The 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees were announced on January 14th. The five artists who will be inducted in the "Performer" category are:
Metallica Jeff Beck Run-DMC Little Anthony and the Imperials Bobby Womack
Wanda Jackson is being inducted in the "Early Influence" category, even though she was nominated as a performer.
Inducted into the "Sideman" category this year:
Spooner Oldham Bill Black D.J. Fontana
Artists who didn't make the cut this year were War, The Stooges and Chic. The Stooges have now been denied induction by the Voting Committee seven times and Chic has lost five times. This was War's first nomination. Future Rock Hall correctly predicted four out of the five inductees in the "Performer" category.

The Hall should be burned down.

That stinks.

Why does Jann hate Jim so much?

Spooner Oldham Is Dan Penn already in?
"Why does Jann hate Jim so much?"
Not Jann's fault, probably. He keeps putting the Stooges on the ballot. But the idiot voters keep voting to elect Little Fucking Anthony.

Much as Metallica and Run-DMC deserve to be in there (and they do), there is no way on god's green earth they deserve to get there before The Stooges, Chic or even War. And Jeff Beck, Little Anthony, Bobby freaking Womack? Jesus Christ.

do people really actually pay attention to or care about this?
― tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 21:02 (seventeen years ago)
I enjoyed watching the Stooges play and then seeing Jim politely thanking Madonna on youtube but other than that I don't really care.
― ilx chilton (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 21:03 (seventeen years ago)
No one cares, other than the people immediately involved, and they may not even care that much. But it's still galling. For those who enjoy being galled I mean.

I enjoy the Rock Hall of Fame because they always put together very well-done tributes to their inductees.
I'll be really impressed with whatever they pull off with their tributes to Little Anthony and Who the Fuck is Bobby Womack.

I like Bobby Womack--teenage gospel singer, guitarist with Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett and Sly Stone, pal of the Rolling Stones, and semi-successful solo artist on and off from the ‘60s through the ‘80s. He did “Across 110th Street,” and “Harry Hippie”
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 15 January 2009 05:49 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, who the fuck is Little Anthony, morelike!
― Lightbulb Classic (sic), Thursday, 15 January 2009 06:26 (seventeen years ago)
little anthony was like the johnny thunders of doo wop. sorta.
― m coleman, Thursday, 15 January 2009 10:40 (seventeen years ago)
Please don't. It's up the street from my office, and the logistical fuck-uppery would really put a damper on my day.

Chic one can understand from strict "rock'n'roll" criteria (although it would have been better to rechristen the HOF to the "Pop, Rock & R&B Hall Of Fame" to avoid such genre based nitpicking). The Stooges still seems strange, except I guess it's about time to concentrate on inducting more recent acts instead.
― Geir Hongro, Thursday, 15 January 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)
And, I guess Run DMC count as "rock'n'roll" for no other reason than they sampled heavy guitar riffs.
― Geir Hongro, Thursday, 15 January 2009 15:03 (seventeen years ago)
Didn't just sample; "Rock Box" was original stuff.
I like all these, but isn't Beck already in with the Yardbirds? I can see Womack and Little Anthony way before I can see his handful of OK-not-great solo albums.

Really, not knowing/liking Bobby Womack and Little Anthony? Are you guys all secretly Alex in NYC?

Know and like just fine. Nothing against either LA or BW. Just think there's a case to be made for basically everybody who ever had a hit single, or laid groundwork, or fought it out in the trenches, and I'm not concerned with that. Stoogis is on Elvis/Chuck Berry/Stones/P-Funk level in terms of serious long-term influence and "importance". Clash is in, Ramones is in, VU is in. Time is way long past to rectify.
― Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Thursday, 15 January 2009 17:10 (seventeen years ago)
Sure, just 'cause I'm a fan of Little Anthony doesn't mean I don't dig Iggy, too.

Yes, Madonna cares.
― Pillboxxx/The Lol Belol (Pillbox), Thursday, 15 January 2009 17:35 (seventeen years ago)
Honestly, I do know who Bobby Womack and Little Anthony are. I just know The Stooges a whole lot better, and it's annoying to see this ridiculous group of geezers deem The Stooges less important than the group who sang "Shimmy Shimmy Koko Bop."
Frankly, though, the Rock Hall has this awesome way of making even their most minor inductees into godlike immortals at the ceremony though. I didn't buy the induction of the Ventures until I saw their induction video.
