the spirit theyve gone/danse manatee double pack blew my mind though id choose spirit as the best. I can only dream what would have happened if theyd had the silly money to spend on that record that they have on the last couple

straightola, Friday, 23 January 2009 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

it's sung tongs, hands down.

the next grozart, Friday, 23 January 2009 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

sometimes i wish they'd be a bit less prolific to be honest. it took me months to truly understan dthe power of sung tongs and campfire songs, and i still feel as though i'm yet to digest strawberry jam and already they've got merriweather out.

the next grozart, Friday, 23 January 2009 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

here's a tip dude: you don't have to "keep up" with the band, you can just move on to the next album when you're ready

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 23 January 2009 12:34 (seventeen years ago)

Eh, they're only putting out one album a year. It's not like they're Acid Mothers Temple or something.

Yehudi Menudo (NickB), Friday, 23 January 2009 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

sticking with sung tongs, here.

Millsner, Friday, 23 January 2009 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

campfire songs

the only one i can stand, really

lemon dropsy (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 23 January 2009 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

n/a, i know but i like them a lot so i like to know what's out there.

the next grozart, Friday, 23 January 2009 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

feels>sung tongs+mpp>spirit+strawberry>the rest

Zeno, Friday, 23 January 2009 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

I think on different days I could choose any of the last four records. I'm leaning towards Feels right now but I'll probably think differently tomorrow.

Tim F, Friday, 23 January 2009 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

Feels

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 23 January 2009 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

gott punch OTM. campfire songs is a good record and it's a shame they decided to move away from that sound. everything else is kinda shit imho.

ian, Friday, 23 January 2009 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

Campfire Songs is the only one I haven't heard, guess I'll have to check that out. Need to listen to Her Comes The Indian again too, cos I really couldn't get my ears around that at all in 2003.

Yehudi Menudo (NickB), Friday, 23 January 2009 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

feels by quite a bit

BIGrack HOOSein Obama (k3vin k.), Friday, 23 January 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

Campfire songs or Sung Tongs probably, although I am enjoying Merriweather a lot too and it's the first release of theirs that I can fully rep for since Sung Tongs.

Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Friday, 23 January 2009 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

here comes the indian. it kind of makes me want to break into a cemetery in the middle of the night and just knock over some headstones.

chris doesn't post, Friday, 23 January 2009 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

you and every misfits fan in the USA.

ian, Friday, 23 January 2009 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

havent heard MPP yet, but yeah i mean my first concert was tom petty and the heartbreakers at MERRIWEATHER POST PAVILION in 1995 so yknow it will be special im sure.

umm so also two things:
- sung tongs uber alles. i like campfire songs, and a few songs on feels, but sung tongs is the perfect distillation of their bucolic, burbly electroacoustic psych sound IMHO
- where is WASTERED??? that is a tight release.

69, Friday, 23 January 2009 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

sung tongs is the only one i ever really got into

s1ocki, Friday, 23 January 2009 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

sung tongs is where it started going sour. Who could kill a rabbit is their first genuinely annoying song and the noisy bits are non existent, a vague burble over that pointless long guitar track (and im a big fan of longform guitar drone). I was gutted when I heard it but it did grow on me.

straightola, Friday, 23 January 2009 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

sung tongs was when they went full blood indie

straightola, Friday, 23 January 2009 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

Can't stand anything by these guys anymore

Trip Maker, Friday, 23 January 2009 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

Hollinndagain

a good ole fashion ass whoopin, wow (Curt1s Stephens), Friday, 23 January 2009 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

i'm def not a fan of MPP where their Negativland-esque experiments with the "found art"/cultural appropriation of Rick Astley I personally found to be sophmoric and short-lived.

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Friday, 23 January 2009 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

Voted Strawberry Jam but really not sure between SJ, Sung Tongs and the new one.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 23 January 2009 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

I think the Avey and Panda solo records could've been included here, too.

Would make the revote a bit more interesting.

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, young prayer would sweep the board!

Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Saturday, 24 January 2009 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

Voted Strawberry Jam

young prayer

ew these albums are so bad, please no one vote for them! i voted for merriweather post pavilion because it's new and i'm in love with it but otherwise feels would have won. i think the solo albums should have been included. it would be a very close call between feels, person pitch, sung tongs and merriweather post pavilion.

samosa gibreel, Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

Most of them are pretty great, sometimes in quite different and incommensurable ways. I pass.

Mister Craig, Saturday, 24 January 2009 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

This is a tough one. I have a lot of love for Feel555555555555555533333322222222222
==========

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 24 January 2009 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

Ahem, my cat seems to disagree...

I love Feels, but voted for Sung Tongs, the ultimate AC record. I like MPP, but really, it's way too early to include that one in a poll like this.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 24 January 2009 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

can't say i'm a fan of this band
something about them irks me maybe their silliness or trying to be too serious about their albums or something or their indie cred or who they're associated with
i prefer his solo project "panda bear" much more
or gimme some dinosaur

highschoolworld, Saturday, 24 January 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

So the whole idea of this poll is to see whether MPP wins, right?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 24 January 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

Voted MPP because i simply can't stop listening to it. Feels is still close though.

myndbloom, Sunday, 25 January 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

SJ. some all-time songs, none i'd skip. they're all fantastic, though, except for possibly Danse Manatee

HPSCHD, Sunday, 25 January 2009 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

"Sung Tongs, the ultimate AC record."

how can any record by them be ultimate when almost all of them sound different?

"So the whole idea of this poll is to see whether MPP wins, right?"

no. they have many new compared to 2 years ago, also the perspective of their catalouge might change for people who dig their older stuff only recently

Zeno, Sunday, 25 January 2009 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

"new fans compared...

Zeno, Sunday, 25 January 2009 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

danse manatee is fantastic though probably a bit noisy and tribal for post feels pfork bedwetters

straightola, Monday, 26 January 2009 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

Feels: "Grass", "Banshee Beat" & "Purple Bottle" are the band at their apex, imo. I'm very bad at remembering song titles but among the rest on that album there's not much filler. Sung Tongs not far behind. Prospect Hummer is somewhere up there too. Didn't like (didn't spend much time with it either so maybe haven't given it enough of a chance) Strawberry Jamm. Can't get into MPP.

willem, Monday, 26 January 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

yes but what about their pre-indie pop sellout work?

ian, Monday, 26 January 2009 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

here comes the indian holds up surprisingly well. campfire songs and spirit they're gone... don't sound bad, either

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:27 (seventeen years ago)

They've made a lot of good records, and Feels may be my second favorite, and I don't hate the new album anywhere near as much as ILM seems to, but Sung Tongs is just a goddamn masterpiece.

mose def (kenan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

(I just put it on again to double check that I didn't misspeak. Nope, there it is. Perfect.)

mose def (kenan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

I don't hate the new album anywhere near as much as ILM seems to

when it wins musically's 2009 poll and places inside the decade top 50, i'll remind you of this

pforkboy (country matters), Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:38 (seventeen years ago)

must be a short album kenan!

jordy (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

I only need the first few notes, and it all comes back to me.

mose def (kenan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

After Sung Tongs, Feels was the next record in the playlist, and at least the first half of it is just as good. "Bees" annoys me for some reason, though.

mose def (kenan), Thursday, 29 January 2009 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

I still don't really get Sung Tongs. I played it another three or so times this week, it's pleasant enough, a bit out there, but I don't get the extreme love for it. I'll take Feels, SJ or MPP over it any day.

ilxor, Thursday, 29 January 2009 04:35 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 30 January 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

i'll listen to feels again. i gave it a good chance i think but it felt perfunctory and therefore super tedious after sung tongs.

there was zarana (tremendoid), Friday, 30 January 2009 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

Thank god we sorted this out

Mare Street tour guide (Dom Passantino), Friday, 30 January 2009 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

everyone loves them some rick astley
