C/D: Debbie Gibson

I wrote off Debbie Gibson back in the 80s, but I stumbled across her records on Allmusic, and saw that her debut album got an unexpectedly rave review ("it's some of the best teen pop you're likely to hear"). see here:

Also, I didn't know that she wrote all of her own music, and produced most of it too! I can't imagine any teen-pop star doing that these days.

"Only in My Dreams" is pretty tuff.

a keyboard player i used to jam with sometimes in college had a huge debbie gibson crush. he wrote a song for her to sing and managed to slip it to her road manager at a show. he never heard from her though. "out of the blue" is catchy:

debbie vs. tiffany was like the beatles vs. stones of late '80s mall pop.

Classic: 'Only In My Dreams' - always adored it. Don't know the rest though I do have that LP on vinyl.

I'd completely forgotten how much I adored "Only in My Dreams" when i was little. I was at the perfect age for the Debbie craziness and might have even owned her "Electric Youth" perfume. lol.

Female eighties fashion is so goddamn cute. My heart just melts when I see those hats and hear those synths...

Disposable-Filler to Worthy-Song ratio is about 8:1, but Only In My Dreams is classic. What a chorus.

btw "Out of the Blue" is kinda slow: she sounds awestruck on the verses, then she explodes on the chorus. I've cover this song as a midtempo punk jam.

She seems to have aged into a stable, solid performer. Good on her.

he went into the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest female artist to write, perform, and produce a Number One hit, with her 1988 ballad “Foolish Beat.”

Who is the youngest male artist to write, perform, and produce a Number One hit?

looks like whoever it is, he came after her:

With the coronation, Gibson became the youngest artist to write, produce and perform a Hot 100 No. 1; she remains the youngest female artist to do so.

I only just recently discovered this late-period (by which I mean '93) single, pretty dece updating of her sound to suit the times:

Shawn Mendes popped to mind, but his only #1 was that song with Camila Cabello, so maybe not
