My instinct says Georgia, but I want to do some checking out first.

The Reverend, Saturday, 17 January 2009 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

"georgia" is one of my favorite songs ever or else i'd vote for chubby

jordy (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 17 January 2009 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

Better list than I was expecting. Ray.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 17 January 2009 11:01 (seventeen years ago)

This is part 13, actually.

The Reverend, Saturday, 17 January 2009 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

"Save The Last Dance For Me".

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 17 January 2009 12:22 (seventeen years ago)

"Alley Oop." Caveman songs (see also: "Troglodyte," "Neanderthal Man") rule.

xhuxk, Saturday, 17 January 2009 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

Ray Charles, "Georgia On My Mind", for sentimental reasons. Then "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Cathy's Clown", and "El Paso". I don't know "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" but as a logician I appreciate the multiple quantifiers in the title.

Euler, Saturday, 17 January 2009 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

I went "Stay" and actively dislike more than half the list.

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 17 January 2009 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

"Georgia On My Mind" and "Cathy's Clown" are also great.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 17 January 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

I voted Bikini, but Alley Oop is also a true great. Several tracks I need to listen on here.

Carne Meshuggah (libcrypt), Saturday, 17 January 2009 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

Ray Charles, I can't listen to the dude. He's just played out like Hendrix or something or maybe his tinkling was never designed for my ears.

Carne Meshuggah (libcrypt), Saturday, 17 January 2009 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, Running Bear is pretty good!

Carne Meshuggah (libcrypt), Saturday, 17 January 2009 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

really probably "save the last dance," but i voted "el paso" becz i love it.

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 17 January 2009 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

Wish I knew more of these songs though I probably know more than I think I do. I'll have to check some of these out.

ColinO, Saturday, 17 January 2009 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

Cathey's Clown
Cathey's Clown
Cathey's Clown
Cathey's Clown
Cathey's Clown
Cathey's Clown

(is that really how it's spelled?)

THE SUGGEST BANS! THEY DO NOTHING!! (PappaWheelie V), Saturday, 17 January 2009 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

Both of the Connie Francis songs are fantastic. One of the reasons I hate rock music (even though I love rock music) is that it sets up a hierarchy in which a singer like Connie Francis is irrelevant. And where I am now it's Saturday night in New York City & there's a thousand shitty indie rock bands I could go see if I wanted to, but nowhere can I go see a singer like Connie Francis.

Josefa, Sunday, 18 January 2009 07:13 (seventeen years ago)

Too bad Taylor Swift wasn't in town. (Not to say she sounds like Connie Francis, but she probably fills a similar cultural niche; Connie would have been 21 in 1960, a little older than Taylor now but still close. And though none come to mind right off the top of my head, I bet it wouldn't take that much time to find a recent pop-country singer who does sing something like Connie.)

Josefa, you should read Karen Schoemer's book Great Pretenders, which discusses a lot of things you touch upon and also has a chapter devoted to Connie Francis.

By the way, one of my oldest friends isn't in the music business any longer for various reasons that might be boiled down to "She got sick of it," but one of the people she never stopped listening to is Connie Francis. And not just a hits CD, either.

wow, this was much harder than i expected it to be; at least nine potential picks for me. still, gotta go with the Drifters here and now.

Ioannis, Sunday, 18 January 2009 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Cathy's Clown one of the few i know but it's good so that

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2009 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

Pretty strong list but I gotta go with "El Paso"
Only 3 songs that I didn't know by title.
That's compared to knowing 2 on the 06 poll

steampig67, Sunday, 18 January 2009 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for the tips, If Timi & Chuck. Don't know the Schoemer book but will order it right away.

I voted "My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own."

Josefa, Sunday, 18 January 2009 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

I feel that I should have chosen Running Bear since it is now my new favorite song.

Carne Meshuggah (libcrypt), Monday, 19 January 2009 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

Lib, I'm trying to isolate my guitar thing so I can play it and no one but goth rocker dudes will know

Went for the Everlys.

Mark G, Monday, 19 January 2009 08:04 (seventeen years ago)

I went with "Stay" because there is a crazy swagger in that vocal and instrumental track that elevates it higher than the others. That record moves like Dion, Toots, and Gary US Bonds, but really exists in a world of it's own.

james k polk, Monday, 19 January 2009 08:10 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a big sucker for "It's Now or Never."

Matos W.K., Monday, 19 January 2009 08:25 (seventeen years ago)

that sux that "His Latest Flame" only made it to #4...

hey man dont look at me i dont vote (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 19 January 2009 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

Save the Last Dance for Me, in part for the back story. Does everyone already know this? Doc Pomus had polio, got around on crutches or braces or a wheelchair, so his lyrics, inspired by watching his wife dance with other men, come from a not so carefree place.

dad a, Monday, 19 January 2009 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

It was a glorious moment last June in Brooklyn when during the free opera concert in Prospect Park opera stars Angela Gheorghiu & Roberto Alagna were singing "O Sole Mio" & then dropped the Italian to sing the rest of the song in the Elvis "It's Now or Never" lyrics.

Anyone who picks Georgia On My Mind is someone who would be impressed with Starbucks compilations.

Also can we hurry up and get to 1962 for Telstar?

Sad that Theme from a Summer Place didn't get one vote (it's probably in my top 5 of these choices), but the results are about right in every other way.
