They did a great remix of Tony Allen's Sankofa last year and were the highlight of Damon Albarn's Honest Jon's Show in London around the same time.

Think I saw these guys busking on Regent Street once. They were excellent.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a 9-piece, Chicago-based jazz group featuring 8 sons of Phil Cohran on horns.

i know, every time i hear something about these guys it's another stupendous part of their resume. i saw them at union sq as above, but i think they do it reasonably often? i read an interview where they talked about the contrast between touring the world and then playing for dollar bills. they were awesome. i heard some of the records and wasn't feeling it as much - has anyone got one?

i wouldn't call them a jazz group, they don't really improvise at all.

three years pass...

New one w/ Dad on board is really good. Nice stately Cuba-by-way-of-Ethiopia feel to the opening track:

The dad plays a regular Friday night gig at an Ethiopian restaurant down the street from me. Always awesome. I used to see them outside of Marshall Fields on State St. They threw down. So, so great.

Hadn't really known what to expect when I saw them, for some reason had been expecting a New Orleans 2nd line group. They seem closer to hip hop or gogo or something.
They played for free at the Volvo Ocean Race and were pretty great.
Was thinking I might pick up a cd but then thought they might not work outside of the live experience. Does sound from listening to them online as if it does though.
