margin of quality between these tracks is very slight, imo... and the whole thing is so impeccably sequenced, which makes it even harder to tell.. i'm leaning towards "life's a beach" lately but i think i'll wait a couple days at least to make a final call on this one..

big summer album, of course, but it snugs in so nicely with piano magic, durutti collumn, etc

winston, Thursday, 15 January 2009 05:50 (seventeen years ago)

Out There vs Life's A Beach for me - the latter was the highlight of my favourite ever listening-to-Studio experience (on a boat, feet dangling over the edge, sunshine streaming down, all of that shit) so i'll prob go with that.

"out there", though i do love the guitar solos in "self service" and those weird sickly vocals at the end of "origin"

jordy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 15 January 2009 07:36 (seventeen years ago)

Can't wait for the inevitable confusion over which versions of which tracks we are talking about.

Irrelevant for me as I'm voting for Out There - the slow build from the soft Ibiza chillout pads midway through to the rolling Moroder synth near the end is just one of the greatest things ever.

OUT THERE

lex pretend, Thursday, 15 January 2009 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

'life's a beach' is great too but i prefer the todd terje rmx

lex pretend, Thursday, 15 January 2009 10:13 (seventeen years ago)

no one should be voting for any of the the songs with dude's voice on them

lex pretend, Thursday, 15 January 2009 10:13 (seventeen years ago)

I bought West Coast then went to the pub, came home drunk and put Out There on at 33, not realising that the whole record is at 45, then listened half-asleep to the 25 minutes of psychedelic skank that ensued. Sounded amazing, but it's never really matched that, either at the right speed or slowed down.

Anyway, I vote Self Service - prefer the 8:14 version, though.

Jamie T Smith, Thursday, 15 January 2009 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

I like the ones with singing!

Jamie T Smith, Thursday, 15 January 2009 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

damn right. Out There is moarawesome but voting Self Service anyway.

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

shame it's not Yearbook One so I can vote for No Comply

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

whats wrong with the singing? my fave bit on the album is probably the bit where he goes 'solid gooootiiiiiimes' and then the guitars crash in

Michael B, Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:07 (seventeen years ago)

Remember who you are talking to. That specific bit is amazing though, especially the drawl in the vocals - it's the sound of being really fucked off your face and horizontal in the sunshine.

Matt DC, Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:14 (seventeen years ago)

x-post yeah the singing on this is great

that being said 'west side' all the way, then life's a beach, then west side, who the fuck is into origin except for my bloody valentine fans which i am one, and which i'm into it no correlation.

matt p (Matt P), Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:16 (seventeen years ago)

it's the sound of being really fucked off your face and horizontal in the sunshine.

this is fucking perfect and indicative of everything here imo

matt p (Matt P), Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

i went with 'west side', 'self service' would be the runner up. it might be the radio edit im getting mixed up with but with the first 5 seconds of 'self service', i always think its going to break into 'africa' by toto

Michael B, Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

yah 'self service' coming up right now and it's gorgeous.

i finally got into this a week ago driving to chichen itza in mexico..

matt p (Matt P), Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

not a thing really but it was for me then, trees, green

matt p (Matt P), Thursday, 15 January 2009 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

i did out there but given how righteous the sequencing is and the fact that half the songs sound like they're two different songs anyway it seems weird to choose

8====D ------ ㋡ (max), Thursday, 15 January 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

but out there is just a fuckin m-o-n-s-t-e-r

8====D ------ ㋡ (max), Thursday, 15 January 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

yeah

matt p (Matt P), Thursday, 15 January 2009 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

so-er against you... Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo

I don't even know if that's the lyric but that's what it sounds like to me and it's my fave bit on the album except maybe for the bit in "Out There" where the lachrymose synth chords come in.

Tim F, Thursday, 15 January 2009 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

the first big guitar riff is my favourite bit of Out There. i can play it on my MicroKorg (surprisingly similar sounding too).

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2009 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Whether or not the "Self Service" poll option is the long or short version is very key! The long version would be my favourite thing here and the short version would be my least favourite. (The short version seems to be trying to turn it into a "song" when it really doesn't work as one and there's just not enough breathing room for it to retain the bliss-out appeal of the original.) Disregarding the long "Self Service", my favourite is "Life's A Beach" because when i listen to it i feel that its title is otm

aaron d.g., Tuesday, 20 January 2009 00:51 (seventeen years ago)

I assume the short version, as I have yet to track down the mythical longer one.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

indo deserves some love but won't get any. such a perfect closer. it's like the album – the coast – slowly drifting away from you, the residue of a dream, the sound of a transient paradise barely heard across a growing distance of water, the gentle guiding of the listener back to reality. gah i love this album. i voted self service.

negotiable, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i'd feel really bad for Indo if it got no votes, it is so wonderful. change my vote to Indo thx.
