Thoughts on Dexys Searching for the Young Soul Rebels (please reply to this one)

Went out and bought it today, finally, I've been wanting to see if this lives up to hype and I'm wondering what others opinions of it are.

On the one hand I've been disappointed by 'hype' LPs in the past (Loveless by My Bloody Valentine - urgh: what the FUCK is that racket???) and OK Computer by Radiohead spring to mind. On the other hand, some 'hype' albums have really lived up to the acclaim (including that rather quaint and timeless moment when I discovered my favourite band of all time by taking a chance on some CD called 'The Queen is Dead' almost half a decade ago...)

So... 'Searching for the Young Soul Rebels' - dungaree clad morons frotned by a closeted cross dresser and with some instrumental sections or sheer class? Opinions please.

The other thread has somehow entered me as wanting E mail replies... grrrr!

Regarding the alnum... its one of my faves ever, probably the best £1 I ever spent! I'll think of something more interesting to say when its less early in the morning...

I acquired this very recently too (second hand vinyl, cheap but quite badly scratched, sadly). I was blown away by the magnificence of the final track - much better than I remembered it being when it was a single.

despite EVERYTHING, the fashion mistakes, the grumpy lead singer, seeing aforesaid grumpy lead singer in a negligee having loo rolls thrown at him trying to sing "concrete and clay" while two women in bras chucked loo rolls back at the crowd at reading dexy's midnight runners DID NO WRONG! three superb and very different albums - the best to me is "don't stand me down" but "searching" nudges so close so often! passionate, raw and very very funny ("i've been searching for the young soul rebels/ but i can't find them/ where've you hidden them")

i don't think kevin was lip synching - it was him, a backing track and a sarong which his two backing - um - dancers (women in bras) whipped off to reveal the women's underwear and it all went downhill from there...

words cannot explain how excited i was at the prospect of seeing kevin live, and he was singing great but the music was just so PREPOSTEROUS! in the context of the festival as well. the missiles started fairly quickly and it was horrendously comic - his face was a mix of disgust and sadness and i desperately didn't want to laugh but it was all so bizarre. it got really grotesque when the security men started throwing stuff at him as well and the women in bras started throwing them back... he broke down in one song and just begged us to hear him out and then after the four songs was taken off in tears. i felt quite ashamed of myself for laughing at it all. it was just so - well - surreal... certainly the strangest thing i have ever witnessed musically in my life...

I don't suppose anyone's actually heard My Beauty? I listened to his cover of I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top off some NME CD recently, and I thought it was fantastic... is the rest of the album any good?

Think I'll buy some Dexy's tomorrow...

Well, I bought some Dexy's. Young Soul Rebels and Too-Rye-Ay to be precise. Halfway through Young Soul Rebels right now, it is sounding rather ace at present. I'll probably get sneered at for this, but Geno is fucking gorgeous. (must stop being such a sucker for brass sections...)

I got The Lexicon Of Love too, which I think I saw someone recommend on here - that's bloody good and all.

Strangely enough (or not), most second-hand record shops in London seem to have a healthy stock of promo copies of "My Beauty" (including the Springsteen cover which was withdrawn for legal reasons, and without which the whole narrative of the album doesn't make sense) at standard prices. If you come down and ask nicely they'll probably give you one for gratis.

I read somewhere or other that 'My Beauty' only sold about 500 copies, so there should certainly be a surplus somewhere or other... and it's a great and glorious folly...

Much harder to find - Kev's first solo alb, 'The Wanderer' (is it available on CD anywhere?) I remember not enjoying it that much at the time, but now I'd like to hear it again...
