Sorry if this album's been mentioned already. Bought this recently and I must say it's excellent (in most places). It's like Pavement but not quite like them which is definitely a good thing and Malkmus's songwriting seems to have matured even further.

Opinions?

dog latin, Sunday, 22 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

heard this playing in smallfish the other day. was pretty surprised in that it actually seemed ok. but find it difficult to care about malkmus these days. his best days are long gone (wowee zowee was the last decent pavement record no?)

dog latin? didn't you used to frequent the old warp records message board, before they took it down?

gareth, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes I did (a bit too often)... who were you on that? They've got a new one up now btw, although the people on there get pretty anal at times. I haven't heard Wowee Zowee properly so Crooked Rain is my fave, but I never saw what was so wrong with the last two Pavement albums even though they get slated quite a lot.

dog latin, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I guess the lack of interest kinda sums up latter day Pavement and the Malkmus album - duller than dull. You'll be able to pick up the album in a bargain bin near you VERY soon.

Dr. C, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's a good album. I liked it.

james e l, Monday, 23 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

dog latin. i was just me. ie. gareth. but i didn't post very often. new warp board is boring

gareth, Tuesday, 24 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

gareth: yes it is a bit. I was a right pest on the old board and people on the new board still hate me for it even though i don't post that regularly nor do i plug my stuff any more... Someone started an "I hate Dog Latin" thread... what a nice thing to do. Needless to say, i was touched.

dog latin, Tuesday, 24 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Haven't heard the album, but I saw him play to a tiny crowd last month when I was in the States. It was very like the last time I saw Pavement - for the first few songs, you think it's fantastic. What seems like two hours later, you're just thinking "piss off"...

Paul Steeples, Wednesday, 25 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Slanted and Enchanted was too good at the time, personally I've been incapable of listening to anything they did since. Maybe it's was the drummer's influence.

edde (edde), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 16:17 (seventeen years ago) link

edde, if you had your druthers, what kinda record would you like to see SM make next? (no sarcasm/snark intended, this is a serious question)

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

more like the 1st.
and a bit of the 3rd.
i didn't mind that one, so much.
so, i guess optimum SM would be a combo of 1+3.
i'm not so into his prog leanings, which Pig Lib seemed to ooze.
truth be told, i just listened to all of SM's stuff Vs. SS's.
and as much as people moan about PSoI, it's way more consistent
and (to me) interesting than SM's stuff. now, that first SM album
seems like a continuation of Terror Twilight but more light hearted.
and Church On White will always kill me!

edde (edde), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 17:11 (seventeen years ago) link

has anyone waded through the boards to find the available recordings of new material?

mizzzell (mizzzell), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 23:36 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG MALK @ IRVING FRI! WITH JANET!

If you fuck with Jimmy Mod, you call down the thunder (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 23:50 (seventeen years ago) link

i saw them last month at bimbos w/ janet on skins... she is like 100 times sweeter than that last putz (obviously) but I think they need to ditch "the other guy" and just be a trio - steve and his two ladies. he doesn't really add anything (other than cowbell) and is a total dork.

at least two of the new songs they played sounded like the doors to me. i can't decide if that's a good thing.

tk (tk), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the new stuff is gonna be harder-hitting, mostly cuz Janet's in the group. There's this fantasy floating around in my head where SM doesn't release anything in 2007 THEN BUSTS OUT IN 2008 WITH A 2XCD 24-SONG MONSTER

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 8 February 2007 12:39 (seventeen years ago) link

'pig lib' is still sitting on my cd rack waiting to be downloaded onto i-tunes. i'm angry with it for sucking and it can bask in the unceremonious company of all the other hapless records that didn't make the cut.

Let's turn this thread into a "SM + Jicks Covers Album Wishlist":

1. The Zombies "Time of the Season"
2. Yoko Ono "Walking on Thin Ice"

3. Status Quo "Down Down"
4. Ian Dury "Sex and Drugs and Rock'n'Roll"

Good interview but interjections like this remind me why I hate (music) journalism:

In the time of Ke$ha and Katy Perry, in the post-empire era of the music-industrial complex, when radio has become the horse-drawn carriage of the Information Age, songs no longer “mean a lot when songs are bought.”

What does this even mean?

o. nate, Friday, 5 August 2011 19:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I think he's trying to say that it doesn't matter as much as it used to to get a song on the radio.

I don't want anybody to get hurt.
I can just see the two factions healing their schism

They've been looking for revenge since '92

i'm only half-listening to this but this is real clean sounding - the short track lengths and the lightness of his vocals give it this real airy feel. it's all very agreeable, this sounds like the style i want malk to be going for at this stage in his career. i think i'm going to like this

I think that on some level, when they came out I thought both RET and Wag Out were a bit too silly or goofy, somehow.

I do like jammy Malkmus tho

leaning into the jams is what makes it so great

ufo, Tuesday, 27 February 2024 21:51 (seven months ago) link

it was startling recently to pull out Real Emotional Trash and Wig Out and feel, finally, like I fully *got* those albums. Everything kinda clicked.

that happened to me with Wig Out recently too. I'd always thought of it as a lesser retread of Mirror Traffic, but for now I'd rather listen to that than MT. Sparkle Hard felt like a huge step up from both of them though. The S/T and Pig Lib are probably always going to be my favorites for sentimental reasons, but Sparkle Hard is my non-sentimental favorite.

also iirc Justine was almost a Jick circa 2001 (to replace Heather or Mike?)

steve and justine played a lot of ping pong on lollapalooza, according to a don't-you-wish-this-was-salacious-because-their-haircuts-and-coolness-match spin or alternative press article i read at the time. their x cover of unheard music is an interesting study of contrasts, it reminded me at the time of the gainsbourg duets in its "why am i even singing this" lazy dude singing with an earnest yet ultimately unknowable hot chick. a romcom with them and damon - i'd half watch it, i admit. unheard music doesn't really fit into either elastica or pavement's discography, although i think i have it in my mp3 collections as a pavement middle era nonlp track and it adds some pep to the turgid brighten the corners b-sides.

mig (guess that dreams always end), Wednesday, 29 May 2024 20:34 (four months ago) link

I really like the X cover – I think SM says somewhere how Los Angeles is one of his favorite records

The gossip is not that interesting, but I remember this era of music fondly, as it was the beginning of my formative years of listening and reading about music, so I found the clip today and was just remembering about it! The first time I remember hearing Pavement when I must have been about 17 or 18, I was struck by how sloppy and skew-whiff it all sounded. I don't hear it half as much in the music any more - it all sounds quite well played and structured. But what was it they were doing, specifically, that made me think this?
