I woke up and screamed FUCK THE WORLD

my life is ronan! (The Reverend), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

"Anthology". Because it is The Beatles. And because those songs were better than anything from 1995, even in terribly unfinished versions. Plus "Free As a Bird" is way better than its reputation.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

Makin' sweet love 'til morning comes
Still lovin' you after it's said and done
And doin' those things you want me to do to you baby
Like goin' down on you by the fireplace
Baby don't hold back the feelin'
Just bring that body to me
And I'm gonna give you everything you need

I can't betray my 12 year old self and NOT vote Mellon Collie.

R. L. Stinebeck (John Justen), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

Christ, what an awful year.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

just noticed: TWO disney soundtracks?

Gukbe, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

my life is ronan! (The Reverend), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

i still <3 u, alanis.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

Mellon Collie. A single disc version would be SP's best album. This has been proven by science.

ilxor, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

At least 13 of these have songs I like on them.

You're so fair!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:56 (seventeen years ago)

1995 is like MIDNINETIES INDIE ROCK & THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH IT ESTABLISHED A FOOTHOLD

J0hn D., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

Conditions like Dogg Pound and Bone Thugs?

The Reverend, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

in seriousness tho guyz the answer is Friday (soundtrack). Read it and weep:

1. Friday - Ice Cube
2. Keep Their Heads Ringin' - Dr. Dre
3. Friday Night - Scarface
4. Lettin' Niggas Know - Threat
5. Roll It up, Light It up, Smoke It Up - Cypress Hill
6. Take a Hit - Mack 10
7. Tryin' to See Another Day - The Isley Brothers
8. You Got Me Wide Open - Bootsy Collins/Bernie Worrell
9. Mary Jane - Rick James
10. I Wanna Get Next to You - Rose Royce
11. Superhoes - Funkdoobiest
12. Coast II Coast - Tha Alkaholiks
13. Blast If I Have To - EA Ski
14. Hoochie Mama - The 2 Live Crew
15. I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Roger

Does any other album on this list have as many good songs? Obviously no.

J0hn D., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

those are nice Rev, do they really counter that awful Halen album & Live & the Michael Jackson "Greatest" that's comprised mainly of late stuff & Alice in Chains & Cracked Rear View & Jagged Little Pill? no my friend they do not. they are oases.

J0hn D., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:13 (seventeen years ago)

seriously one mix CD from this list, correctly sequenced and deployed under the right conditions, could make a high-level operative tell you where Osama's hiding

J0hn D., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

Bone Thugs, shit year, Beatles excluded from contention due to Beatles.

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

I'll rep for "You Aughta Know" and maybe a couple other Alanis tracks and a good-sized chunk of History.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:18 (seventeen years ago)

bruce greatest hits

Lemonade In Hammocks (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

I'll join you on big parts of History but ooh man do I hate me some Jagged Little Pill and consider it like the worst shit ever

except for maybe the chorus of "Hand in Pocket," I can dig that I guess

J0hn D., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

Dangerous Minds - Soundtrack

ill vote for this on the strength of gangstas paradise

8====D ------ ㋡ (max), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

The Reverend, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

Thug Life, bitchez. Ugh, dreadful year for #1s (except for Pac obv)

(Pillboxxx) (Pillboxx) (Pillbox), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't see the Friday tracklist until after I'd voted/posted. I'd still go for MATW, but that is a fine tracklist.

Dangerous Minds - Soundtrack

I'll vote for this on the strength of 24-K's "Don't Go There."

Eric H., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

ha, this was right around when i started listening to music. mellon collie, i guess.

tired (latebloomer), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 02:34 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Garth Brooks.

I'll vote for this on the strength of 24-K's "Don't Go There."

Wow. Now THAT'S a song I haven't heard in awhile! All I remember is "Eeeny meenie miney moe. We've come to let you know. 24K's on the go." and "Oh no wait a minute. Don't go there [something something]"

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 03:29 (seventeen years ago)

xp selena album is great, too btw

xhuxk, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 03:32 (seventeen years ago)

I'm looking at the list and, fuck me, Mellon Collie in the biggest fucking landslide known to man (MJ and Broooooooce excepted cause, you know, they're greatest hits records and shit). Who gives a fuck about Bone Thugs 'n Harmony in this day and age? When was the last time anybody heard a Dogg Pound CD? "Gangsta's Paradise"? The worst Alice in Chains album?? "I'll Make Love to You" (I swear to God that song was played on MTV ALL THE FUCKING TIME when it came out)? Pink Floyd at their boring-as-hell Dave-Gilmour-plus-tons-of-session-musicians worst???

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 03:39 (seventeen years ago)

MCatIS >>>> Hootie > Alanis > the rest

:(((((((

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

Selena, clearly:

Moka, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 03:46 (seventeen years ago)

I will rep for Bone Thugs til I die, who still make decent albums on reduced budgets and whose single "I Tried" a couple of years ago was straight up BEAUTIFUL.

J0hn D., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 03:52 (seventeen years ago)

i cant believe dogg pound hit #1 -- album is awesome but totally forgotten now -- i guess it was just continued strength of snoop??

anyway i cant believe j0hn d. didnt vote for tupac. i voted for bone thugs but it should have been pac. anyway imo most of this stuff is great -- i havent heard garth brooks and im sure the lion king soundtrack is pretty zzz, no idea what Live sound like but the rest is either old dudes (some of whom are dope i.e. springsteen) or great rap or great R&B or good rock music (alice in chains ftw) and of course ughlanis morissette <<<<-see what i did there

xhuxk d (deej), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 03:52 (seventeen years ago)

I love 2pac but "Me Against the World" isn't my favorite at all - if I was feeling sentimental I'd probably vote for him anyway. And "Keep Their Heads Ringin" on that Friday soundtrack, and 'Face, and the Isleys. And Rose Royce! If I had that soundtrack right now, you know what I'd do? Play it, that's what

J0hn D., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 03:59 (seventeen years ago)

have always hated the shit out of Alice in Chains though, it's that sound/style that makes me remember '95 with dread and fear

J0hn D., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 04:00 (seventeen years ago)

All the song-songs from Lion King are great (Elton falling into the dope old guys category), but it's padded out with stuff from the score.

(fuck yeah I had that tape and rocked the fuck outta it)

The Reverend, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 04:04 (seventeen years ago)

Snrub, you don't remember "who's the ho? Your mama mama! Who's the ho? Your main thang!"

Eric H., Wednesday, 14 January 2009 04:05 (seventeen years ago)

Despite all my rage, I am still just a critic in a cage.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 04:34 (seventeen years ago)

All the song-songs from Lion King are great (Elton falling into the dope old guys category)

Always wondered what he was falling into on this.

da croupier, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

EJ fell face-first into a saccharine dungheap.

to REMIND YOU

Eazy, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 09:23 (seventeen years ago)

I feel really bad voting Pumpkins before noticing I could have voted something that had Tha Liks on it.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

i cant believe dogg pound hit #1 -- album is awesome but totally forgotten now -- i guess it was just continued strength of snoop??

i remember it being a pretty big deal and carrying a lot of momentum from Doggystyle the same way the first G-Unit album carried a lot of momentum from the Get Rich. also probably the biggest rap lyric controversy firestorm since either 2 Live Crew or "Cop Killer," got delayed a few months and built up anticipation. i also remember seeing the "New York, New York" video all the time but having no real idea about east coast/west coast beef or what it was about.

some dude, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

Normally I'd vote for AIC, but that album really is turd.

chap, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

What a strange list. The things I'm most inclined to vote for are greatest hits albums but I don't want to do that. I wasn't paying very much attention to big pop culture in 1995 and I guess I didn't miss much great music by doing so.

Euler, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for HISstory, reluctantly. Thanks for the memories.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 22 January 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

What a crap list.

Joe, Thursday, 22 January 2009 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 23 January 2009 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

I blame the Mariah vote on Surmounter, and the fourteen votes for the Pumpkins on Ned.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 23 January 2009 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Bless your hearts for voting Alanis. Memorable isn't she?

u s steel, Friday, 23 January 2009 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

she's terrific.

Ioannis, Friday, 23 January 2009 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

smashing pumpkins over tupac

you people are insane

J0hn D., Friday, 23 January 2009 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

^^^word.

Ioannis, Friday, 23 January 2009 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

Ick. And also, this is not a good Michael Jackson album. I know that half of it is previous hits, but the new stuff comes as close as possible to actually cancelling them out.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 23 January 2009 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

You are rong for at least this much reasons.

1. "Scream" (Harris/Lewis/Jackson/Jackson) – 4:38
2. "They Don't Care About Us" (Jackson) – 4:44
3. "Stranger in Moscow" (Jackson) – 5:44

(note: I'm not going to defend those particular lines on track 2, but it is otherwise pretty damn awesome)

The Reverend, Saturday, 24 January 2009 07:19 (seventeen years ago)

"Stranger in Moscow" might be one of his best ballads ever.

Eric H., Saturday, 24 January 2009 07:36 (seventeen years ago)

^^^

I'm trying to think of what tops it in that department and only coming up w/ "Human Nature" and "I Can't Help It"

The Reverend, Saturday, 24 January 2009 07:43 (seventeen years ago)

There should be an Alanis Morissette novelty weather barometer where, if it's going to rain, she comes out in a wedding dress, but if everything's going to be fine, she comes out with one hand in her pocket and the other one giving a high five.

moley, Saturday, 24 January 2009 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

what the fuck

CLAPSOCK (John Justen), Saturday, 24 January 2009 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha

I'll add "The Lady In My Life" to my list of MJ ballads.

The Reverend, Saturday, 24 January 2009 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

I like the symmetry of:

I voted for Garth Brooks.
