This chart is pretty much a perfect snapshot of the era immediately post-Britpop. Needs a fifth-rate Hurricane #1 type indie hanger on band but otherwise everything else is in place.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 January 2009 10:15 (seventeen years ago)

For those who have somehow forgotten, The Wonders were actually Fountains of Wayne performing as the band from Tom Hanks movie That Thing You Do.

The boy with the Arab money (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:22 (seventeen years ago)

I realised it was from that Tom Hanks movie. Didn't know about them being Fountains of Wayne. To the best of my knowledge I've never heard Fountains of Wayne.

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:22 (seventeen years ago)

don't let go (love) vs can't knock the hustle

lex pretend, Friday, 16 January 2009 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

i like 'your woman' fine but when you see it in context it's baffling that so many people hold it up as, like, an all-time pop classic thing. it pales beside half this chart.

lex pretend, Friday, 16 January 2009 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

1. White Town
2. Daft Punk
3. Maxwell
4. Eels.

9. Texas
10. Sash!

Can't remember enough about DJ Kool and Jay-Z/Mary J Blige to make a judgement.

Cathy Dennis did Waterloo Sunset? Sheesh.

27. Maxwell - Sumthin' Sumthin' The Mantra

^^^ is this like the bit in Daria where Trent calls his new band "Something Something Explosion"

The boy with the Arab money (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

I actually remember her doing it but I can't remember what it sounds like. I'm guessing it sounds like "Waterloo Sunset".

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

Hopefully with a Suggs guest rap in the middle.

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:29 (seventeen years ago)

The song was also covered by Cathy Dennis as a CD single and on the album 'Am I The Kinda Girl' (1996). It was released as a single and reached number 11 in the UK charts. The video featured Cathy in a black taxi cab driving through North London showing from time to time the back of the cab driver's head. At the end of the song, the driver turns round and turns out to be Ray Davies.

mike t-diva, Friday, 16 January 2009 10:32 (seventeen years ago)

Did all these tracks really come out in early 97? I have them all over the shop time-wise in my mind.

texas really were such fucking chancers

lex pretend, Friday, 16 January 2009 10:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yes obviously but chancers who wrote some really nice swoon/Mondeo soft MOR ballads.

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously will rep for either version of "Say What You Want" or "Halo" from that year.

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

'say what you want' is one of the most blatant examples of melodic plagiarism i've ever heard. sharleen spiteri = the duffy of her day, her voice was totally void of personality.

lex pretend, Friday, 16 January 2009 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

i remember their other two hits this year blatantly nicked other songs' tunes too but can't remember what...one of them was a new order lift, i think?

lex pretend, Friday, 16 January 2009 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

xpost: Was the 1997 version of "You Got The Love" the Now Voyager mix? 'Cos that's totally different from the "Your Love" mash-up that charted in 1991. (And the original 1986 gospel version that came out on Streetwave, which was always my favourite.)

"Say What You Want" was a good record!

mike t-diva, Friday, 16 January 2009 10:47 (seventeen years ago)

"Halo" definitely stole the chorus from something. Can't remember now.

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:47 (seventeen years ago)

Halo was basically a Pretenders rip-off I think.

Yehudi Menudo (NickB), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:50 (seventeen years ago)

The Eels might actually be the worst band of the late 90s and that's up against some serious fucking competition.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 January 2009 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

Come the fuck on Space are on this list.

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

TS annoying cartoon chirpy vs annoying cartoon mopey. Yeah it's a tough one, but at least Space could be relied upon to be unintentionally amusing.

Pescetarian Reich (DJ Mencap), Friday, 16 January 2009 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

Voted DJ Kool anyway, I recall that as being a unrulier-than-your-average TOTP performance... maybe just cos it's, well, quite a shouty song

Pescetarian Reich (DJ Mencap), Friday, 16 January 2009 12:22 (seventeen years ago)

I'll defend "Swallowed", probably the only good non-POTUSA post-grunge track. And yeah, I voted for DJ Kool in the end as well.

The boy with the Arab money (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 16 January 2009 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

I voted No Doubt. I loved that record at the time and it still sounds good.

I have always had a very, very deep hatred for Texas. Probably one of my most hated bands ever, in fact. Horrible, nothingy, 'catchy' songs that are just perfect for Heart FM's programmers to blast out six times a day until the end of time. Also, a very annoying, syrupy 'Scottish soul' style of vocal delivery.

dubmill, Friday, 16 January 2009 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

Voted Ben Folds Five. "Da Funk" is also great, but not as great as "Around The World".

Daft Punk but honorary mentions to Lithium/Madan and the AVH mix of Apollo 440

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Friday, 16 January 2009 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

quite a few 'their worst single' entries here:

En Vogue
Bush (probably)
Warren G
Cathy Dennis
LL Cool J
Space
Michelle Gayle

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Friday, 16 January 2009 13:44 (seventeen years ago)

Warren G ft Peter Andre joint has to push that close though.

The boy with the Arab money (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 16 January 2009 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

I love that En Vogue song, not their worst single at all!

chap, Friday, 16 January 2009 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

Bush (probably)

Yes. "Swallow" was horrible. "Glycerine" was almost kind of nice, but when "Swallowed" was released, I surely realized that the Bush haters were right.

(And they still are, although now we're speaking of an entirely different Bush ;) )

Geir Hongro, Friday, 16 January 2009 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

which is your favourite bush, geir?

Matt DC, Friday, 16 January 2009 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

Vannevar Bush, conceiver of the Internet

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

Surely "Swallowed" was the first single Bush released that anybody took note of?

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

THIS SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC I MEAN SORRY

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

Percy Frank Bush (born 23 June 1879, Cardiff, Wales and died 19 May 1955, Cardiff) was a Welsh rugby union player who represented Wales. Playing at fly-half, Bush is regarded as one of the most talented Welsh players before the first World War.[1] Bush played most of his career for Cardiff RFC making 171 appearances and scoring 66 tries between 1899 and 1913. He captained the club for three seasons. He won eight caps[2] for Wales (1905 - 1910), including for the famous 1905 victory over New Zealand. He also played in four tests for the 1904 British Isles on their tour to Australia and New Zealand. This was before he had been capped by Wales. He was the undoubted star of the tour, being dubbed 'Will o' the Wisp' by the Australian press for his devastating play[3]. Bush also played county cricket for Glamorgan.

The boy with the Arab money (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

"Swallowed" is basically everything you want from a grunge song:

* Scratchy not-much-tune quiet verse to have a rest during
* Humungous minor key waves of crashing guitar chords chorus
* Chug
* Abstract yet "fuck me my life sucks" lyric
* Doesn't hang around
* Endless Da Capo

"Two Ears" Laybelle (Noodle Vague), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

*Goldie & Rob Playford Remix (this was their worst too tho)

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

everything i want from a grunge song = for it not to exist. bush fail.

stevem is insane re: en vogue

lex pretend, Friday, 16 January 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

always found it a real drag and the guitars on it are horrible - and it hung around on the charts for too long. i thought it was older than this tho.

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, "Don't Let Go" was En Vogue's only dud single IMHO. Don't like the guitars, either.

mike t-diva, Friday, 16 January 2009 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

I kinda thought anything after the New Jill Swing era from En Vogue was some bullshit, tbh.

The boy with the Arab money (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 16 January 2009 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah Swallowed is really dull, no momentum at all, and the by then completely played-out quiet/loud thing in lieu of actual dynamics.

chap, Friday, 16 January 2009 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, not heard the term 'New Jill Swing' before, I like it.

slim pickings here for actual stand-outs. voted DJ Kool although Da Funk is actually better, because one-hot wonders need love too.

the RZA/Meth version of Say What You Want is great, Spiteri should have spent two years rap hookgirl-for-hire after this.

Lightbulb Classic (sic), Sunday, 18 January 2009 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for White Town. Have love for Daft Punk and DJ Kool. Soft spot for Blueboy.

I can't believe so many people are expressing a liking for No Doubt - an execrable fucking song with no redeeming features. I find Eels almost as bad, to be honest, but have kind of resigned myself to otherwise rational people liking this shit.
