For some reason I really feel the need to hear Love Burns at the moment, and I have no idea why...

Mr Swygart, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr Swygart are you my alter ego? I noticed you posted a Mull Historical Society thread and now this? Seems we have the same taste, much to probably most people dismay on this board.

Chris, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

god that was awful. much to probably most people dismay I never said I was an English major.

Chris, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thing is, I dunno whether I actually like them or not... Whatever Happened to My Rock 'N' Roll is fantastic, but the album... I dunno. It's a bit... drudgey. If you know what I mean. It just seems to go on, and on, and never quite gets anywhere... that said, I don't honestly dislike them either.

Though they cannot do song titles for shit.

Mr Swygart, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the album could do without a few songs.

Chris, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I ignored the hype until about a month ago, when I heard LoveBurns on the radio.I went and bought it,and I love it.Killer tunes.

dek1, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Predictably I think they're dud - really leaden and useless. Can't imagine why anyone would want to listen to them, really.

Tom, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

read mojo review of them live -- far too loud -- isn't that just dumb -- who are they to impose damage on their innocent enthusiatic paying audience ?

perhaps if blinded during a motorcycle accident they might appreciate how important hearing actually is, but since they don't care they're thugs who don't give a damn about you -- if you can get close enough then gob them -- isn't their stance so backwards, so dumb ? these pricks casually regularly inflict permanent hearing damage on "friends" -- they've just got to be too dumb if they're doing this

reject thuggery in rock music -- NOT COOL, JUST STUPID -- eg mixing guys who've lost their hearing so they want you to lose yours too -- sack these old school morons or better, give them some of their own medicine

George Gosset, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's like Tom read my mind... I dunno if they suck more or less than the Hives... damm it's just too tough to call!

Andrew L, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well George, presumably they're inflicting the same kind of damage on their own hearing (eg Pete Townsend, Roger Miller), making it more of a communal masochistic experience - an orgy of tinnitus? And if you go to a gig by a group called BRMC, surely you sorta know what you're in for?

Andrew L, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They're worse than the Hives cos I can't imagine a BRMC backing track making a good bootleg.

Tom, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they're too dumb to learn from others mistakes or they think it couldn't happen to them, on a motorcylce or else where

but, even if their name is toungue in cheek, or just because of the J&MC cool dark trappings, they _will_ fuck up innocent curious young people interested in y'know, whatever

just because they're naive doesn't mean these wanna-be-cool concert- going youngsters deserve permanent hearing damage from lazy sleazy (but hey, tounge in cheek !!) cynical misanthropists, and that's before the kids even start to take the music seriously and get even more screwed up -- i mean they won't even be able to hear the important lyrics properly with just a dry run at the gig

George Gosset, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The unifying characteristics of all the nu-NME wave of bands is this: they all try too hard to sound like they're not trying at all.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To create the BMRC experience at home, put Love and Rockets' "Motorcycle" on an infinite loop. But subtract the raunch.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taken in bursts I think they can really impress but after a while sludgey is probably an accurate description. Far, far too serious as well.

Bill, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They're definitely worse than the Hives, based on my mixtape method of judging songs. I put Love Burns & Hate to Say I Told You So on a mix cd that I brought on my trip this week, and I've been skipping over the BRMC song way more than the Hives one, although the ending of the Hives song is murder on my ears with my lousy little headphones, and I'm too embarrassed to walk around with my good (but huge) headphones on.

The BRMC album feels really flat- I listened to it at least 4 times, trying to differentiate the songs, but they kind of all blurred together.

lyra in seattle, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the important thing people are missing here is the fact that the BMRC, for all their sonic sludge (which I dig plenty), can not write especially interesting lyrics. They're not actively bad, but they rarely have anything especially interesting to say that would (pick one: justify/complement) the murky drone of the music. "Spread your love like a fever"? "You can kiss my love and I wish you're gone "? I mean, look at 'em.

They also sing about Jesus a lot.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they're too dumb to learn from others mistakes or they think it couldn't happen to them, on a motorcylce or else where

George, this is perhaps the best thing you've ever written - amazing.

Clarke B., Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Spread your love like a fever': VDs?

Barnaby, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I actually really like them. Shows what I know. :-\

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

I feel like I should like them, and when I'm actualy listening to them I think, "Gee, this is a nice song." But 15 minutes later, I forget what they sounded like. Their music evaporates like that for me.

So for me, they're a dud.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Heard "Stop" on the radio the other day and downloaded the album from Ruckus. I really like it. But maybe I'm just like that.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 17 October 2006 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

i really don't understand why they get so much crap. i like 'em.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't call them classic by any stretch of the imagination, but I find them enjoyable enough as compared to a lot of the stuff making the rounds in the indie world recently.

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

the second album was way lame

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 05:11 (nineteen years ago)

The singles of the first album were good, though I'm not sure about the other songs from it. Last year's country album was simply boring and uninspiring.

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 06:41 (nineteen years ago)

i liked the country album.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 07:27 (nineteen years ago)

I'm waiting until Fopp has the Howl album for £5 or less...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

their firt album is very classic, not a bad song on it

maarten maes (dice collective), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 09:06 (nineteen years ago)

Back in the day, when D/l meant "oo, free records", their first was one that was worth the money.

Ooh, I mean I liked it very much!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

the first one was really solid actually
the second one was terrible
the latest one, howl, was pretty enough, but doesn't have enough depth for repeated listens

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

the singles where they're ripping off Love & Rockets: C
everything else: D

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

their songs are coated in a thick layer of studio polish, which is unbecoming for music of this ilk. it is ok, and often beneficial, for other musics, but not when your aim is to sound scuzzy/trashy/dirty etc. hard to figure out why they apply this treatment to their songs (not that I think there's anything particularly compelling underneath, mind) and its equally hard to figure out why they are still described as scuzzy/trashy/dirty etc. by many, when this is thoroughly over-polished, clean music.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

It reminds me of Automatic-era JAMC, which I like.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 17 October 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

I always did like Whatever Happened to My Rock 'N' Roll, though for some reason they felt the need to tack on an overlong crashy ending to an otherwise concise and catchy song. Everything else I heard was sort of alright but dull and obvious.

clotpoll (Clotpoll), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently you can polish a turd.

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

Overlong crashy ending was nicked off Can's "Future Days" album.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 18 October 2006 07:44 (nineteen years ago)

four years pass...

Wow, this band is so marginalized there's not even discussion on ILM about their last couple of albums? Not that they're genius or anything. Actually, "Baby 81" was really weak but "Beat The Devil's Tattoo" was solid if a bit of a retread.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 17 March 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

I only have their first album. it is good.

in my world of suggest bans (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 17 March 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

I like the moodier stuff on the 1st LP best. "Rifles", "Awake", "As Sure As The Sun"...

blank, Friday, 18 March 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

people really do hate them dont they.
however, i just know that when beat .. drops to a fiver in fopp i will buy it.
they are one of those type of bands.
i wont deny that there are some days when i really like their monochromatic mood-n-groove, but do i actually need to have another album ?

mark e, Friday, 18 March 2011 09:47 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

Maybe I finally grew more tolerant of these guys that the news of a new album actually kinda interests me. At least just to play as background music, like I'm doing right now -- new album streaming in full

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 March 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

Actually maybe not in full, but definitely a number of tracks. Kinda sounding a little late 90s Verve at points (definitely with some of the vocals) with slightly more gazeyness. Hmm.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 March 2013 16:37 (twelve years ago)

blimey - never expected that from you ned.
despite the fact the cover has some colour on it (ooooohhh .. ), i'll still be getting it ..

mark e, Saturday, 16 March 2013 17:19 (twelve years ago)

four years pass...

i know this corner of the wire hate this band.
however, the new album is a bit of a grower.
oh and peaky blinders vs BRMC = AV perfection.

mark e, Thursday, 1 March 2018 22:46 (seven years ago)

"Echo" off the new one is a lovely song.

Simon H., Friday, 2 March 2018 03:27 (seven years ago)

The first album is a perfect amalgam of their influences and the post-punk revival of 2001, it has aged well. The second is basically the same, just less memorable. The third, "Howl", is a band taking chances - an acoustic blues set that's really great. After that they went back to recycling themselves and I lost interest.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 2 March 2018 14:46 (seven years ago)

I like the new album! I almost posted about it in an "embarrassing confessions" thread that I think was active here a few weeks ago but can't find now. I don't think I could mount a defense of this band -- in fact I'd probably concede every criticism in this thread -- but I thoroughly enjoy their first three records. Pretty much concur with GMBB's assessment above. I continued to follow them after Howl but nothing they've done since has held my interest until the new one. The one exception being "All You Do is Talk" from Baby 81 -- I still play that song constantly and find it oddly emotionally affecting for reasons I don't understand.

Highly recommended if you like this sound: second album from Chile's La Hell Gang, Thru Me Again.

early rejecter, Friday, 2 March 2018 15:58 (seven years ago)

I heard “Awake” on the radio for the first time in 15 years or so and was surprised by how much I liked it.

JoeStork, Friday, 2 March 2018 17:08 (seven years ago)

well i never.
i am not totally alone.
'baby 81' is the forgotten child of their catalogue.
i f&ckin love it.

mark e, Friday, 2 March 2018 20:57 (seven years ago)

Awake fucking rules!!
