Andrew WK: C/D?

How can anyone argue with the sentiment "We Want Fun (And We Want to Get Wasted)"? The man is Gary Glitter v. 2.0 (without the pedophilia!)

Shaky Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud dud.

He is what is wrong with the world.

His 'music' is a fucking pile of tripe, no matter what rehashed sentiment he bolsters.

Andrew, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything old is new again -- even threads! So retro, Mo. ;-) (The archives are your friend...)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dude the song "i get wet" rocks hard, with the harmonized "i really don't care"s

brains, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna see the man and his Obituary backing band live this coming Tuesday in Seattle. I love the album, but will the show party hard or hardly par? I'll let y'all know.

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd rather hear Andrew WK when I listen to the radio than Linkin Park or something. He's hardly "everything that's wrong with the world". The production on I get wet is certainly miles away from that of most commercial rock these days. Anyone who rags on him too much is simply being reactionary.

Clay, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Reactionary?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

His schtick is nowhere near funny enough to make listening to his music a less than painful experience. And likewise his music is just too fucking atrocious for me to get any sort of laughs out of it. 3 words: fucking awful mess

justin, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the archives are your friends - Ned Raggett, June 06, 2002

Ron, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hahahahaha "all wk haterz are hype reactionaries" - i tried that one on a white stripes thread (didn't work) ;-)

Ron, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll admit, I am a reactionary. I'm reacting to the fact that Andrew WK produces some of the least enjoyable music I've ever heard.

Andrew, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Though Andrew's music leaves me cold, you can't fault his ability to wring the "fratboy" niche dry.

Take the cash and run, yo.

Nichole Graham, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

domino, since you are such an andrew wk fan why don't you cop some of his moves when you're on stage? i'm certain that i'm not the only one who would love to see you smash a brick into your own face.

jarv, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like him!

Sean, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would rather eat the contents of an ashtray then listen to even a second of andrew wk (song or speaking). his very existance is offensive. and he probably is a pedophile too. every single one of his songs sounds like kim mitchel's "i am a wild party" done by a crappy metal band. listening to him will turn you stupid(er).

dyson, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

listening to him will turn you stupid
Which is reason enough to listen. Musical alcohol! I got tired of him pretty quickly, but it was fun while it lasted. And after several weeks away, "I Get Wet" still sounds pretty great.

Miranda, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"He's probably a pedophile" = funniest arguing tactic EVER.

Dan Perry, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but Dan it's okay, he has sex with LOTS of people

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Have I mentioned lately that I love these forums? Because I do.

Dan Perry, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I decided not to go. It dawned on me how impossible it would be for the man to do the live thing, and have it come close to the record. I might regret this decision later...

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit shit. Fuck it. I'm gonna go. Insert Butthole Surfers Sweatloaf quote here.

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bwa ha ha ha haaaaaaa! how was the show???

dyson, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw the show here in SF and it was pretty amazing/really fun - I should make that F-U-N for emphasis. The sound of the record was remarkably well-duplicated (there was a DAT/click-track in there somewhere, cuz no one was playing those synth parts on-stage) but the best part about it was just the overwhelming energetic positivity of the whole thing. These guys are grinning ear to ear, doing ridiculous David Lee Roth-style acrobatics, pounding guitar lines, leading sing-alongs - I tell ya, as far as live shows go it bore a startling resemblance to a Van Halen show circa 1982. The crowd was very diverse (lots of girls, indie kids, metal heads, punks, a few gay couples, even some little kids) and really into it - it was what a rock and roll party show should be.

And Andrew WK totally did this Jerry Lee Lewis piano-playing bit in the middle of a new song - it was rather odd to see him turn away from his fist-pumping cheerleading and lay into these fucking super- speed piano riffs. great great GREAT!

Shaky Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

was his nose bleeding at any point?

dyson, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no - but he did get wet.

Shaky Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shaky that sounds awesome. I wish I was there!

He's Sparks with fewer chords and bigger sweaty heterosexual balls. What's not to love?

iang, Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

i listened to the wolf with my roommate yesterday and i realized exactly what it is that makes that one so inferior to i get wet, which is clearly one of my top 10 albums of all time.

awk's voice is so enervated and propped up (background vox, more production), he sounds sort of fatigued, where on IGW, he sounded like he was actually going to kill you. maybe its just a production change, in which case he should change back. maybe he wrecked his voice touring nonstop between the records. in either case, i hope he gets everything back where it belongs on the power never stops forming. or else does something different but awesome. whatever.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 17 February 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

i have never heard "the wolf" but reading that i'm not sure i ever have to.

ive been listening to the Close Calls/Mother of Mankind set again. still feel the Roxy vibe only to be more precise it is a Bryan Ferry goofy crooner vibe ("Can You Dance With Me?" like some weird metal version of "Do The Strand").

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 21:26 (seven years ago)

some of those tracks feel like 70's Sparks to me, particularly "I Want Your Face" and "This is My World"

feel like you could combine the best stuff from those two discs to make an incredible hour-long album that would be (imo) one of the greatest albums of the decade

frogbs, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 21:46 (seven years ago)

Apparently I haven't yet mentioned on this thread that I'm in this video - in the cd library at the very beginning and then jumping up and down on the couch holding a paper mache parrot. This was quite the day.

lol so good. it sounds like they were playing the moaning vocals in the room while they did the interview.

imo the most creepy stuff he did was in the "Who Knows?" video. it's mostly a tour video but it has a lot of in between segments including short wordless performance art stuff like him really slowly creeping around a doorway and stuff. i think at the end of the video there is a part where someone just follows him walking down the street in the dark while weird ambient stuff is going on in the soundtrack. really spooky shit! when you realize it's just one guy in a room acting like a weird snake or something it makes it even more special. heh i love it.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 24 February 2018 20:45 (seven years ago)

Wow, that was great. genuinely unnerving in spots but all the concert footage is great. I forgot how fuckin' gnarly his original band looked. Whoever here said this was kind of like a springboard to Close Calls With Brick Walls was pretty OTM. I still think that's one of the most fascinating albums I own, especially from a bait-and-switch/pulling the rug out perspective. I'm always floored by the first song, not just because of how bare and desperate it is, but also because it's the first time you really get to hear him sing without all the processing and extreme multitracking. Even the bonus live tracks on IGW/The Wolf all have several lead vocal lines, they almost sound like 2+ performances overlaid on top of each other. But on Close Calls its like his personality splits in two - I don't think there were ever really two Andrew WKs but the whole story of AWK being this manufactured and heavily coached 'character' that went sour and wound up leaving him on his own does make sense in this context. The fact that the record took an additional four years to come out in America does point to some real drama going on behind the scenes. I really have no idea what this new album will bring, but I do have pretty high hopes for it right now - I relistened to IGW/The Wolf/Close Calls this weekend and they've all held up remarkably well.

Cheap Trick - "Hello There"

this song makes me think of Andrew W.K. a lot! its that caveman robot motorik party pop stylee!

it really makes me think of Close Calls-era tracks like "Can You Dance With Me" ("Would you like to do a numb-ah with meeee? Would you like taaa? Would you like taaa? Would you like to do a numb-ah with meeee?")

replace the word "rock" with "party" and this could be a AWK song.

If he singing about a Crowleyan fertility goddess now, that does suggest he was probably not going all Christian with the last album.

to party with our demons (Sund4r), Wednesday, 17 February 2021 15:15 (four years ago)

it never occurred to me that there were any Christian themes on the last album but he sure as hell sounds like a Midwestern preacher on the spoken word tracks

frogbs, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 15:20 (four years ago)

There were lyrical references to God, Christ, and the Cross!

to party with our demons (Sund4r), Wednesday, 17 February 2021 15:21 (four years ago)

I thought that song was great. I'll bet Andrew WK is a big BÖC fan.

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 15:43 (four years ago)

yeah maybe I should clarify, I know there were religious references on it but I never thought it was him going Christian, rather him grabbling with faith & existence & consciousness like he always does

I mean you can't come up with less Christian lyrics than this

I realized long ago
That all of life is one last waltz
I'd had enough of feeling low
I realized everything I knew was false

So I killed the place inside
That told me feeling good was a crime
So glad that place has finally died
Now here's to feeling good all of the time

frogbs, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 15:48 (four years ago)

Yeah, and he if anything seems to be identifying with the Devil in "Devil's on Your Side". It's an interesting question what his spiritual pov actually is. He makes sure that there's a disclaimer that he doesn't endorse evil at the start of this video. (Also, what is his struggle with psychological dissociation about? I didn't know about that.)

to party with our demons (Sund4r), Wednesday, 17 February 2021 15:57 (four years ago)

I thought that was actually a clever reference to the "Thriller" video..."Due to my strong personal convictions, I wish to stress that this record in no way endorses a belief in the occult"

I like all 4 singles, kinda wish the rest of the album was as diverse/powerful. in particular the last 3 tracks (on the LP, not the bonuses) are kind of a slog, but I've been digging them a bit more on further listens

frogbs, Thursday, 21 October 2021 20:46 (three years ago)
