Hmm, Hot Chip doing Joy Division might be damn good!

The Tingtings doing Sheena, surely that's tingproof, and Alice might well dig it.

OK, here goes....

OMG!! THE KOOKS ARE GOING TO SLAUGHTER VICTORIA BY THE KINKS!!!

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

lily allen doing straight to hell because it was sampled by M.I.A. presumably. Guh.

‘War Child: Heroes’ is an unprecedented collaboration between music’s most heralded legends and the finest current artists.

We asked 15 ultimate icons to select a favourite song from their classic back catalogue and to nominate the new act they most trust to create a unique interpretation of that hand-picked track.

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

..OK, who smells bullshit here?

OK, apologies here, misread the Yeahs*3 as being the Tings. How did that happen?

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

oh, and I've nackred the Pink one.

Hmm, should I restart this?

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

I can dig Rufus, but "Wonderful" seems an awfully frail song for his OTT delivery.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

I expect good things from the Scissors Scisters, re: Do the Strand.

Mick Jones from The Clash is her godfather.

Glansel & Gretel (Raw Patrick), Friday, 23 January 2009 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

The US version of this features a bonus track of L Cohen being covered by trusted new artist L Cohen's son.

Glansel & Gretel (Raw Patrick), Friday, 23 January 2009 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

How much money does a compilation like this raise?

Glansel & Gretel (Raw Patrick), Friday, 23 January 2009 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

most of the original songs on this are kinda dire. i'm no lily allen defender but if anything she might make the clash a bit better

lex pretend, Friday, 23 January 2009 13:39 (seventeen years ago)

Elbow (U2: Running To Stand Still)

this is the only one that fills me with dread; I don't know what is Elbow is but the original song is so close to ridiculous already that I can't see how a cover could avoid it.

Do you know what is arse?

Glansel & Gretel (Raw Patrick), Friday, 23 January 2009 13:44 (seventeen years ago)

It's a toss-up between hot chip and estelle. Superstition is pretty untouchable.

J@cob, Friday, 23 January 2009 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

I read in Mojo that the Ting Tings were offered "Once in a lifetime" by David Byrne, but turned it down as they reckoned they'd just ruin it.

Mark G, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

You can hear the Hot Chip version of Transmission here. The Lily Allen cover is on the War Child website fwiw

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 January 2009 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

I've listened to Lily's version of "Straight to Hell," and it sounds an awful lot like Mick Jones is doing bg vocals on there.

Duffy doing "Live and Let Die" is the one that scares the hell outta me.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 January 2009 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

Duffy doing "Live And Let Die" and Kooks doing "Victoria" pretty much tied for me as far as potential awfullness goes. Voted Kooks cuz they're slaughtering a better original.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 26 January 2009 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

You have the Kinks. You have the Fall.

Why, lord?

Mark G, Monday, 26 January 2009 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

I like the steel drums (at least in theory), but Hot Chip's Transmission is dire.

.. and The Kooks one is the correct winner here.

Mark G, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

Upon actually listening to it:

The worst is probably Duffy doing "Straight To Hell"

The best track, oddly enough, is Peaches doing Iggy, easily.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 20 February 2009 05:21 (seventeen years ago)

(yr worst track does not exist...)

Mark G, Friday, 20 February 2009 07:56 (seventeen years ago)

Lily & Mick doing "Straight To Hell" is one of the better ones IMHO. Duufy's "Live & Let Die" is all build and no release - doesn't work at all - if I want to hear it covered I'll stick the Foo Fighters.

mike t-diva, Friday, 20 February 2009 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

I agree with Mike TD, I find myself softening to Lily Allen. The Like is surprisingly good, Estelle OK and the Scissors Sisters fine. TV on the Radio is the most disappointing. I find it hard to get worked up about Duffy but was pleased by Peaches and satisfied if not overwhelmed by the Hold Steady.
