"Dallience" - The Wedding Present
That Streets song about the girl ("All I could see was her elegance...")
"Foolin'" - Def Leppard
"Life's a Bitch" - Nas ("Life's a bitch and then you die/ that's why we get high/ 'cause you never know when you gonna go" - shit man, that line is so simple but so fucking dark)

There is this thread: Music to slit your wrists to.
My two candidates are still Holocaust by Big Star and Katy Song by the Red House Painters. And Nick Drake's Know.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and try this for some feelgood lyrical action:

Laying on the bathroom floor
Kitty licks my cheek once more
And I could try
But waking up is harder
when you wanna die

Walter`s on the telephone
Tell him I`m not at home
`Cause I think I am going
To a place where I`m always high

My name`s Elizabeth
My life is shit and piss

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

most depressing song in a major key --> "Please Release Me". If you heard the Ray Price version and you didn't know English you'd think he was singing about ice cream and horse racing or something but it's "Please release me, let me go / I don't love you anymore / To live together is a sin / Release me, and let me love again // I have found a new love, dear / And I always want her near / Her lips are warm while yours are cold / Release me, darling let me go" SHUDDER

Tracer Hand, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember reading that Billie Holiday's version of "Gloomy Monday" (I think that's the name) drove people to commit suicide when it was made. Almost certainly not true, but still, that's gotta earn it a mention.

nickn, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Gloomy Sunday.
I'm not sure how to approach this idea of depressing - people understand different things by "depressed", or at least I get confused by it as a desciption of an emotional/mental state - but I will tentatively suggest the Trace EP by Demarnia Lloyd ("abandon all pretence of anything/ a;; hesitation is replaces by pointed lines/ and solitude is spreading me wide")

haloist, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I find a distinction between "depressing" and "sad" - a sad song may make you feel weepy, but a depressing song makes you go "Oh Jesus, kill me now."

This Mortal Coil's _It'll End in Tears_ has two of the most depressing songs I've heard, a cover of the forementioned Big Star track, "Holocaust" (covered better by Rainy Day, both covers are still inferior to the original), and a cover of "Fond Affections" by Rema-Rema (I haven't heard the original). The latter has these memorable lyrics:
There's no light at the end of it all
Let's all sit down and cry

Kate Spiren, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its really cool to be thinking "Big Star's "Holocaust"" in your mind, and then scroll down and see that several other people have alreday noted it.

American Music Club also had some quite depressing tunes.

Skip James has some incredibly sad songs. He sings like a ghost. Billie Holiday has one song where she talks about how 'she used to be', and gives you the sense that her fate is palpable at this point. That she has to say goodbye and fulfill the myth that she has created around herself. Damned if I can recall the title at the moment though.

If This Mortal Coil has been invoked, I'll nominate "A Single Wish," which ends the album. Not so much depressing as perfectly, elegantly melancholic -- go Gordon Sharp go.

I think that most anything in the top 40 is pretty depressing right now, but the all time most depressing song of all has got to be "Disco Duck". Who the fuck greenlighted that one?

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" - George Jones

After all, the reason he stopped loving her is because he died. That is goth as fuk for a country song.

earlnash, Monday, 25 November 2002 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Besides Elvis Costello's "almost blue", I'll also nominate "keep coming back" by the afghan whigs (although I think it's actually a cover). that song seems to capture the essence of hopeless, repetitive relationships.

I also second spiritualized and leonard cohen, infra.

Mogwai - CODY

Leee (Leee), Monday, 25 November 2002 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The saddest thing.

I don't normally listen to anything sad or depressing if I can help it. I think one of the most nihilistic tunes I've ever heard is 'Opium' by Cristoph De Babylon. Listening to that really makes me feel like I'm astronaut with a broken radio who's just lost his tether, is irretrievable, and still has eight hours of oxygen left.

The secret track at the end of Rjd2's album is pretty fucking sad. Anybody know the source for that vocal?

I dunno... but possibly Runnin' Out Of Fools by Neko Case. Though it's not so much depressing - the depressing bit usually happens before I listen to it, the song kind of numbs that...

Something must have happened to both of us
Something must have happened
Something always does
Something must have told you burn the bridges then the mast
Something always told you to do it
I lived low enough so the moon wouldn't waste it's light on me
What's left in this life that would do the same for me
Something must have only loved one of us
To say get out, get out, get out
Get out, while there's still something left of us
Get out, get out, get out
Get out, get out, get out

Stop the tape I got spittle all over my moustache. (Talcum Mucker), Sunday, 7 September 2014 09:57 (ten years ago)

Probably the most depressing lyric I've ever heard.
