A thread for unashamed and unironic love for Fall Out Boy (NO HATERS!!!).

Largely inspired by the surprising amount of bile in the comments section for AV Club's (admittedly mostly positive) review of Folie À Deux:

http://www.avclub.com/articles/fall-out-boy,17105/

I've only recently picked up the record and I think it's easily as enjoyable as Infinity On High, but I'm amazed that the hate for this band basically boils down to "I think Pete Wentz is a douche". I'm not a 15-year-old Myspacer, so I couldn't give a flying one about FOB's image or Wentz's celebrity hi-jinx, so that leaves their music, which I actually really love - I don't remember the last time I got this excited about a pure top 40 band, which means I'm either aging at an exponential rate, or there really is something of merit that I've not been able to put my finger on just yet.

Anyway, I know there's more than a handful of ILMers who enjoy this band. Share your thoughts here.

Devo:Devo 2.0 :: The Fall:Fall Out Boy ?

Bored of Canada (S-), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

As I've said elsewhere, Stump is killer awesome, but Wentz's lyrics are just awful. If somehow someone else can take over their writing, I think Fall Out Boy would be unmitigated classic. But with Wentz currently penning, they are just potential - not actual - super amazing.

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

I've never understood the level of hate for FOB. I don't love them, but they certainly know their way around a tune.

wow corny indie fucks who read a site called "a.v. club" in hating a mtv/teen rock band shocker - soo amazing

jordy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

Also, Infinity on High is a better record than Folie a Deux. But both are FAR better than Cork Tree.

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

anyway this album is awesome. we talked about it in the IOH thread a bit. i think it's better than that one overall though it doesn't have the higher peaks. it also doesnt have the lower lows. "the (shipped) gold standard" is my fav. also stump is a genius

jordy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

i like how the fat guy always wears a hat

ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

FWIW, I reviewed this for the Voice - so all my opinions here would just be retreads of there. I can say tho that my review then speaks for how I feel now. The album hasn't grown on me at all.

Way to strawman there, sir. Indie accounts for about 2% of my general taste in music (I've always been more of a corny house/techno fuck), and AV Club is the non-parodic offspring of The Onion, which you may have figured out if you'd bothered to click on the link.

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

lol. I think J0rdan knows what the AV Club is.

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm gonna go wash the egg off my face. Carry on.

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, jordy, I didn't realize what you were going for there.

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

it's ok tantrum - we are FOB fans in arms

jordy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

Amen! A lot of corny indie fuxxx do read that site, to be fair. Every time they review a mainstream artist there's at least one regular
who says "You're reviewing ___________ postively??? That's it, I'm outta here". Guess I shouldn't be that surprised at the reaction to the review, but I know a lot of people who like "credible" music that also dig FOB, which is the source of my befuddlement.

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

that's why pitchfork (smartly) doesnt have comments

jordy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

I feel cynical about any review website that primarily addresses aesthetics/social context, and not politics/economics. I'm not sure why I'm bringing that up here, but I find AV Club + PFM tend to fail to discuss albums/music. So it's no surprise that the comments are inane.

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

I'm starting to think I'm a masochist - I read those AV Club comments without fail, and they always exasperate and annoy.

Tantrum The Cat, Thursday, 15 January 2009 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, back to the album - I've always gotten the impression that Stump actually puts more work into the lyrics than Wentz, meaning:
Wentz scribbles random ideas in a notebook, Stump does the red-pen slash-and-burn, and hey presto, a song.

one month passes...

I really love 'What A Catch, Donnie'. Love Patrick's vocals on that, that swelling chorus is so cool. I just love how big his voice is getting with every album. I'm having fun being a real fangirl over this band...especially since I hadn't paid any attention to them til about 6 months ago (ok so it was Rockband, and singing Dead on Arrival that did it). Maybe I'm having a mid-30's crisis...maybe not. It's fun either way.

Meaning, I'm 34 and haven't been THIS excited about a band since I was in junior high and discovered Depeche Mode.

this comment doesn't make any sense to me--the more recent bombastic stuff kinda gets the gasface from me, but the early stuff actually has me picking up my guitar and playing along and shit. it sounds worth getting excited about.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 10 July 2009 21:36 (sixteen years ago)

I really disliked their early stuff, but love everything since Infinity on High.

Not surprised, they'd been hinting at it for a while and the commercial failure of Folie a Deux really took the wind out of their sails. Love that album, though, put it at #1 on my ballot for the ILX albums poll (I consider it an '08 album, but someone nominated it and I like it better than any album released in 2009).

some dude, Thursday, 4 February 2010 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

Stump solo album could be amazing or bland as hell, really no idea which way it'll go

single from Wentz's new band is pretty awful and features the "chiddy bang" guy:
