OK then I will:

Ansur - Warring Factions
Combat Astronomy - Dreams No Longer Hesitate
Cynic - Traced in Air
Deerhoof - Offend Maggie
Ehnahre - The Man Closing Up
Eiko Ishibashi - Drifting Devil
Kayo Dot - Blue Lambency Downward
Krallice - S/T
Lars Horntveth - Kaleidoscopic
Mar de Grises - Draining the Waterheart
The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath

Melt-Banana - Bambi's Dilemma
Meshuggah - ObZen
Mutyumu - il y a
Silver Mount Zion - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons
Virus - The Black Flux
Wormsblood - In the Stars

I think it was a great year, like every other, but then again idgaf about important albums everyone's supposed to care about.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 4 September 2017 13:25 (eight years ago)

I like 2008. The late 00'ies was a weird time, Brooklyn indie taking over, hiphop being in kind of a slump, dubstep having it's moment before it went wobbly. The biggest albums from that time probably came out in 2007 or 09, but 08 was the year of:

Vampire Weekend
Azeda Booth - In Flesh Tones
El Guincho
High Places
The Mae Shi - Hlllyh
Tha Carter III
The Bug - London Zoo
Parts & Labor - Receiver

Etc.

It feels like a freer year than the ones surrounding it.

Frederik B, Monday, 4 September 2017 13:34 (eight years ago)

When P4k (I know, I know) did their giant reader-vote list 'best albums of the website's era' things in (what?) 2012 or so, it was v noticable that 2008 had fewer records represented.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 4 September 2017 13:39 (eight years ago)

Not a great year. Some things I like...

TV on the Radio - Dear Science
Enslaved - Vertebrae
Leviathan - Massive Conspiracy Against All Life
Enforcer - Into the Night
Gridlink - Amber Gray
The Sword - Gods of the Earth
Genghis Tron - Board Up the House
Mitochondrion - Archaeaeon
Nachtmystium - Assassins - Black Meddle Part I
Santogold - Santogold
Grails - Doomsdayer's Holiday
Firewater - The Golden Hour
Torche - Meanderthal
Fuck the Facts - Disgorge Mexico
Mouth of the Architect - Quietly
Toxic Holocaust - An Overdose of Death...
Agalloch - The White EP
Disfear - Live The Storm
Made Out Of Babies - The Ruiner
Graveyard - Graveyard

Synecdoche, New York came out in 2008. it was an amazing year. a real emotional rollercoaster

billstevejim, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 07:18 (eight years ago)

Most of the things people have listed as being counter arguments I've not heard of, and judging by that (and the names) I'm assuming they're metal. Which means if you don't like metal, it sucked.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 07:42 (eight years ago)

I forgot the last Portishead album came out that year, I think many of us could agree that's a good record?

And yeah one of the benefits of being into metal is that the sheer volume of the stuff that comes out means that there's at least a few gems every year, or maybe I just have low standards lol

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 10:21 (eight years ago)

None of what I listed is metal.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 10:39 (eight years ago)

For me there were lots of good records in 2008 but not many great ones, compared to '06 or '07.

Erykah Badu - New Amerkyah Part One
Torche - Meanderthal
Enslaved - Vertebrae
Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna
Vampire Weekend - s/t
Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree
J. Stalin - Gas Nation
Beach House - Devotion

On the other hand, my Spotify singles playlist for 2008 has roughly as many songs as the ones for the rest of the decade.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 11:17 (eight years ago)

flappy bird, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 17:51 (eight years ago)

I did a year-by-year 2000s retrospective a couple years ago and I remember 2008 was the toughest one. I would suspect most ILM posters could do enough research to make any year sound amazing but a good year for music would require less effort.

No Age "Nouns" is still probably my favorite album of the last 10 years and it's a 2008 record. I love "Third" and "808s and Heartbreak" and "The Carter 3." Of course there were great records that year, but a solid year for music needs more than just a few great records.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 18:34 (eight years ago)

ah fuck yes, Nouns! man they are fucking great, I loved their most recent record, & was worried they'd split- but they're playing here in a couple months, really stoked to see them.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 18:43 (eight years ago)

2008 was probably my favourite year of the decade.

Portishead - Third
Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
Solange - Sol-Angel
Lindstrom - Where I Go You Go Too
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah
Hercules & Love Affair - S/T
Sebastien Tellier - Sexuality
Jazmine Sullivan - Fearless
Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree
Wild Beasts - Limbo Panto
Robert Forster - The Evangelist
Santogold - S/T
Vampire Weekend - S/T
Danity Kane - Welcome To The Dollhouse
School Of Seven Bells - Alpinisms
Hot Chip - Made In The Dark
Air France - No Way Down
Ne-Yo - Year Of The Gentleman
Ladyhawke - S/T
M83 - Saturdays = Youth
Grace Jones - Hurricane
TV On The Radio - Dear Science
Alex Moulton - Exodus
Tiffany Evans - S/T
Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna
Morgan Geist - Double Night Time
Algebra - Purpose
Lykke Li - Youth Novels

2008 was a great year for rap wtf

of course at the time critics only cared about stupid shit, but this was arguably the best year of gucci's career, + incredible releases by Max B, Boosie, Jacka, Jeezy (arguably his best album), Z-Ro, etc etc etc

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 18:51 (eight years ago)

fuckin Tha Carter III was 2008! dunno why i always have such a hard time remembering stuff that came out this year.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 18:55 (eight years ago)

Third was (still is) great, and there were a few good (if unspectacular) records. I loathe Vampire Weekend with every fibre of my being.

All this thread is doing is essentially confirming to me that 2008 was the weakest year of that decade.

Every decade has one notable year which isn't as great as the others: in the '70s it was 1974. In the '80s it was 1988. In the '90s it was 1990. In the '10s so far it has been 2014. 2008 was probably worse than any of those, though.

Week of Wonders (Ross), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 18:59 (eight years ago)

2014 -

aphex twin syro
sharon van etten - are we there yet
azaelia banks - broke with expensive taste
fka twigs - LP1

angel olsen - burn your fire...

Week of Wonders (Ross), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 19:02 (eight years ago)

2014 also had RUINS by Grouper, POM POM by Ariel Pink, "Little Fang" by Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks...

flappy bird, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 19:05 (eight years ago)

2014 was the weakest year of the decade so far. 2013 of course being the strongest, with this year not too far behind.

good albums by Simon Bookish and Max Tundra, both of whom promptly disappeared

billstevejim, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 23:58 (eight years ago)

Let's see, just going through my iTunes, here's stuff from 2008 that I liked in alphabetic order. . .

Erykah Badu — New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)
Beach House — Devotion
Beck — Modern Guilt
Coldplay — Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends
Coldplay — Prospekt's March
Nicola Conte — Rituals
The Cure — 4:13 Dream
Death Cab for Cutie — Narrow Stairs
The Durutti Column — Sunlight to Blue. . .Blue to Blackness
Fleet Foxes — Fleet Foxes
Fleet Foxes — Sun Giant
For Against — Shade Side Sunny Side
Midsummer — Driftwood
The Occasional Keepers — True North
The Paper Hats (William Tyler) — Deseret Canyon
Portishead — Third
The Sea and Cake — Car Alarm
Sigur Rós — Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust
Stereolab — Chemical Chords
Trembling Blue Stars — Exploring the Shadows
Vampire Weekend — Vampire Weekend
Thom Yorke — The Eraser Remixes
The Zincs — Black Pompadour

Pretty decent year ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Wednesday, 6 September 2017 01:20 (eight years ago)

damn well that's fucking interesting, then again it's probably a case of point of entry - Alegranza! was the first thing I heard by him (iirc it's his debut), and I played it a lot in the two or so years leading up to his next record. It just didn't click.

Agree about 1990; definitely don't agree about 1988... Spirit of Eden, Nation of Millions, Daydream Nation, Surfer Rosa, Isn't Anything, Sixty-Nine, Long Live the Kane, Blue Bell Knoll, Bug, Strictly Business, Nothing's Shocking, Green, South of Heaven, Critical Beatdown, Follow the Leader... I'd go for '83 or maaaybe '89 if I had to pick a dud year from the '80s.
