauryn Hill depressed me into not buying any records for two weeks. It was going to be forever, but I lapsed.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst of?

The return of the unbearable Eminem - 9 year old kids around the UK unite and whisper some of the more risque lyrics behind the bike sheds at school. Meanwhile American white middle class 'homies' suddenly think gay bashing is 'kinda cool if you don't, like you know, mean it and stuff'.

Hearing The Streets - urgh. The lead singer is an ugly, useless bastard and his voice is thick Burmy - who wants to hear that?

Nickleback get UK radio play. What IS the world coming to?

Pop Idol - the lot of them, especially the bastard who covered 'Light my Fire'. Tosser.

The Royal Gala Concert (see my other thread).

Kylie's arse - very VERY cute I agree: but front page news? Puh-lease.

Ant and Dec - I usually love a great big pair of tits, but this even turns me off.

Primal Scream ask Kate Moss to contribute vocals on their forthcoming LP. Now, Bobby, for someone who likes to take the moral higher ground, must I remind you that Mrs Moss was recently pictured earing a fur coat? THE MURDERING EVIL WHORE WITCH!

That's all for now (I think).

Calum Robert, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Total Crap try these for starters: Puddle of Mudd, Hundred Reasons, Cooper Temple Clause, Haven, Nickelback, The Electric Soft Parade, Oasis, Stereophonics, Travis, Badly Drawn Boy, Gomez, Papa Roach, Mushroomhead and new Prodigy single

Prize award for total bullshit ! the libertines - f-ing more inept than Shed soddin Seven and more useless than Smash and These Animal men! Only the crappy NME could support such a backward gormless guitar band.

No wonder Brit bands sell naff all in US ! this mob deserve to be sunk in the Atlantic - to safeguard national pride ! an embarrassment to Britain !

The Libertines appear to be the next big thing. Well if you've been suckered into it all already you'll think they're the best thing since sliced bread. Well I'm here to inform you of the truth. Yes they're everything the NME said they are apart from good. To me it sounds like a bunch of kids fucking about, swearing and making average indie guiatr music. You won't find a more accurate review I'm sure. Fortunately cos of the language this probably won't get any radio play which has to be a good thing. The best thing you could say about this is that it sounds like a bad Jam B side which is too far much of a compliment. Brian here thinks it sounds like a bad Squeeze .....how cool is that?

DJ Martian, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this just in: Matos has EARS

M Matos, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is the new Prodigy single really bad? I've always had a soft spot for them, thought "Fat of the Land" was sort of like "Billion Dollar Babies" for teenie E-gulpers

John Darnielle, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am the only person in the world who likes the new Prodigy single, apparently.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

agree~~~all the World Cup songs

inn, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Heheh.. Phil @ Norman Records does the best reviews.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You might not be alone, Dan, I just need to hear the damn thing first.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Matos = insane? Nah...I like the Wilco a lot but I can see why someone wouldn't. I actually don't mind the new DJ Shadow, either, so...

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am the only person in the world who likes the new Prodigy single, apparently.

Make room, Dan, cause I like it, too. Mind you, it took me a few listens to get into it. I only hope the rest of the CD measures up.

You might not be alone, Dan, I just need to hear the damn thing first.

Ned, I'd sent the link (to hear it) to you from Saturday, I believe. Trawl through your inbox.

Nichole Graham, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*ahem* To answer, Tom, currently a definite switch-off is the "Eminem Show" by the lad parents and congressmen love to hate. I admit, I tried it...and had to toss it against the wall. (Thank god it bounced off, as my mate would have been pretty pissed.)

Nichole Graham, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't hate _The Eminem Show_, but it certainly didn't live up to how I felt about "Without Me".

Dan Perry, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole sez the Eminem Show is good shockah!

Not quite sure how this happened, because I've always been really annoyed by him: his screechy, whiny voice (not to mention all of the overblown baggage and media coverage, such a bore and a turnoff) I never really thought I'd get past. Even though I don't think his voice has really changed much, it doesn't grate on my nerves like it did before. Can't really explain why this is. I was trying to work out why I like this album so much yesterday when I was driving and I got so distracted that I missed my turn. So I can't really tell you why I like it, but I like it.

This is sort of my "What I thought would be the worst of, but surprisingly is not" post.

Nicole, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
oh, can't forget that fucking horrible "Hero" song by Chad Kroger featuring Josey Scott. Who? Exactly
