Fearne Cotton will announce the nominees at the ceremony in Camden The nominations for this year's Brit Awards are to be revealed later at a London ceremony. Kings of Leon, Take That and Duffy are expected to be among the acts nominated for the UK's leading music accolade. Radio 1 presenter Fearne Cotton will announce who is in the running at the Roundhouse in Camden. Kylie Minogue will present the main awards ceremony on 18 February, alongside Gavin and Stacey stars James Corden and Mathew Horne. However, two acts that have received some of the biggest critical acclaim over the past 12 months have been made ineligible for nominations because of a change in award rules. Previously artists were eligible to be nominated if they have had a single or album in the UK top 75, but this year it has been changed to the top 40. This means that Mercury Prize-nominated Laura Marling, who would have been in the running, will fail to get a mention as her album Alas I Cannot Swim only peaked at number 45. Similarly, US singer Bon Iver, who featured in HMV's top 10 end of year poll of polls, reached number 42 with For Emma, Forever Ago and will also miss out.

I heard about the top 40 artists only thing. Was Pete Waterman behind it?
― Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 16:37 (seventeen years ago)
I dunno, but that would make him ineligible, wouldn't it?
Mind you, top 75 would have, also, right?
Actually, B&S had had top 40 hits when they won theirs...

Ian Brown nomination based on an album released in September 2007, earlier than Craig David's last. even if Lemar's recent album had got in the top 40 (it peaked at #41) they probably would've ignored him too.

:: MasterCard British Album
Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His FriendsThe Ting Tings - We Started Nothing
ColdplayRadiohead
Adele - Chasing PavementsColdplay - Viva La Vida
Paul WellerPoor selection this year.
Again, pretty poor list: Adele the classic one song wonder? Duffy is way too boring, but she'll get it prob.
The Ting TingsThe last shads are hardly a 'breakthrough', being an arcs sideproj.
I think we should see this list in full again. And marvel.ColdplayIron MaidenScouting For GirlsThe VerveYeah, Coldplay will get it. Marvel at how SFG can be inthe same categ as IronMaiden! Best "making up the numbers" since "PJ and Duncan" were in the Best New Act list along with Oasis, back in the day.
Wot no Vampire Weekend? um, KOL will win, none of these I would pick though

Jay-Zor Kanye West
Katy Perry, just for wanting it.
Bernard ButlerBrian EnoSteve Macum, they had a good year? Pass.

It's hardly even getting annoyed about now - it's just boring. A tedious promotional exercise to sell backrooms of otherwise unshiftable over-ordered CDs to fifty-year-old white CD buyers. The ceremony will have zero entertainment value (apart from the PSBs closing the show but they should have been given the gong back in about 1993) and no one will watch it on TV.
Florence/White/Boots - dull dull dull crap hyped up by PR employees turned music scribblers bigging up their old mates.
The British music industry - as opposed to British music - isn't worth saving.

Staggered at the inclusion of The Verve under Best Live Act, as they played one of the worst gigs I've ever seen at the back end of 2007; hundreds of people left early, and we had an unprecedented number of angry comments on the newspaper website.
― mike t-diva, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 12:12 (seventeen years ago)
The whole thing is the desperate last ditch act of an industry about to freefall into extinction. An industry which preferred to bully to protect its own interests, rather than embrace the new when they had the opportunity. Which opted for the old, tried and tested, outdated way of doing business and wonders why it's now crashing into the wall.
Running a business on the basis of fear rather than love or enthusiasm is always fatal.
I wouldn't be surprised if this year's Brits turned out to be the last.
― Ben E Gesserit (Marcello Carlin), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 12:17 (seventeen years ago)
nah, the industry loves it's sauce and pop and dressup do's.
Especially with the "punters" being able to get tickets to the event.
Where they get to stand (or sit, whatever) behind the bigwigs....
Am I alone in thinking the "osbournes" presentation show was more of a disaster than the SamFox/MickFleetwood show?

How many Norwegian Grammies have Ulver won?

Some thoughts:
U2 - always start the show with a huge hit not a new song.Duffy - more than enough already. I know the Brits are little more than a glorified prizegiving ceremony now but "soul singer" my arse (actually, judging by her "performance" last night, delete the word "soul" from that)Justified wins for Coldplay and Kanye and a deserved one for Weller; the rest can go hang themselvesGet peer musicians and skilled broadcasters to compere the show not fifth-rate "comedians"Take That doing AA Gill impressions in a balloon - was my mind supposed to be boggled by the "spectacle"?PSBs predictably far and away the best thing about the show.Even though, as always, I wanted to shoot the business execs pretending to like them when in 1986 they would have stuck their noses up and listened to Huey Lewis & the NewsAnd, of course, all the winners were/are major label priorities.
Maybe they should hire the KLF to produce next year's show.

Justified wins for Coldplay
Coldplay didn't win anything I thought. Are you thinking of Iron Maiden?

re: u2, yes, but if the new track is megafant, then go for it.
That song sounded like "Apollo 9" at live aid.

They didn't, did they? (xp) I suppose their "Viva La Vida" towered so naturally over the dross surrounding it that I automatically assumed they'd won something but of course duff Duffy needed a sales boost.

Duffy: I just don't see it at all!
nice enough, and some of the songs seem quite grandiose for a 'soul' type singer.
Still, though: Best album of the year? I can imagine those business execs loving it, so, points for honesty.

Something else I noticed about the programme; too much boring, long shot camerawork.
Are ITV so scuppered by their pension plan commitments that they can only afford YTS trainees to work the cameras and produce shows?

I thought that "audio muted" moment was quite telling...
Seemingly desperate to avoid any kind of interruptions/unscripted moments, even though *that*'s what theye compile into those 'best of the brits' compilations after the event.
What did happen, anyway? Florence looked around distracted for a moment, then carried on with the speech.
(a bit like last years moment when the Arctic Monkeys said something sarcastic (but not sweary afaik about the Brits school people, and they immediately cut to backstage)

In her speech Duffy said something like: "It's not trucking easy. It's hard, it's really, really hard."
I thought she was going to go into a cover of the title track of the 1982 album by the Who but no such luck.

"However much I booze"...

I was watching Florence's lips, and I think she effed. Maybe that's all if was?
Instead of this year's producer: none other than Helen "soul passion & honesty" Terry!

ah right. Must have been two such moments then, going by Marc's comment.

Award for most embarrasingly awful moment goes to Hasselhoff's drunken perving over Fearne Cotton. Joe Calzaghe ran him close though.

This was terrible. I tuned in briefly, I thought it would be fun.

It's amazing how many early-80s holdovers and ex-library-music session pros are high up in the Brits and PRS heirarchies. (x-p)

I agree about the preponderance of very wide, long shots of the cavernous hall they'd rented, with the candle-lit tables down below. No doubt the producer saw this shot in rehearsals, was transfixed, and demanded that it be cut to nonstop. "Oh it's just beautiful!" No it's not. On iTV's standard-def Freeview it was like taking a break every three or four minutes to study a piece of blurry black calico.
