I think it was a great year, like every other, but then again idgaf about important albums everyone's supposed to care about.

I like 2008. The late 00'ies was a weird time, Brooklyn indie taking over, hiphop being in kind of a slump, dubstep having it's moment before it went wobbly. The biggest albums from that time probably came out in 2007 or 09, but 08 was the year of:

It feels like a freer year than the ones surrounding it.

When P4k (I know, I know) did their giant reader-vote list 'best albums of the website's era' things in (what?) 2012 or so, it was v noticable that 2008 had fewer records represented.

Most of the things people have listed as being counter arguments I've not heard of, and judging by that (and the names) I'm assuming they're metal. Which means if you don't like metal, it sucked.

I forgot the last Portishead album came out that year, I think many of us could agree that's a good record?

And yeah one of the benefits of being into metal is that the sheer volume of the stuff that comes out means that there's at least a few gems every year, or maybe I just have low standards lol

None of what I listed is metal.

For me there were lots of good records in 2008 but not many great ones, compared to '06 or '07.

I did a year-by-year 2000s retrospective a couple years ago and I remember 2008 was the toughest one. I would suspect most ILM posters could do enough research to make any year sound amazing but a good year for music would require less effort.

No Age "Nouns" is still probably my favorite album of the last 10 years and it's a 2008 record. I love "Third" and "808s and Heartbreak" and "The Carter 3." Of course there were great records that year, but a solid year for music needs more than just a few great records.

2008 was a great year for rap wtf

of course at the time critics only cared about stupid shit, but this was arguably the best year of gucci's career, + incredible releases by Max B, Boosie, Jacka, Jeezy (arguably his best album), Z-Ro, etc etc etc

fuckin Tha Carter III was 2008! dunno why i always have such a hard time remembering stuff that came out this year.

Third was (still is) great, and there were a few good (if unspectacular) records. I loathe Vampire Weekend with every fibre of my being.

All this thread is doing is essentially confirming to me that 2008 was the weakest year of that decade.

Every decade has one notable year which isn't as great as the others: in the '70s it was 1974. In the '80s it was 1988. In the '90s it was 1990. In the '10s so far it has been 2014. 2008 was probably worse than any of those, though.

I can't remember the names of most of the records or where I put them, remembering the year is some advanced behaviour

I know where they are, they are on that side of the room. But any particular record is a problem, a few of them have definitely escaped. I swear one of the neighbours has a few of them

damn well that's fucking interesting, then again it's probably a case of point of entry - Alegranza! was the first thing I heard by him (iirc it's his debut), and I played it a lot in the two or so years leading up to his next record. It just didn't click.

Agree about 1990; definitely don't agree about 1988... Spirit of Eden, Nation of Millions, Daydream Nation, Surfer Rosa, Isn't Anything, Sixty-Nine, Long Live the Kane, Blue Bell Knoll, Bug, Strictly Business, Nothing's Shocking, Green, South of Heaven, Critical Beatdown, Follow the Leader... I'd go for '83 or maaaybe '89 if I had to pick a dud year from the '80s.
