Hardware synths are superior to softsynths.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 08:11 (seventeen years ago)

^should be another option? There are so many confusing distinctions between analog, digital, hardware, and software, I've given up trying to keep track of what's what. I long for the good old days when a Moog was a Moog and this digital nonsense was the stuff of science fiction. Option #5 it is.

Are we supposed the pick the best or the worst statement?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

The truest

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

But none of these are true.

chap, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

Indeed, none of these are true in any generalisable sense. I went for 'analogue synths are better than digital synths', even though I play and love many digital synths, simply because the middle options are rubbish and don't even resemble anything approaching true. Thinking about it, I should have gone for 'handmade instruments are superior to mass-produced instruments', as this would suggest stuff like 'the tannerin is better than a guitar', or 'the car-horn organ is better than a saxophone', statements with which I agree wholeheartedly.

Indeed, none of these are true in any generalisable sense.

I don't know about other instruments but my experience with smaller-shop acoustics (eg Larrivee) vs. touted machine-intensive ones (recent Guilds) suggests that yes, "handmade" (deceptive term, nobody's carved a neck without some machine assistance in eons) acoustics are still many many degress better than their mass-market cousins, which, don't get me wrong, are much better for touring

J0hn D., Tuesday, 13 January 2009 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah, will go for that one.

A bit how I like multitrack recording wavs, and not Midi tracks.

Mark G, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

I read some shit about how the new stylophone is a pale imitation of the old one. Jesus they sound as annoying as each other, get real.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

The acoustic stylophone was better

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

Nothing sounds as magical as a cello.

The latter is true. Not because they are more "authentic", but because they sound better. They sound more like synths, and not like everything else. :)

:)

THE SUGGEST BANS! THEY DO NOTHING!! (PappaWheelie V), Saturday, 17 January 2009 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

What is stupid, though, is to claim that analog synths with actual oscillators sound better than virtual analog synths or softsynths. There are actually hardly any differences in the actual sound at all.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 17 January 2009 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

A soundhole just puts artificial distance between you and the music. The only real way to experience guitar music is to have strings attached to your body.

ichard Thompson (Hurting 2), Saturday, 17 January 2009 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

the only one of these I accept is the last one, and that could easily change once digital synths actually get designed to do something more interesting than what they currently do

Courtney Love's Jew Loan Officer (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 17 January 2009 00:44 (seventeen years ago)

"Unamplified acoustic instruments are superior to amplified acoustic instruments." is the only one with any truth in it, if only for those awful squaky piezo electric pickups that most acoustic guitarists use live.

I miss one option here: "Vinyl > CD"
