I don't know why this wasn't the biggest news ever but Angela Morley (formerly Wally Stott) died on January 14th, 2009.

Angela did a million things, most notably she was musical director for The Goon Show, composed the music for Watership Down, helped John Williams out with the soundtrack to Star Wars. More pertinent to this board, she was responsible for all the best orchestral arrangements on Scott Walker's first four solo albums, (she did "It's Raining Today"), as well as Dusty Springfield ("The Look Of Love") and Shirley Bassey.

Blimey - I remember watching 30th Century Man with my mates and one of them saying they'd rather have heard more about her than the various talking heads eulogising Scott 4. Which is a fair point - I really didn't know what she'd done outside of those Scott albums.

fascinating life, also wrote the music for Hancocks Half Hour. Musical arrangements on the Goon Show were amazing, track down the episode 'The Sleeping Prince' for an example of fun musical weirdness.

Good grief, that resume! It's the Watership Down part that intrigues me the most.

Great obituary in the Grauniad. What an astonishing story hers/his was.

I think that's the last major living link with The Goon Show now severed... :-( *

*hang on, is Graham Stark still around?

Didn't know she had done so much work! Knew her only from the Scott Walker albums. Great piece in the Guardian, remarkable story.

fifteen years pass...

Happy 100th birthday Angela Morley. This is still one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded.
